When you're using the spring compressors, always try to get as many of the coils in as possible to avoid the issue Ray faced. The more coils being clamped means you compress it further and can place the nut on the shaft without further risk.

@@MrRunner I 100% agree about the spring compressor. The other thing is when putting them on they must have the same # of coils between them. The way Ray installed them the spring couldn't compress because one of the compressors was pinched in between 2 coils, as seen that will not allow the spring to fully compress.

For us in Hungary, the tires need to match on an axle. You can have different makes and/or models on different axles, and winter tires can be mandated, if needed, along with snow chains.
@MonkeyJedi99
@MonkeyJedi99 Месяц назад
I don't know if there is a law about it here in Massachusetts, but I always try to keep the tires matching on the "axle" even if they don't match front to back. I even go so far as to try and keep the matching to age, or at least tread depth. Since I've started doing that, my rain and snow experience has had less difficulty and no spin-outs.

Same in France, and after checking for the UK, it's the same as well. It does make sense to allow different tyres on different axles, because even though it's not a common occurence, some cars do have different tyres width front and rear. Plus no matter how you do a tyre rotation, wheels on the same axle will stay together after the rotation.

Ray, we had cup style compressors in the shop(I think they were OTC, but don't quote me on that), they were designed to fit in close areas like this, but we were a suspension shop. I am trying to figure out why there was a height difference when the aftermarket had a 3/4" spring seat in it, shouldn't have been more than a quarter inch difference. It is also why you are not supposed to change only one strut and always do them in pairs, so that was a fail on the body shop, and yes I have seen them do it, but just as you did they needed to use a factory strut not mix factory with aftermarket. Nice use of the lift for the safety cage, and having a wife that understands a mechanics brain. 😂😂

@44hawk28
@44hawk28 Месяц назад
That problem would not have existed had they replaced the front struts as a pair. Always replace active suspension components, such things as a strut or a shock absorber. Or what I call Active suspension components. A steering knuckle does not change its inherent shape as it is being articulated. Had the previous work replace both of the struts with the replacements. It would not have been an issue in steering. And might have even allowed that car to drive a little bit nicer being squatted just a little bit in the front

I have a vehicle that uses a full size spare, and I always, always do five tire rotations and keep five of the exact same tires on the wheels. It makes purchasing tires 20% less frequent, but 20% more expensive at the time. Worth it to me because it’s the same cost in the long run, and I know with confidence that my spare is always in good condition. The 5th wheel was extra cost that you can’t get back in the long run, but after a couple years you’ve forgotten the cost, but still have the advantages! Buy once, cry once!

Hey Ray, just my opinion but I was taught that when using spring compressors it's best to tighten/ loosen them evenly so that the spring doesn't have maximum energy on just one clamp. I was also taught its better where possible to have the same number of coils in each clamp that way when compressing they clamp down evenly. I know its more work but I would have removed the uca there to give a better shot at the spring. These are not criticisms of your work, you did a great job on this caddy just some tips that maybe help keep others safe 😁

As long as the ply rating. speed rating and load rating and size match ( on some make/models of car they come from the factory with 2 different sizes on the front and rear axles) ( re the MG F and TF which has/had wider profiles on the rear) , you can legally mix makes/brands of tyres here in the UK, what you can't do is put cross ply and radial tyres on the same axles, they have to be split front and rear, with the radials at the rear.

Great example of after market parts! A very good friend of mine, who owns a wrecking yard, and just yesterday we’re talking about after market parts vs. oem! I’m working on a 12 Cruze with lean code, and service power steering notification on dash! Every part from Chevy parts online are cheaper then Carquest, NAPA, and ORiellys! He said and OEM are far better then after market! Same thing with tires! Wal mart tires are seconds! Another good friend who owns a large tire shop. Asked him why those brand name tires, at Wally World, have leaks, blemishes, don’t last long! He said he asked the Goodyear factory rep that! The factory rep, said Wally World, walls in with a fifty million dollar check and say they want x amount of tires, but only tires that just barely meet federal regs! That answered that question! Take fuel injectors for the Cruze! OEM 45-48 bucks! OReillys, 75, Carquest,55! For my 16, F150, brake pads are the same price from Ford, as Carquest! At 89,000 miles, and pulling an RV from southeast Colorado to Texas, another trip to eastern Oklahoma, and over a bunch of the colo Rockies, I’ve still got 50 percent front pads, excellent stopping power, and smooth!

For GM parts it's almost always less to get OEM parts online. For Toyota, it's hard to find OEM parts for less than aftermarket, but some can be found. When it's an expensive part, I try to at least go with OE manufacturer. OEM always fits. Aftermarket can give you more headaches than it's worth.

Hi Ray, about spring compressor, try installing it before removing the strut assy. With four wheels on the ground, floor jack the lower arm up to compress the spring more and remove the tire. Then install the spring compressor and tighten it to compress the spring a little more. lift the car up until jack is loose and move it away. Now begin disassembly. Notice the spring is loose on the strut. The strut assy is now easy to disassemble. The compressor will only be removed after strut assy is reinstalled in the vehicle. In other words, install and remove the spring compressor only when the spring is in a compressed stage.

I used to remove the struts and take them into the suspension place next door (Back in the 1990's) to have them replace the struts (We could do it, but they did it for free if they supplied the new strut). I was horrified the first time I went in, the mechanic laid the strut down on the floor, put his foot on top of the top spring saddle and just rattled the top nut off with an impact gun. The strut went sailing across the floor to the other side of the workshop. I thought he'd fkd up but then he did the same with the other side one! I later discovered he did them all that way, only used compressors to reinstall. I highly doubt he would be able to do that today, with all the OHS laws lol

Mercedes has a procedure to discard struts in a safe isch way. by drilling 2 small holes and remove the reminance of oil before scraping it. if i remember right first small hole 1 inch from top. (wear gloves, safety shield) 3mm. then drill a hole 1 inch from bottom and then move piston to remove oil via the holes. Do it at own risk as oil and gas might spray out.

Ditto to the previous message, however the radial tyres have to be on the front. The ratings have to = or greater than spec and the only tyre that can be a different size across axles is the spare.
@davidclemens1578
@davidclemens1578 Месяц назад
The radials being on the front is not always the wise move. Back in the late 60s when when we were transitioning from conventional bias ply tires to radials my father had an incident that completely convinced him that radial tires are far superior to conventional. He had a 1966 Ford wagon which needed new front tires and decided to put the new radials on and the back had brand new bias snow tires. He was driving in slippery snowy weather and started fishtailing all over the highway. He said every time he corrected the back end would come around and fishtail the other way. I've had the same thing happened to me in his old truck but it had worn snow tires on the back and conventional truck tires on the front. But to the point, both situations were that the front had much better grip than the back. I have read where the front tires should have the better tires. It obviously depends on road conditions. So if you put new tires on, either try to replace all four tires, whether used or new with the same tire and tread depth.

In Germany it is practice to change both at the same time, the same goes for brakes, etc. Regarding tyres, here you can have one make up front and another on the rear, but they must be both the same size, you can have wider wheels on the rear, but they must be put into the car papers and tested by the authorities.

In the uk it's illegal (Ie police can still issue fines and points to a uk licence) if radial and crossply tires are fitted to the same axel (as well as a MOT [Ministry of Transport inspection] failure), as this a safety issue. However tire sizing has relaxed in the last couple of decades (mainly due to factory supplied 'space saver' spare tire, and thus temporary usage of space saver spare tire, which are rarely the same wheel size, tire width and tire rolling diameter) tires on the same axel have to be the same size, (thus the wheels on an axel needs to be the same size as well), except for when using "temporarly" a spare tire. The manufacturer of the tires (any tire fitted) does not need to be the same, however manufacture (construction) of the tire needs to be the same (see comment on radial/crossply above)
