I’ve been in clinical remission from a severe case of Ulcerative Colitis for several years after improving the composition of my gut microbiome with nutrition and exercise. Here are my colonoscopy results after one year of NOT following my gut microbiome optimizing protocol.

Thanks Kenny. Appreciate your honesty. Almost 2 years ago when I was very ill in a flare I had lost 42lbs and they almost cut my Colon out. Your videos were some of the first ones I watched that gave me hope. Between med's and a diet rich in whole, nutrient dense foods, I've been in remission for almost a year. What works for me is....... Diet (no processed but lots of fermented foods), no added sugar, no caffeine, Non-GMO, organic meats, dairy & no spray veg, exercise, sleep, daily vitamin supplements and stress reduction. Making all my own food. Never spent so much time in the kitchen. I have about a 90-10 rule and I don't mid. I swear my tastes have changed. I salivate at the thought of eating Kimchi now. One to 2 very healthy BM's a day. I swear my colon has never worked this good in all my life! I hope one day my GI Doc will recommend taking me off of Biologics.

Funny enough I healed about 3 years ago after following your guidelines aswell as Jordan Rubin and some other people. I healed so well that I even stopped following a diet period for 10 months and ate anything I wanted with no meds and was basically fine but I did have some inflammation starting up similar to you which was almost like a kick in the butt to Atleast get back to the 80/20 rule from before. I now do 5 days clean and 2 days whatever I want again and it’s great ! I was also developing type 2 diabetes when I started to eat freely again so can’t really do it anyways now ! Just nice to know when you heal yourself you can go out and have freedom on weekends or vacation and no symptoms ! Love that feeling . Cheers kenny

What many people don't know is that exercise actually improves sympathetic (fight/flight) tone in the body, which believe it or not suppresses global inflammation. I think exercise is a hidden gem of a tool to use when it comes to striving for remission. Which variable do you think got you the best results Kenny? Great video as always mate!
@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 года назад
Oooh, good question. I was doing so many different things at the same time it's difficult to isolate what I think gave me the best results. I noticed a huge difference when I began adding kefir to my smoothies and implemented intermittent fasting. I exercised throughout the entire time I was working to improve my health which I think really gave me an edge for a number of reasons including the ones you mentioned. I definitely noticed feeling worse when I wasn't consistently exercising!

Exercise sounds like a good idea, but what if you're too weak from UC? I've lost half my body weight already, but still feeling better than I've done in years. I'm also taking probiotic supplements from Garden of Life, which seem to be helping a whole lot. I also avoid all nightshade vegetables and all spices which are derived from seeds e.g. black pepper, nutmeg etc. Cooking without them is quite challenging, but boy am I feeling better! I think my gut is slowly healing.Thank God! I can't wait to get to where Kenny is and be able to eat whatever I like🤗

Mr. Honnas, I've been following your protocol for 7 months (trial and error and adjusting a few areas to MATCH me specifically) and it's been a night and day difference. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis (Pancolitis) back in 2016. I did not believe in taking the drugs that the GI doctors were recommending as I feared the side effects of the meds. Instead was seeking a more holistic natural way. Immediately after diagnosis I blindedly followed a vegan diet but no improvement and gave up and was ready to get a colectomy. Fast forward I got my bachelor's degree but my health was priotized last. Meaning I was drinking alcohol, consuming crazy amounts of caffeine, and fast food. I noticed that I had to eliminate ALOT of foods. On top of your protocol, I adopted a low FODMAP/Gluten free diet and oh man I forgot what bloody and mucus stools were! I also forgot what being bloated and gassy felt like! I will be doing my second colonoscopy this Fall to see changes in my colon. Hopefully all good because I feel better than ever and I have been on a streak of solid bowel movements for quite some time! People need to understand what their situation is. People need to accept that this healing journey will involve trial and error. People need to be consistent and positive. I'm grateful for you man and you have no idea how much of a positive impact you have been. I'm forever in your debt. Thank you so much and I hope people use your videos to aid in their knowledge and help them achieve improvement in their condition and hopefully even complete remission. I wish my GI doctor placed me on your protocol since day 1 of official diagnosis... Imagine how nice that'd be...

I am doing much better having followed a carnivore diet for a few months. I have had my microbiome tested before and after and the carnivore diet, it had eliminated 4 strains of pathogenic bacteria (I had 2 strains of e Coli, one of which was 1% of my total microbiome!). Worth noting that my levels of good bacteria didn't change during this experiment! Great N=1 longitudinal study. How generalizable do you think this is?
@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 года назад
That's the idea! As for generalizability, I'm still thinking about that. I think the core principles are pretty solid for just about everyone. But, I recently had my gut microbiome tested and something that these gut microbiome testing companies do is recommend specific foods that will be beneficial to your specific gut microbiome. So the exact foods that were helpful for me might not be as helpful for someone else. Of course we all kind of knew that which is why we hear and throw out "everyone is different" so often when discussing this topic haha. But what's cool about the testing, is that now each person can follow the general principles and use the specific foods that will be the most beneficial for their gut microbiomes according to their test results. I think that is the future. Optimize the gut microbiome with clean water, prebiotics, probiotics, and exercise. But instead of just following the same cookie cutter blueprint diet and foods that someone like myself ate, people can test for the foods that will be best for their microbiomes and use those.

After a while I started having matcha lattes with an almond/coconut milk, but recently it has started irritating my stomach. Sometimes I allow myself to have a single espresso, but never on an empty stomach. I drink the grounded linen seeds with hot water first thing in the morning as it coats my bowels and then I eat eggs and after that I have an espresso. I believe that the trick is to never eat or drink the irritating foods and liquids on an empty stomach. Somebody also recommended a chicory coffee (such as Nescafe), but it does nothing to me.

Hi Kenny. If anything, I think this throws substantial support to your (and similar) protocols. I watch a few channels based around healing UC and what they all have in common is some form of dietary and fitness modification. I do not believe this to be coincidental. I have UC myself and argued this for years with Gastro clinicians. Funnily enough, I’m now a PhD student and recently released a paper on drug-induced gastro issues (published in Frontiers in Pharmacology). Anyway, have you done any research on pharmacomicrobiomics? I think this could be crucial in IBD patients not only in disease course/clinical outcomes but also possible involvement in aetiology. While there are genetic based risk factors that may make certain individuals more likely to develop IBD, I do believe that protocols such as yours can mitigate adverse outcomes. A typical western diet is very damaging to our body. Also; having started healing protocols myself but failed to follow the long enough to gain desired outcomes, the self discipline you have shown to get where you are today is extremely admirable. I am slowly transitioning in to a healing lifestyle based on your protocol along with others and do believe it will work. Best wishes!

Thank you very much 👊🏻 I think it shows support for dietary and fitness modifications as well and hoped it would be encouraging for others to see what is possible. Also, I haven't even heard of pharmacomicrobiomics before, but the name alone has peaked my interest quite a bit. Thanks for dropping that info, that does sound very interesting and is something I am looking forward to learning more about. Glad you're doing what you're doing. Biome Optima™ explains my understanding of the inflammatory cascade that leads to IBD based on current available research. It also explains the nutritional tactics that I formulated based on this understanding and independent study to achieve and maintain complete remission. This course condenses all of the information from my RU-vid channel, plus new information, into one succinct and sequential step-by-step educational process. The course is broken down into 5 modules covering mentality, what I believe causes IBD, 7 key gut microbiome optimizing strategies, approved foods and drinks, and ends with a downloadable 5 week sample daily routine and meal plan. I am not a doctor or a dietician, and the information in this course is intended only for educational purposes and should NOT be acted upon without the approval and supervision of a licensed physician. Seriously, acting upon this information could result in catastrophic or fatal consequences without the supervision of a doctor who knows you, who understands your current level of health, and is aware of the many other health and medical factors that are unique to you. Just to be clear, Biome Optima™ is not a necessity in my opinion. It's concise and easy to follow with a lot of convenient things such as the sample menu and sample pre-planned meals, but the crux of nearly all of this information can be found in my boot camp series or in other videos on the channel. I do charge for Biome Optima, so if you'd rather not pay for the course then I would check out this blog post: www.teamhonnas.com/post/you-don-t-need-a-coach-how-to-improve-your-gut-health-on-your-own-for-free. Its now 2 months that i am taking Mesalazine (1200mg) and i am in remission now. My question to you is, when did you stop your medication and when do you think i should stop my medication of Mesalazine (1200mg) and should i first taper the dose and stop or i can stop abruptly?

I recommend you consult with your doctor about all medications. I would also ask your doctor if they're okay with you modifying your diet to one that is similar to the one I followed while taking the medications they want you on simultaneously. If your doctor approves, which I think is very likely, then you can combine medication with a eubiotic diet to improve the composition of your gut microbiome. Then you can continue working with your doctor and discuss discontinuing your medication when/if your doctor thinks it's appropriate. Hope that helps!

Let me tell you it is not much more difficult to stay in clinical remission with a CD diagnosis even after having healed his gut like yours, it is also well known in litterature, the immune system seems to be more aggressive and the microbiome harder to keep healthy and in balance they also mention this difference in the famous semi vegetarian study from Japan. Most CD diagnosis people people have also an acute aggressive immune response to baker yeast(same as nutritional yeast) which make eating bread, pizza and similar a very damaging thing.

Yes, but what medications were you taking. Did you first take the prescriptions then ease off them, or did you go cold turkey? My son has had a similar issues but he's not sure we're you were on the prescription set and how you got to where you are. My son would like to know if you started with prescriptions first to get the inflammation down then eased off them integrating a more disciplined nutrition schedule and workouts. My son has been watching your videos and has been very diligent with nutrition and workouts. In two months he has lost 45 pounds and has had a blood transfusion.
@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 года назад
Here is a comprehensive summary of the timeline/path that eventually got me into clinical remission: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rvGH2hdhPA0.html. It should include the medications I was on and how I discontinued them. Now just to be clear, I recommend that you and your son work with your son's doctor and use the principles in the boot camp series as an addition to the treatment he receives from his doctor, as long as they approve of him doing so. Doctors saved my life when I was in the hospital, and then medicine kept the symptoms and pain as low as possible while I experimented with nutrition. Doctors and modern medicine can be life saving measures that buy an individual time to see if changing their diet will help improve their health. Losing 45 pounds is a huge amount in two months. I would talk to his doctor ASAP and see about the medications that will reduce the inflammation/symptoms so that he can simultaneously work on following a eubiotic diet if his doctor is okay with him doing so. I don't see why they wouldn't be, but it's always good to double check in case they catch something that we don't know about or don't think of. From my understanding and what I've read on pubmed, there are many different clinical trials where IBD patients saw significant improvement with probiotic therapy while also taking their standard medications as well. Hope that helps. If you want to discuss anything further, send me an email to teamhonnas@gmail.com.

Been doing the raw kefire, bananas, blueberries, avacado shake every morning then within 8 hours eating grass fed beef with a white potato and raw milk. At first it got worse, then about a month and a half later, I am down to one bm a day and no other symptoms except some gas. But no urgency, no mucus, no blood. So there must be something to it. I was having to go 6-10 times a day with blood and mucus and urgency. I also had great success with the carnivore diet a while back but messed that up by eating whatever I wanted for about a month when I was almost healed. So I think either works. Carnivore took about two weeks to get down to half symptoms and four months or so before I was basically healed and probably would have been if I had stuck with it and not started eating junk again.

Now just to be clear, I recommend that you work with your doctor and use the principles in the boot camp series as an addition to the treatment you receive from your doctor, as long as they approve of you doing so. Doctors saved my life when I was in the hospital, and then medicine kept the symptoms and pain as low as possible while I experimented with nutrition. Doctors and modern medicine can be life saving measures that buy an individual time to see if changing their diet will help improve their health.

Do you think if you didn’t have a healthy diet the last year, like eating spicy buffalo wings every other day and deep fried foods, you would have entered a flare? Or is your gut micro biome that strong now?

I used to get hemorrhoids ever so often, but no fistulas. They eventually went away and as my health began to improve they didn't come back. I also try really hard to avoid straining during bowel movements. Hope that helps!

How many months, after initial 2014 diagnosis, did you start feeling better (no more mucus and blood)? I am 6-7 month into my UC, eating healthy and adding probiotic foods

Oh and one more question: what laxative did they give you to prep your colon for the colonoscopy? Drinking 3 liters of nasty tasting laxative is completely freaking me out!! 🤢

Are you saying you *didn't* follow your gut microbiome optimizing principles for 1 year? I'm really curious to know why you would try that.

Because after you heal your gut if you dont do something damaging you, you get back to normal diet.

@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 года назад
Correct, I did not follow my gut microbiome optimizing principles for a year. It wasn't done purposely. Just had a natural decline in discipline while the majority of my focus went into dealing with other life stressors that required my attention. Since I felt good throughout this time I didn't see any reason that I needed to be as extremely disciplined as I had in the past, and I kind of swung like a pendulum towards the opposite extreme of being very un-disciplined since I was feeling so good. Again, my diet was still generally healthy, it just didn't follow my GM optimizing principles. So I'm glad to know that even if I feel great clinically, with no symptoms, I still need to make it a priority to follow the GM optimizing principles to maintain endoscopic and histologic remission. Hope that helps!

Coconut milk

The sinusitis from kefir is probably due to a herxeimer effect or dying out effect of the pathogens and is actually a good sign. So instead of stopping, reduce the amount of kefir he takes. Start with a small amount maybe a tablespoon a day and then as his body adjusts and clears out the pathogens and no sinus or other detox symptoms, slowly increase the quantity until he reaches half to one cup a day and then maintain around that level.
@team_honnas
@team_honnas 3 года назад
Yes, it may be due to the Herxheimer reaction. If it turns out he has a sensitivity to dairy, I like coconut milk yogurt/kefir as a good alternative.
