Full UC Remission Timeline Explained | Why I Quit the Vegan Diet

This video finally explains my entire healing timeline in the correct chronological order starting from my UC diagnosis. I also clearly explain my time as High Carb Health's (HCH) client following the vegan diet, and why I chose to abandon the vegan diet in favor of an all-inclusive gut microbiome optimizing approach. Contrary to what I have said in the past, the vegan diet did NOT heal me. I was wrong. As I explain in the video, I truly thought I was healed at the time of my interview with HCH. However, not long after our interview, I began eating out at different restaurants because I thought I was healed. I began noticing symptoms of UC soon after.
After that, I decided to educate myself on the gut microbiome. I became convinced that optimizing the gut microbiome was the key to healing UC/IBD. From what I read, there seemed to be multiple ways in which the gut microbiome could be optimized, and that a vegan diet could be one such way. I was faced with two choices: make some modifications and continue on with the vegan diet... or choose a route that allowed me to eat both plants and animal products. I chose the latter because it gave me the most freedom, and I came to the conclusion that this route would also be faster. I was able to heal a few months later and I haven't looked back since. I also had a colonoscopy and a biopsy performed in 2018 that confirmed I'm in clinical and endoscopic remission. I can now eat anything I want to, including junk food, with no symptoms. This is the definition of healing that I was looking for, and it was the one that I got: "to be able to consume a full range of foods without bleeding, mucus, urgency, or diarrhea; to have well-formed solid bowel movements; and to be on no medication."
I would like to be clear: there is abundant research that supports the idea of being able to optimize the gut microbiome on a vegan diet. I think that if I had been willing to stick with the vegan diet, and maybe make some small modifications, I would have eventually been able to fully heal. I was very close to doing it twice, as I explain in the video. Many people have been able to heal from IBD while following a whole foods plant based vegan diet. Most notably, Shamiz from High Carb Health and Dr. David Klein, author of Self Healing Colitis & Crohn's.
Shamiz and Shukul from High Carb Health were fantastic to work with. They've helped several people heal from IBD and they tremendously helped me. Even though I decided not to follow through with their program in the end, I'm still a fan of their work and aspects of the vegan diet (though I am no longer vegan). Due to a number of variables, the vegan diet might not be for everyone. But if you are interested in a whole food plant based diet approach to fighting IBD, the Kachwalla brothers from High Carb Health are the experts in that arena.

Hi Kenny, thank you for making this video, we really appreciate your honesty and genuineness with your videos. We also appreciated this when we were working with you. Yes, you are right, you can definitely heal on a plant-based diet. Shamiz has done it, and so have thousands of other people. There were definitely some hiccups on your journey, and the medication you were taking was probably not a good idea, as well as your issues with water quality. We also would have not suggested eating out so soon after you felt better, as you have may not have known what is in the food such as oils and other flavourings which could have created increased symptoms. The reintroduction of foods into the diet is something we have worked very diligently with specific people according to their severity of disease in the last couple of years and we now have a really robust post-healing protocol. Once this is followed people are able to choose to eat a wide variety of plant foods, including at restaurants. You know we do not recommend animal foods, but since you do not want to be plant-based you had to try a different approach. We are really happy for you that you seem to have found health mate! Obviously, we are worried about the long term impact of animal products for your health, especially heart disease, diabetes and cancer risk. But we wish you all the best for the future and hope you have the quality of life that you are looking for, long term. Also, we were not aware that you felt this way about your testimonial on our channel, if you had told us how you felt earlier, we would have taken it down straight away. I will be taking it off our RU-vid channel and website shortly. Wishing you all the best man, stay in touch and take care of yourself.

Shamiz & Shukul, I really am more than grateful for what you both were able to do for me. You two were the first people I ever talked to that had first hand experience of healing UC. So just the simple fact of showing me that UC could be healed was so incredibly impactful, and it set me on a road that changed my life. I’ll be the first to admit that there were plenty of times that I deviated outside of your instructions with things like the medication I was taking for my hormones, and you did warn me not to eat out or experiment quite as quickly as I did. I also just simply jumped the gun and prematurely claimed victory, which is entirely my fault. I also should have been more forthcoming about what my expectations were for healing. I never really verbalized this, but in my head I had committed myself to following a whole foods plant based diet for at least one year in an attempt to heal, and then I was hoping to be able to eat a full range of foods after that. While I was more than happy to follow a diet that Vegans adhere to in an attempt to reclaim my physical health, I never truly accepted the Vegan ideology. Although, I very much respect it, and see how much you both believe in it. And of course, there is ample evidence that suggests that a whole food plant based diet, or vegan diet, can be an incredible way to optimize the gut microbiome. Shamiz is walking proof that it can be done, and that restoring the gut microbiome can reverse IBD. I was very close to doing it on a WFPB diet twice, so I’m fairly confident that I would have been able to finish the job eventually, like Shamiz did, if I had not been impatient and excited about the different routes I could take. I wanted something different than what a vegan lifestyle offered me, but that in no way means that a vegan diet, or lifestyle, isn’t a great way to combat IBD. Once again, thank you both so much for inspiring me, and showing me that healing from IBD is possible. That, more than anything nutrition related, has changed my life. Thank you both for always being so professional and attentive while I was your client. You both really changed my perspective at a bleak time in my life. After a not-so-fun video explaining why I chose to leave a WFPB/vegan diet, I am pretty excited about making a video that explores all of the positive aspects that a WFPB diet offers for individuals fighting IBD. You guys are awesome. I hope to work together again someday and continue building our relationship in the future. Kenny To those of you who have had bad experiences while following a whole food plant based (WFPB) diet, or vegan diet, I’m really sorry about that. Please remember that I'm definitely no doctor, so everything I say is simply my personal opinion and shouldn't be taken as medical advice. I’d also suggest consulting with your doctor before acting on information learned through RU-vid. Besides that, as I continue to learn about the different things that can be wrong inside the gut like infections, candida, or other types of bacterial overgrowths like SIBO (shout out Mike HYGG), I realize that a vegan diet may not be ideal for everyone. The vegan diet has come under a lot of scrutiny lately, and I think that is a good thing. Diets/styles of eating should all be scrutinized and evaluated because they are extremely important to health and longevity. While there are plenty of little things relating to the vegan diet that are being criticized, I absolutely think there are still some greatly positive benefits that can be attained on a WFPB diet. Once again, I am not a vegan nor do I ascribe to a purely WFPB diet. However, I am interested and passionate about all things relating to nutrition. As I’ve said before in other videos, I think there are multiple ways to optimize the gut microbiome. So, I am planning on doing a series of videos that explore the different routes, diets, and styles of eating that may help in combating IBD and attaining excellent gut health. One will be entirely based on a vegan diet, with all of the modifications that I would make in order to aggressively optimize the gut microbiome. In the meantime, I’d like to ask you all to please be respectful to High Carb Health and the work that they do. This video was not meant to be a hit piece on HCH. It was meant to simply be the chronological chain of events, and thought processes of my healing timeline. I understand that many of you have had horrible experiences following a vegan diet, and I’m truly sorry about that. IBD is a horrible disease, and attempting to heal from it naturally is not an exact science. That’s why I again encourage each of you to be very careful, and to consult a medical professional, before acting on information you learn from someone on RU-vid (including me). Mike the Heal Your Gut Guy, High Carb Health, and I all have differing thoughts and ideas about how to heal IBD. However, we all ultimately want the same thing for people and are on the same team (even though it gets pretty ugly at times haha). Please leave any thoughts, comments, or concerns. Love to hear from everyone.

@@AGuyCalledHenry Oh man, I couldn't agree more! I just got the diagnosis of ulcerative Colitis a week ago after an emergency trip to the ER, the pain had gotten unbearable! And for the last year and a half my Dr's just kept blaming it on IBS, but I just new it was more serious. Then I got a mouth full of seriously around 50 mouth ulcers, and finally my Dr took me serious. So I was scheduled for a Colonoscopy in May but now after some emergency CT scans, the Dr tells me that I have inflammatory bowel disease and that hopefully I will be hearing from a doctor with in a week and a half (its been 1 week, tried to call but the virus has there office shut down) to get in for the scopys. So this last week has been a mixture of emotions, fear being the main one, especially as now I am most likely at a greater risk to this evil covid-19 virus, and the pain has been insane! Thank god I now have some sweet T3 pain killers going, which I hate having to resort to but for the time being I have no choice. the fear of ending up with a shit bag is so intense for me....Anyway, lets lighten this rant up haha sorry! Kenny man, I have gone down a huge rabbit hole of information and I have to say that your content has been an absolute mental life saver for me man. So thank you, I have changed my diet to give my gut all the power it needs to heal, I still have an insane journey to recovery ahead of me but I know its possible and I know that I will so much better for it once I am in remission. Ok, woah haha all I wanted to do was say to A guy called Henry (Hi Henry by the way) is that I complete agree with what he wrote annnnnnd a novel later I am here. Thanks for giving me hope dude. Thank you!!! I love to hear your journey in this video. I've had ulcerative colitis for 45 years. For the first 28 years I took drugs which helped for a while and then quit working. It got so bad they wanted to remove my intestine and I said I've got to find a different way. Then my stepmom discovered the specific carbohydrate diet which I stayed on religiously for one year. I was in remission ( no drugs) for at least 15 years. I got really sloppy with my diet. That combined with having to go on an antibiotic for a UTI threw me into a flare. I started shoring up my diet, but nothing has worked. I came across your video about drinking cabbage juice and that has gotten me 90% better. So many things that I did before that I stopped doing like making homemade yogurt really helped so I will start working on getting more fermented vegetables and making kefir for the first time thank you for being willing to share this information with those that need it May God continue to bless you in your endeavors in your health and in life!

I went through the same thing. I got on Highcarbhealth's program, thought it was working, jumped the gun and made a testimony video way too soon, and then began dealing with symptoms again not too long after that. I found true healing through implementing a nutrient dense, ancestral diet with ton of fermented foods and bone broth. I regret making a testimony video for Highcarbhealth because I no longer believe the vegan diet is the way to go, especially for someone with IBD. It put me through a hell that probably could have been avoided but they claim has to happen as part of the detox. I needed animal products to fully heal.

It's been 16 years since I was originally diagnosed with U.C. I'm now eating a full range of foods without medication - even restaurant food if I like. Regular stools. Gas is the most measurable problem, and even that is quickly leaving my system now. Health has returned to me. Sometimes it hurts, but it's so mild comparatively now - and infrequent. The best part is that it's getting better and better. I'm learning to listen to my body. To hear what it asks for, and to give it what it wants. It's scary sometimes. I am not perfect, but I don't have to be. Diet, exercise, rest. Remembering what it felt like the last time I did something. Asking myself if I wish to feel that way again. Gosh, it's been wild. Thanks Kenny for your posts. Your visibility has helped, and will help many.

@@bhavyaparashar7486 The most impactful thing in my daily routine is remembering how I feel after doing something. I used to say "I won't have this." But telling myself not to eat something regularly didn't work. So I started letting myself have anything I wanted, so long as I remembered how I felt, and asked myself if I wanted to feel that way again. I began to desire painful foods less often, and eventually not at all. My diet has changed a lot as time goes. I've tried vegan, carnivore, and a mix. Right now I tend to have water right when I wake up. Then I stretch and do yoga. Finally I make myself a smoothie when I get hungry. The smoothie consists mostly of homemade kefir, ripe bananas, some Vega protein, and usually quite a lot of berries. I often have a cup or two of coffee after that with a lot more water as the day goes. Later on in the day I stretch and workout. The physical activity has been essential in my dietary development. Then I usually have something heavy at night. Often I'll eat a pound of ground beef with salt, pepper, and butter. When in doubt, eat a pickle. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, and homemade pickles tend to go nicely with a meal of ground beef. Now I find myself adding in more leafy greens, and other fruits and vegetables throughout the day. I've come to find that I can eat just about anything now, but it's still not optimal for me to ingest known offending foods. I even began to eat food from restaurants for a while - though I've shied away from that again, for many reasons. Some days I'll have cheesy eggs and bacon for breakfast, and more heavy things later too. Generally I feel well if I separate heavy things from light things between meals. Water consumption has become frequent. I carry a water bottle everywhere. I avoid bready things, and grains. Rice tends to be the most kind to my system of that category. Regularly I focus on: Rest, water consumption, fermented foods, whole foods, feeling well, exercise, remembering the results of my actions - and asking myself if I wish to feel that way again. There may very well be a better way than what I'm doing, but this is what it's like for me right now. That said, I just had some ice-cream, and felt good about it. Good luck.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I found you while trying to help my son to save his colon. You’ve been an inspiration for us. After a lot of trial an error, what worked for us was The Maker’s Diet, SBO probiotics, collagen and liquid iron. He started to improve in January 2019 and by March, the symptoms were gone and the hemoglobin levels back to normal. Now it’s been 8 months that he’s been out of danger. We’re going to keep the same regimen to make sure his colon is completely healed. Thanks! Blessings!!!

So far im diagnosed with colitis through CT scan. Currently going through appointments to have a colonoscopy to fully diagnose. This is my first flare up of my life and i feel its mild to moderate compared to others experience. I started off with stomach pain to the touch on the left side of my lower abdomin, gas, uncomfortable stomach cramping, loose stool/diarrhea, mucus and blood. With no time to waste i did some research and found your videos. I started intermittent fasting between 1pm and 9pm, 2 meals a day, as much probiotic foods as i can get, and i have been noticably better but still experiencing the flare (2 weeks from diagnosis). I have no stomach pain, just frequent bowel movements of diarrhea, blood, mucus and some constipation. I just started kefir, avacado, banana, blueberry, chocolate protein smoothies and hopeing to see a drastic change. I am not interested in being complete vegan if i dont have to be, my 2nd meal always contains chicken, and so far my symtoms are not worse nor better but time will tell. Id like to thank you for posting your journey and sharing it with us because instead of feeling screwed and depressed, i now have hope, a challenge and a goal to reach. Sounds like quite the battle!

At the time of writing this comment, I am 46 years old. I was diagnosed with UC at 14 in 1989 (blood in stools, frequent BMs/diarrhea, nausea, significant abdominal pain, etc.). There was no internet and very little help for UC patients back then. I started doing Kung Fu at 15, and after talking to one of my instructors (he was some type of doctor, I can't remember what kind), and he recommended going on a pretty much vegan diet, similar to what you did. It completely got rid of all of my symptoms after doing it for a period of @ 2.5 years. At about the age of 17, I started resuming some meat consumption (lean cuts of white meat only and some tuna), and had no flares. I was in remission for over 20 years until life stress starting bringing back the occasional flare. Now, the only things I struggle with is the occasional mild flare (stress & cheating on diet during vacays) and seronegative peripheral arthritis, which is non-erosive, but definitely makes workouts hard sometimes due to the pain in the small joints of my hands. Great channel man! You're a real inspiration to others traveling this often lonely road. Blessings to you and yours!

Commertial kefir or yogurt is just garbage. Most brands use methods such as shock cooling to improve their shelf life, and it is mandatory in most countries. Unfortunately these methods kills of most probiotics. Prepare your kefir & yogurt at home. We Turkish people have been doing it all the time. It is soo easy. You may use pasteurized milk to prevent diseases. Just make your kefir at home. In Turkey, kefir brands usually document the amount of probiotics on their bottles. In comparison, home made Kefir approximately has 100 times more probiotics.

Kenny Honnas--I love your videos and believe they're highly informative. Summer 2014--I had something go very wrong with my digestive system. I got a massive hemorrhoid. I got hives all over my body and have had very little hunger sensation since. I'm on the way to restoring my digestive system thanks to your videos; however, I'm 32 years old and my testosterone is very low. For some years, I ate very little every day(chicken & some tacos as well as a spinach/cauliflower shake). I don't know if the decreased calorie consumption has caused my low-T or what, but I'm looking to re jumpstart my low Testosterone--particularly my free Testosterone. I actually live very close to College Station TX and was interested to know which doctor you used to prescribe you HCG as I've heard many doctors won't prescribe it. Thank you!!! You're a cool dude man!

so so happy for you. I hope and pray I can find healing as you have. I tried following some of your previous recommendations and had severe stomach pain. maybe I tried too much, too soon. seems fruit and me just hate each other. but I always hear such good about blueberries. So maybe I should simply try blueberries and kefir instead of raw milk with it and lay low on the veggies. This UC thing is so ugly.

@Knighttus 2 года назад
Raw milk is your problem, you shouldnt use any dairy products, and lower your sugar intake by alot and the fruits i would recommend are bananas and avocado, stay away from all gluten products and insoluble fiber... and of course you will need suplements such as vitamine d, b12, and iron... but first get a test to see which ones are low for tou.

I don't want to be the one who shares bad news but my guess is you are just in remission again. I suffer from UC as well. I have had it go into remission for years only to return again. It does not go away. In fact - in my latest flare up - it was actually the worst its ever been and I now suffer from joint pains in most all of my joints. The joint pains may have been there all along but I just never knew they were associated with the UC until my Doctor asked me if I was having any joint pains. I would love to find that there is a Complete and Total CURE for UC but I don't think it exists. One thing I have noticed is that EACH TIME I had a really bad flare up - it happened during a stressful time in my life. I believe that STRESS is a major factor. Just my opinion.

It's in the experimental phase. I took BPC-157. Research shows it heightens the healing of many different types of tissue from tendon, muscle, and the nervous system. It can also increase blood flow back to injured sites, protects the bowels, organs & prevent stomach ulcers. So, 2 years so far with no U.C. & my bowel movements are easy, every day, perfect.

Hi Kenny, will you be making a video on what type of meals you ate on the "optimising gut microbiome" diet? It would be great to see how you worked those elements like kefir, fermented veg, etc into your meals to ensure you get enough variety. You also mentioned you can now eat junkfood and greasy foods; I imagine you do not mean you eat these super regularly, but rather occasionally and as treats? When you eat unhealthy foods, do you then usually follow a very healthy diet for a set time after that before indulging again?

Hey Kenny, I hope all is well with you. The main reason I revisited this video today is because I recalled you saying you believe you had experienced E.Coli that sent you into a severe flare. Well, I currently have reason to believe that I currently have E. Coli. My UC has gone from mild to severe in just two days. The potential E. Coli. started with a severe headache, then fever, and then cramping in my colon and diarrhea. It basically feels like a bad stomach bug that isn't making good friends with my colitis... Did you have a fever and other flu-like symptoms with your E.Coli? (My fever was 102.5). Thanks for all your great content man!

Hey man, sorry to hear you're in a bad spot right now. I don't specifically remember having a fever, but I felt horribly weak with stomach cramps/pain and multiple episodes of diarrhea almost every few hours. Spent most of the day on the toilet. It was very much like a bad stomach bug that caused a UC flare and continued to persist. I think it would be very helpful to go to a doctor and get tested to find out whats going on. That was a miserable time in my life and it can be even worse for some people than it was for me. Definitely think it's a good idea to go see a doctor. Will be praying for you man!

Thank you, I really appreciate your kind words. I really enjoy posting information that helped me and I want people to be able to choose what they want their lifestyle/diet to look like rather than be told which one they have to follow. I think HCH has a lot of good info and they have gotten many people better. I think I would have eventually healed on the HCH protocol, but I wanted more freedom than the vegan diet allowed. All of my main points and the essential information to my protocol is on my channel (and I will continue to post more), but I also do online coaching, and I do charge for it. It's not necessary, my goal is for people to be able to watch my channel and have all the tools they need to heal for free. The online coaching/consulting is just if people really want to talk to me directly and have me help them with a more customized plan. Hope you're doing well!

A vegan diet did not work for me as well, however a vegetarian diet was fine. Kefir is what made the big difference. I was mostly healed however always still had a burning sensation in my rectum which I never could heal. Note however that I was never even as close as strict with diet as you are! I tried completely raw vegan, however only for a week. After a year of no Kefir my symptoms are slowly returning, first as irritable bowel syndrome and I know what is coming next. Time to get some Kefir again! For all the vegans out there. Use Kefir like medicine. It works. If you can stomach it (I hate animal products), drink it every day for the rest of your life. It seems like some people have a genetic predisposition to accumulate bad bacteria in the gut. I'm definitely one of them. For Kenny, great channel and thanks for sharing your road to health with the world. I should mention however that I don't believe adding red meat to your diet is neccessary. All the blue zones (above average lifespan) are mostly vegan. However for IBD sufferers, Kefir is the key to fast recovery. I honestly think that was your major breakthrough. Not even fermented veggies has the same healing power (I tried that before I tried Kefir. Marginal results).

Thank you for these amazing videos. I started alternate fasting and having very high levels of probiotic foods, and supplements (c, d, etc) that I am surely missing, and I feel great and have been without symptoms for a few days. I wonder if the biggest part is the fasting which allows inflammation to go down, and also the probiotics. Do you ever have any fat or anything during the fast? I'm finding it hard sometimes to go the full 16 hours. Also, looking into an RO system.

I managed to have a fairly good run the last 20+ years without a terrible amount of flare-ups, though prednisone did still stunt my growth a little due to needing it at important parts of my teenage years, it could have been much worse. When I was 18, I forced myself to workout and eat primarily whole foods along with taking a lot of natural Anti-Inflammatories. This approach let me go the next 8 years with only 3 flare-ups bad enough to require steroids to stop. Fortunately, now that my previous routine no longer works and I have felt like complete shit for more than a year, I have found your videos that offer some hope to tackle the root cause of the problem instead of just managing the symptoms. Hopefully a few months from now I will have returned to normal and will know for sure that your methods work, at least for me as well.

I think part of the issue is that people with IBD in a flare can't keep eating whole foods. We have to take a step back and encorporate a majoritively liquid + fermented drink diet like kefir for instance, while keeping solids to a minimum like High cocoa Dark chocolate in order to take as much pressure off the digestive system as possible to allow it a break, adding things like meat may not make symptoms worse, but it doesn't help either because it's harder to digest than fermented foods. Correct me if I'm wrong, Regards.
