Colorado River - I Am Red

The Colorado River is a lifeline in the desert, its water sustaining tens of millions of people in seven states, as well as endangered fish and wildlife. However, demand on the river's water now exceeds its supply, leaving the river so over-tapped that it no longer flows to the sea. (Video by Pete McBride. Flights by Lighthawk, Ecoflight.)

I am commenting again because I absolutely love this documentary. It is stunning and educational, I think most people don't even know how much they rely on the Colorado for their everyday lives and they need to know. This is a major thing that is going on and people need to do their part to help.

Amazingly well done. We used this as a presentation for our local land trust, the Colorado Headwater's Land Trust. We are so blessed to have the headwaters of the Mighty Colorado in our County. I hope this raises awareness along the lines of the film Watershed. It is not too late people! It is not!

This was very well made, thank you for the hard work you put into it. I find it heartbreaking that this beautiful video has under 300,000 views (vs what, a billion over anything Kardashian?). This video teaches and it inspires, it is succinct and visually appealing, and at the end it provides how to find more information on how to contribute to change. I hope people visit the website, or at least Google or read to find out more about this important subject. Things could change for the better if more people decided to care, and if everyone recognized that every single one of us does have the power to change things.

You cry because what is being done to this river (and several others) is a sin of the greatest magnitude. We have been granted dominion over this land and all creatures therein. With that task comes stewardship to care for and tend the lands. We are supposed to be good stewards of the land and not abuse this sacred trust we have been given. Sadly, mankind has a history of destruction of our natural resources. I have been a professional river guide for 43 years including 5 years in the Grand Canyon. Rivers are literally the lifeline of this planet. If we don't take care of them we will suffer terrible consequences. Please join the fight to protect this river...

This river has survived for millions of years, but we have managed to damage it, possibly irrevocably, in a matter of decades. Somewhere along the way, as we strive to harness the planet for our own personal advancements and comfort, we have forgotten the most important fact...natural resources are finite.

The only solution is to immediately tell the communities in the desert dependent upon that river that they can't have their lawns any more. You just don't get a lawn if you live in Las Vegas. Sorry. There's just not enough water for you to have your english-style lawn. Society could still spare enough water to have lawns in places like public parks and baseball fields, but as for having a green grass covered lawn in your backyard, you're going to have to make peace with the idea that that isn't going to happen. People can still have yards; just plant native species that can survive on just a few inches of water a year. If we fail to do this now, we will cause people to die of thirst because we want our front lawns to look pretty.
@Kev376
@Kev376 6 лет назад
Yah no lawns, no giant open ponds, man made lakes which promote massive evaporation and water loss to the ground. And I think we need to stop farming in the middle of the desert, it's kinda rediculous that you would farm in the desert when the midwest has tons of land great for farming and tons of rain all year around. Just build the farms where you have alot of water like the Mississippi River ect. The problem with desert land is that it hasn't had water on it in so long that it absorbs water much faster than non desert area's, this makes it take more water to keep the land wet to farm.
@bavondale
@bavondale 6 лет назад
the people, the lawns, the golf courses, the pools mean so little compared to the agriculture using their "part". You could completely move all the people out of arizona, las vegas, and southern california and still not have enough water. Farming is using 83% of the water pulled from the colorado

Become active. If you live in the west, advocate native plants. Talk to your politicians about water management. Write congressmen. Experience the river and learn about it, learn how to care for it, what the river needs, and what it represents to nature. People move to deserts then make laws requiring lawns, it's seriously ridiculous, and the damage we do in this regard must be publicized.

Colorado been getting good snow packs and yes there is some drought but the real problem for Colorado River as this video pointing out man has made to many dams from west Colorado through three states man is sucking more water than the Colorado River can deliver, California is pulling this river down badly why can’t LA suck water from the Pacific Ocean and filter the salt out purify the water they can but they want Colorado River cause it’s cheaper to produce. California going to have to get water somewhere else cause the river needed for agriculture and electricity and water for Arizona, Nevada, and western Colorado. If they don’t stop the over usage of water with California the Colorado River will cease to exist in Arizona and Nevada as she’s dried up in the Delta in Mexico where she use to drain in the sea plus Mexico been using the Colorado water for yrs today it’s bone dry what a shame! 😢

The estimated age of the Earth is 4.6 - 4.7 billion years. Anyone who's ever taken a geology class can tell you that. The Colorado River was consolidated to it's present course over 2 million years ago. Which is fairly recent in geologic time, when you consider that the oldest rocks exposed at the bottom of the Grand Canyon are 2 billion years old.

While I agree with you, don't put all the blame on Phoenix. The river is still quite full when it hit's the AZ western border. Southern CA, with its golf courses, lush lawns and tropical landscaping are the ones who suck the river completely dry. You know those rich movies stars can't live without their privacy hedges and hot weather misters.
