Federal transportation officials are investigating an unauthorized inflight cockpit visit by a coach for the Colorado Rockies during a United Airlines charter flight last week from Denver to Toronto.
Video surfaced this week that appears to show Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens sitting in a pilot’s seat while the April 10 flight was at cruising altitude. It is against federal regulations for unauthorized people to be on the flight deck.
He can be seen and heard on the video joking with other people in the cockpit - including a person in a pilot’s uniform and at least one other person who does not appear to be an airline employee - and says the plane is at 35,000 feet (10,670 meters).

It might seem innocent enough but there was a Russian pilot that let his son sit in the left seat and the boy nudged the controls just enough to cancel the auto pilot. I dont remember all the details but the plane entered a nose down spiral that they didnt recover from and all aboard died.

I am a retired captain from UAL that did several charter flights in my time. pre 911 we would leave the cockpit door open and people could come up and see the operation 1 at a time while in cruise. post 911 the cockpit door has to remain closed at all times while in flight, no exceptions. The airline SOP's ( standard operating procedures) are an FAA approved document and are in essence like the FAR's for the airline and have equal weighting if they are knowingly disregarded. So actually there were several SOP's broken here and will be treated like breaking an FAA FAR. As far as safety goes, if you play the what if game... engine failure, cabin decompression are a couple of the biggies at altitude, it could turn into a cluster f - - k real quick, so yes it was an unsafe thing to do. and lastly, making a video of the event is just plain stupid and you cannot fix stupid....just my 2 cents....

I am a retired UAL Captain. I have flown many charter flights at United. Back in the day we would have the cockpit door open so that anyone on the aircraft could visit. Since 911 that went away. As for my conduct on such a flight I would never allow any person to sit in my seat or the First Officer seat. That is just a big no-no. I have filmed operations on the flight deck before , but you will never see any of those films on any social media sites including UTube. That Captain broke the rules, FAR's and was just a real stupid moment for a pinch of fame. FAA will most likely pull his license and there goes the job! To the rest of you out there, it's not worth your whole career! Very unprofessional. United is strictly a FAR Part 121 carrier. They do not have a 135 Certificate. Part 135 is designed to allow a Part 91 operation to be for HIRE. Most all the major airlines are Part 121. United has conducted many Charter flights over the years, all Part 121. Was it unsafe? D**ed right it was. Not outwardly but a very sinister way of "normalizing deviance" until it does become unsafe on the face. FWIW

A Russian passenger jet crashed killing all aboard when the Captain let his children sit in the Captain’s seat & when the son turned the controls he inadvertently disengaged the autopilot and began actually steering the plane without anyone noticing. I believe he put the plane into a stall, and before anyone could figure out what was going on, they crashed. Before this incident, pilots were unaware that on this plane, forget what it was, that the autopilot could simply be disengaged by turning the controls. Air Disasters is an interesting show for anyone that enjoys aviation.

The flight deck crew shouldn't even be opening the door for this coach. As innocent as it may have been, the rules are explicitly clear. Even under Part 135 - a charter flight - an aircraft over a certain size isn't supposed to allow access to the flight deck to non-crew members. Some code-share carriers have aircraft so small that they are required to keep the cockpit door open, simply for the fact that the pilots do double duty as flight attendants. I daresay on most Part 135 aircraft there isn't even a cockpit door...But this is pretty cut and dry. Most of us "little people" are subjected to body cavity searches just to get let into the cabin. This was a serious lack of judgment on the passenger, and a dereliction of duty by the flight crew, warranting at least a suspension, if not dismissal. Not to be mean, but these were rules that were written after, and paid for by many a hijack and ground victim over the years. The privilege of flying charter does not exempt you from the security and safety rules. We have enough to worry about with the flight crews themselves...

Read your FAR's.🤦‍♂️United is a Part121 carrier. Their certificate is attached to their operations manual. The cannot operate Part 135 (30 seats or fewer). Part 135 isn't as loose as you say there are very strict regs there too. In this case there were multiple non crew on the flight deck. The FO was sitting there laughing. He's required to wear an oxygen mask if the other pilot leaves his seat. The hitting coach pretended to push buttons like autopilot switch and several times pretended to push the yoke forward. The captain's access back to his seat was blocked by the female recording the video, the hitting coach and another big guy. The regs aren't there to enforce policies normally applied to the little people. The regs are to insure the safety of all the people on the flight (including family and innocent children of team members) but also all the little people on the ground. This is a heavy airliner not a Cessna 172.

If it wasn't unsafe, the safety rules in place for this very thing wouldn't exist. Any pilot that says "don't video this, don't post this on social media" is knowingly attempting to coverup breaking rules. It's seems questionable to tell pilots to beware of exposing themselves when they break the rules like that. A baseball player is no safer to have on the flight deck than a general member of the public.

I will preface this that I am a GSC for an Airline, so I only work on the ground side of things, not the inflight side. But I do have to go through these parts every year to renew my position. The pilot is most likely going to get reprimanded by the FAA and united for those situation. Rules on Charters are a lot looser compared to commercial, but even with good intentions, this is an insanely unsafe thing the pilot did here. I think because of this being posted online, and how publicized this is, I think the FAA and even United might make an example of this pilot to squash this kind of situation from happening again. If any commercial pilots want to correct me or elaborate more for me that would be great, because as I said, I am a GSC. I deal with the ground, not the air. Having to deal with the FAA as much as I do, I can promise they do not fuck around and something is going to happen to this pilot.

I know nothing about the FAA rules or anything about flying; so my question is why would the 1st Officer's job be at risk? What did they do wrong? It was the Captain that granted the Coach permission into the cockpit, it was the Captain that left their assigned seat and invited the Coach to sit down, and it was the Captain that recorded the breach of FAA rules. Was the 1st Officer duty bound to overrule his Captain' and eject the Coach from the Cockpit? When the Captain got up from his chair and invited the Coach to sit there; was the 1st Officer obligated to assume the Captain's chair and controls and direct the Coach to sit in his seat instead? But then if that is the case isn't is a damned if I do and damned if I don't situation on the 1st Officer? Again I am confused as why the 1st Officer is in trouble and their job is at risk. @BrodieBrazil So the federal aviation regulations (FAR) applies to the COMPANY that’s operating the aircraft, not to the FLIGHT. This was a part 121 COMPANY doing a charter flight, therefore part 121 of the FAR applies to the flight. Both pilots will lose their jobs with United, United might get fined, captain will probably lose license, especially if they were the one that recorded it, 1st officer probably won’t but might if they didn’t raise as issue about it. The flight attendants will probably also lose their jobs, because on those flights, they are the reps to the team and fly on every flight with the team, whereas the pilots change out, at least at the companies I’ve talked to, should have prevented him from going into the cockpit.

Question--this coach appeared jovial. Could he have been drinking? An FAA investigator should ask him and the flight attendance in charge of the liquor if that was the case. As a passenger, I would be somewhat anxious to know that a drunken untrained person was sitting at the controls. Even a sober untrained person in the #1 seat is unlawful. I remember when I was a kid flying in the 1970's, it was commonplace, yes commonplace, to be invited up to the cockpit to check it out. No, I don't recall seeing any kids sitting in the pilot's seat (I wasn't the only one invited). I am 100% certain I did so on a United flight from Chicago to Seattle probably around 1974, on a 747, because I remember being escorted up the stairs (and by the way, the forward lounge and first class was amazing, I remember being in awe at how "modern" it looked for the time). I also got kids pilot wings, in fact I think I still have them. I know I did this more than once. Sure, I get that the security issues have changed (although back in the '70s, hijackings were happening with some regularity). However, as a member of the flying public and a private pilot, I truly don't see the big deal with a known passenger (to the crew in particular) on a charter flight visiting the cockpit. Sitting in the seat may be more "iffy" in my book, and filming it and posting it is definitely a dumb thing to do.
@jamie5388
@jamie5388 Месяц назад
The question that should be asked is, was that an emotional decision or a logical decision based on professionalism? Because if a pilot is making emotional decisions how is he going to react in other situations? In my opinion it was completely unprofessional as there are also others at risk besides just the people on board.

This would be a rule Part 135 flight as all of the charters flown by Part 121 airline companies are. United Airlines, which is a registered Airline with the FAA can file their flights under Part 91, 121, or 135. They own the aircraft and are paying the flight crew, but the team is paying the bill, and the passengers didn't by a ticket, and in fact are not able to unless they go through the entity chartering the flight. The team can put whoever they want to on the plane, this is why they typically don't depart from the public airport terminal. FYI, it is all about which box is checked with the flight plan is filed. FYI II - When an airline flys a plane of theirs for testing, or to move it from one city to another, those are Part 91 flights. This all said, I have a hunch that letting him sit there is probably ok under the FAA rule since the 1st officer was right there. As far as the rules of the airline.... I think he's in trouble there and his union won't be much help.
@whyhide5806

FAR 135 is for aircraft that have 30 seats or less. This was a B-767. Also, this was a violation of FAR 121.547. United's Operation Specifications (OP Specs) does not allow operation for this charter other than FAR 121.

He pays the insurance, he's liable for any consequences of your actions, and he'll bear the consequences of bad publicity or possible regulatory sanctions. And you knowingly violated the terms of your contract. I'm not aware of any employer who'd consider this as akin to any kind of private activity he isn't involved in.

A commercial flight did crash I believe in Russia because the pilot allowed his two children into the cockpit and sit in the pilot and copilot seats. One of them accidentally turned off the autopilot and no one noticed and the plane crashed a few minutes later. So this sort of thing did happen before that resulted in disaster. So I do believe that the pilots should face some penalties for this because it shouldn't be encouraged and its potentially unsafe.
