I was given one of these today 7-8-23. It was passed down from my Great grandfather. My uncle had it and today he passed it to me. Serial number is 4 digit and was made in 1903. The 2 serial numbers match. It is cool to have in my possession now.

I mean yeah I like it and appreciate the history, but it definitely has gone out of style. Modern revolvers have mostly gone out of style. When was the last time you saw someone carrying a colt new service?

The other replies don't understand that the "cool factor" of old revolvers will always be there, even if they aren't the carry option of choice for everyone. (I know people who still carry a revolver.) To own and shoot for fun though? Heck yeah.

.45 LC really needs to make a comeback for modern carry revolvers. It’s manageable recoil, reliable and plenty deadly.

I share your fetish with the New Service. Mine was made in 1931. That vintage had checkered walnut grips with gold Colt medallions, and the finish is a lighter blue. Insanely well built revolvers! Edit: these arms had the Colt Positive Lock, a steel bar which made them drop safe. If your thumb slipped when cocking the hammer, the firing pin wouldn’t hit the primer. The frames were drop forged from a single piece of solid steel with no joints to lessen strength. Good old American quality!🇺🇸

Seeing all your beautiful toys has made tomorrow "wheel gun" day at the range for me. Mine are modern but I do have Grand Pa's , U.S. Revolver ( Iver Johnson circa 1930). It is still quite accurate with .38 S&W. Hard to find the ammo so it only gets a work-out and cleaning 3x a year. Your collection is amazing.

Two of my favorites are a 2 inch .38 IJ (1904), and a 2 inch .32 IJ (1896), both hammerless and fun to bring out occasionally. Enjoy.

Those early revolver grips were made of a pre-composite material, " Gutta Percha" coming from the sap of a tree from India , by the same name.

that's a very nice gun, the finish is fantastic for its vintage. I have a 1912 Colt in 38 it says army special but it doesnt have the spot on the grip for a lanyard. It was my grandpa's gun and the finish shows its age and wear, it looks like it had not been stored well as the blueing is pitted pretty badly but it gives it a pretty nice patina. the gun is fully functional and incredibly accurate. I dont shoot it much but I do take it out now and then and run a couple chambers of ammo through her just to enjoy it and remember my Grandpa.

I really wanted a 45 Colt revolver and living in MA my options were limited. As far as new production revolvers go I could have gotten a Smith & Wesson Governor or an XVR but they don't have the classic feel that I was looking for. The only other option would have been a Ruger vaquero, which are nice but I don't like how the new models release the cylinder by opening up the loading gate. So I had to go with an older revolver and given that a colt single action would have run me at least $3,000 if I was lucky I went with the colt new service. I paid a little over $1,000 for it and has a nickel finish, probably not the original finish but it was very well done and beautiful. I love it!

First - I really enjoy your videos. Informative and entertaining. Next - All your rounds at the gong were to the right. You can really see it in the video. I'm just starting to get into revolvers. Currently have a Chiappa 22LR/WMR, Smith & Wesson Performance Center 45ACP and a Taylors & Co 1873 in 357 magnum. I'm more of a 1911 fan. Keep teaching me new stuff. Keep it up.

Great video! Nice old pistol. I agree, guns are made to be shot! When I get a new gun, I can hardly wait to get home to shoot it, and sometimes I don't, especially if the store has a range.

If it's in rough shape might as well as restore it if you want to. If it was in fair shape I would say leave it be to maintain its value

@@BertReno I want to restore it, only thing is that because someone had done a chrome finish on it at one point but now that finish is rough it would cost a lot to have a restoration done since the chrome would have to somehow be removed.

Man, I’ve never really been much of a gun guy. Did a bit of target shooting with air rifles and .22s back in high school, but otherwise really don’t have any interest in guns… except when it comes to revolvers. There’s just something incredible about these guns. I can’t get enough of them.

By the time the Military adopted the M1909, the cartridge had been improved. Among other things the rim circumference was increased a small amount so the Star Extractor would have more metal to work against.

When the RCMP carried the 51/2 inch New Service in 45 colt stopping power was never an issue. Even if the opponent was wearing heavy clothing not an issue.

If I may make a suggestion. I used to have the same issue with not knowing where to hold on target. I made a journal that shows a target and where to hold on target. It has been helpful.
