My grandpa recently passed away and me and him used to watch your videos Hickok. And surprisingly in his will he left me his guns which included a Hawkins 50 cal, browning lever 22, savage 22, a colt bunt-line special and finally, two golden colt frontiers scouts...... Old, classic firearms like this that will never ever go out of style always amaze me. I can't think of any other product off the top of my head that is still manufactured to this day, by the same company, 100+ years later, that is essentially identical to what it was in 1887 and still you can buy one in 2017. Firearms are amazing and people who can't appreciate that are really missing out.

From the black powder handloads, to the wood handled gunsmith screwdriver and 1873 Winchester on the table, to the Colt Peacemaker logo on his cap! Some very nice looking guns from back in the day when it was important to have your pistol shoot the same cartridge as your rifle.Another great video,I always learn something when I"m here.I remember talking to an old cowboy that was in the same old folks home as my grandpa. This gentleman, who's name was Slim, used to drive cattle up from Montana into the Caribou Country of British Columbia. He said one time when riding through Kelowna his horse reared up at a rattlesnake coiled on the trail. He pulled this exact same type of gun and tried shooting the snake. He said it took all 5 rounds but he did eventually shoot it.He was an extremely interesting man who had seen much in his day.I wish I had spent more time with him and had written his stories down.

It was handy to have both rifle and handgun chambered in the same cartridge, but quite a few did not, apparently, since the .45 Colt was far and away the most popular caliber for the Colt SAA, and there WAS no rifle at all chambered in .45 Colt.

@@hickok45 I would like to have both a revolver and rifle in .44.However,while I can get a plug to put in the rifle to limit it to 5 rounds, the handgun is more....difficult.Our handgun laws are insane,a totally different firearms course for another $250 ,registry at the cop shop, permits to take the gun to and from the range, notification of changing addresses,2 safes [1 for guns,1 for ammo] and the worst: they have the right to enter and search my home anytime a handgun offense is committed in my area.So I hope you guys do more old style gun vids because this is one Canadian who really loves watching.Thank you for answering and clearly the .44/,45 thing up,I really didn't expect such a large channel to respond.Cheers to you and keep that lovely bullet smacking metal sound coming.

For outlaws and lawmen both, the convenience of being able to carry both pistol and rifle chambered for the same 44-40 round was huge. Jesse James carried his Winchester and his Smith and Wesson 44-40 combo. Brother Frank carried his Winchester in tandem with his Remington model 1875 chambered in 44-40. Colt had the Frontier Six Shooter in 44-40. For "long riders" the ability to use one caliber of ammunition was a miracle of technology.

That is the most beautiful 6 shooter I have ever seen. To think that that level of craftsmanship, innovation and beauty was achieveable in 1886 on the frontier is wonderful. Gives me a real sense of nostalgia even though I was not alive then...

Reloaded 44/40 in black powder with my grandpa in the 80s. We shot his 4 inch Colt and had a blast. No one knew where the rounds were going. The barn wasn't in danger. Now I could make the round work. It was really fun. He let me make mistakes that I understand now. Thank you Rex.

can i ask if you think it wouldn't be more patriotic to accept your fellow americans and to respect their liberty to possess different, and in some cases radically different, opinions than your own? rather than arguing with people or "exposing" them?

Stag grips are beautiful but you have to take care of them or they'll develop cracks like that one has. Clean them in mineral oil and put a coat of renaissance wax.

Since you mentioned "experts" I thought it may be necessary to describe the term. An "ex" is a "has-been" and a "spurt" is a drip under pressure. Therefore, an expert is a has-been drip under pressure. I have never heard of a '94 Winchester chambered in handgun length cartridges. It was made for the .30/30 and the .32 Winchester Special. The Marlin 336 competition for it also came in the rimless .35 Remington. My M336 is chambered for .219 Zipper, which I also believe was available in the M94. Some time ago, during the last century, I bought an Italian made copy of the 1873 Colt. The only ammo I could find for it then was made by Winchester and it's recoil was very light. I thought they were loading it down because of the cast iron frame guns that are still around. I checked out the loading manuals to see what black powder loads were appropriate for the .45 Long Colt, loaded some up and went to the range. Besides the fact that I had to wait until the smoke cleared to see what I hit, I noticed that the noise and the recoil were greater than the factory loads. So I assumed that the factory loads were drastically underloaded, and that mild smokeless handloads may be safe in older revolvers. But BE CAREFUL. Now that I have a Ruger Blackhawk Convertible, I have found that hotter jacketed hollow point factory rounds are available. I have a couple of changes in mind for my old clone. Since the 1851, 1860, 1861 & 1873 have a lot of parts that are interchangeable, the longer 1860 grip assembly would help to give me something to hold on to. The other change involves adding an adjustable rear sight. I have seen Dixie Gun Works sells a sight that dovetails into the frame, and S&W K-Frame sights have also been put on SAA's (I think Elmer Keith did that.) Since I am not yet that experienced with my mini mill, that I think that I will start with the grip project.
