Here's a common topic that comes up in classes, but that most shooters have problems with... Malfunction Drills. Should be easy, and it is. However, many shooters get "Brain Lock" when their pistols jam and end up fumbling through fixing the problem.
For most people, we just aren't used to having a pistol jam, especially the military. If you are running good military ball ammo, it will almost always go bang. Same if you are running good ammo through good pistols. That reliability to great in combat. However, the reliability to creating a lack of skill or lack of "muscle memory." IF you ever DO have a malfunction, you need to have the muscle memory to clear it properly without ever thinking about it.
So, how do we practice this? I suggest using dummy rounds, like we do in our TR courses. Next, when you do practice, ensure you practice clearing malfunctions properly. That's what this video shows.
I hope you enjoy. Now, get out there and practice. TR

I love your presentation on this topic. Another possible malfunction which causes us to do remedial action is a failure to extract. I was taught to remove the magazine like you demonstrated and then cycle the slide a couple times before re-inserting the magazine and chambering a round.

Yes, I agree. If I take the time to Lock the slide to the rear,I’m gonna remove the mag and rack the slide a couple times to make sure the chamber is clear. Then reinstall that mag…

I'm a week late, but when you went over the stovepipe and whoever said to slide the casing out with your hand, I immediately thought of what would happen if you missed and hit the front blade. There goes the front of your finger or hand. Also, I've heard double feed and figured out what that was on my own, but you showing a stovepipe made that click as well. This proves I need to get out and practice way more. I called a malfunction wrong, thinking I was dry, but it was a stovepipe on my rifle. (Seems to be common with one of my .22s.)

Exactly… don’t get hung up on names, as there are dozens of different types of malfunctions. Start with immediate action and, if that doesn’t work, then do remedial action behind cover.

On a double feed, what if the problem is because the just fired casing did not eject from the barrel chamber? Won’t sticking a new magazine in just create another double feed?

You visually look to see it chamber is clear… if not, or in dark, it doesn’t hurt to rack the slide again. Thanks for watching, TR

For a failure to extract (spent casing stuck in chamber while a fresh round is stuck behind it) does this type of malfunction always require remedial action to clear? 90% of the time I shoot that cheap Herters 115gr (lake city)
@shyman99
@shyman99 Год назад
This is nearly all of my malfunctions and remedial action seems to be required. I think it may be a result of not holding the weapon tight (limp wristing). It even happens with my glock & using good ammo. When it happens in competition, like requiring to shoot 10 rounds in 10 seconds, it is unfortunate. By the time I remove the magazine, lock open the slide, turn the weapon upside down, shake the spent round & live round out of the chamber, then reload, I usually have a few seconds left to finish up the remaining rounds.
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman Год назад
If you have a round in the chamber already, then yes, you will have to drop the mag

You perform the malfunctioning drill in the wrong way... When you face a malfunctioning drill or dobble feed.. You mast lock the slide to the rear.. Call for cover or if you are alone.. You need to find for cover first... Only then you lock the slide to the rear and remove the magazine from the receiver... And then toy mast rack the slide tree times... And only then you insert a fresh magazine in the firearm and you let the slide go forward and close the firearm and you can reassess and call for ready...

Good solid drills everyone must practice to be proficient. You neglected to cover shotguns. But lucky Potato Joe Biden did. Take your double barrel shotgun and fire both rounds. If attackers still a threat DO NOT just throw gun at them. Do a tactical quick disassembly. Now you have the stock, barrels, and fore end grip. You can throw pieces at three different attackers as you run 😂 Had an oddball jam last week. No click. Tapped but then unable to rack. Had Hell breaking down Glock. Turned out bullet was not properly seated. Too high. Just drove it in deeper. Never had that in any pistol especially Gen 1 Glock I’ve shooting since mid 80s. Would’ve sucked real bad in gunfight. This was factory PCM cheap hollow points. Entire box made it through QC seated 3/4 of way in. I should have noticed but just dumped box out and shoved them in magazine.
