I'm not sure how many realize that Luise Rainer was the first Oscar winner to win two in a row for Best Actress. And she's still alive, at 103. When you watch this episode, you are watching a great actress.
Goldenwinger001! The word Hun was used in both Wars not because the Germans looked like them but in their horrific treatment of the Civilian population in the areas they conquered. The Germans deserved the title of Huns mostly what they did during World War II.
-lassisvulgaris-according to Wikipedia, Washington commanded 3,100 militia, and 8,000 Continentals. 7,800 Frenchmen. The British Army, commanded by Cornwallis, numbered 7,200 men.
Quite right. But sometimes they had their moments, like under Napoleon. He did wonders with a conscript army, but bit over more than he could chew.I would not go as far as to call them cowards.as morale comes from the top,and for centuries officers were nobles, except under Napoleon, where many generals advanced from the ranks. On the other side, the best French soldiers, were, and are, foreigners. The concept of a foreign legion is genious....
Man, based on the self-righteous nonsense of Lt Hanley here (and some of the comments under this video), I can see why the French don't like Americans. That women was trying to protect her home and property (why shouldn't she), risking it all (and her life) to help an utterly pompous jerk.
Lt. Hanley is amazingly rude in this episode. The woman is taking him in, as a Nurse she is aiding him AND he is a guest in her home. All three of these things put her life at risk and he has the gall to talk down to her. The Countess should have given him over to the German Major and got a large reward... Being occupied by rude American soldiers isn't somehow better than being occupied by polite German soldiers. Hanley should see that.
Thank you lassisvulgaris! One more point of fact with Benjamin Franklin at the French court and his appeals for help and King Louis XVI who bankrupted his Country for the American Revolution and its success, which led to his down fall in the French Revolution France did more than enough for the New Nation of America. Besides the French troops that were at Yorktown the British were blocked from sending help or getting their men out by a French Fleet off shore.
Sure, the bravest died but they were the minority. Consider that the best French military unit doesn't take Frenchmen . . . or didn't, I think that the Foreign Legion changed their policy.
What does the ancestry of American soldiers have to do with anything? It is a cultural thing, not genetic. Someone is always there to rule. The French did it to others. The English as well. Mongols. Russians. The Germans were actually rather late to the game.
My sentiments exactly. Hanley shows an astounding level of ignorance in french culture and in how to deal with european aristocracy; he could have learned some courtesy from the german officers. Perhaps because he was a mustang, an officer who was promoted from the enlisted ranks, he had neither the education nor the refinement to know how to socially interact in a polite way.
@@ellisjames7192 I did not say that he was stupid, please reread my statement for clarity. With an education he would have had a better appreciation for the concerns and issues of people from another culture. One of the best things that I got out of a university education was my exposure to people from widely different cultures . This is probably why the US armed services generally require that one have a college degree in order to qualify for OCS. It isn't just about intelligence in order to be a good candidate for being a commissioned officer. Intelligence is a necessary but not sufficient quality. When I went into the Army in 1969 I didn't even have a high school diploma, but I scored in the top 1% on the AFQT(a Cat I classification) and was told by the examiners that I was qualified to enter OCS. I didn't, fortunately, because I would have been the world's worst officer.
Dude, the Huns weren't from Germany, they were from Asia. They may have occupied a big chunk of Yurrip but they weren't German. The Huns were short brown people not tall blonde people. You should try studying history yourself. However, back to the original point. The French culture is one of appeasement and cowardice. The brave resistance fighter was the exception and not the rule.
GoldenWinger001 the Huns were northern Europeans, one of the antagonists of the Romans. Most notable about them was that they halted the invasion by the Mongols of Ghengis Khan (who were from Asia) of Europe, which eventually preserved the rise of western civilization. Hungary is named after them.
