True. Refraction varies due to atmospheric conditions. However under "ordinary" atmospheric conditions the refraction is a function of distance, and the distances used in making long sights are generally short enough that anomalous atmospheric conditions will not affect the value very much.
Takeaways... refraction has minor impact if any at all. Refraction can't ever refract more than the level line (C). In other words worst case scenario r == C and that would make it impossible for someone to see an object that supposedly is below the horizon by more than C. Refraction seems to magically curve the same direction as earth and never any other way. 🤔

No.These curvature equations are valid only for shorter distances less than about 10km. If this distance is greater than that, most of the assumptions made to derive the equations are not valid.

If you're about 6ft tall on a ground that is level the further point you'd see (horizon) would be about 3 miles. If you saw the very bottom of a building 30 miles away, you'd have to be about 600ft higher than the ground level where the building is located.

you have to assume there is a curve on the earrh prior to this investigation. the problem is, curve of the earth has never been detected or recorded. the opposite has been recorded in high altitude helium balloons and with regular strsigh flat camera lense you will always see a FLAT Horzion LINE.

Why cant people accept the fact the benchmarks prove that water is level? Its data that has been around for over 100 years and was done by line of sight. All surveyors work off the same benchmarks and plane surveyors never account for curvature but the geocentric ones say they do. I'm I the only one that sees the deception? Level is NOT curved, it is flat & horizontal! Earth is observably & mathematically flat & can be treated as such when measuring elevation angles. Elevation angles can not be measured with a curved adjacent (baseline). The use of a sextant backs this claim.

It's a tutorial for Engineers and Surveyors on how to do their JOB GIVEN the FACT that the Earth is a sphere. "level" is a surface that is perpendicular to the pull of gravity. On a spherical planet (as all planets are) that pull is toward the center. Therefore the "level" surface is curved. If it were not (over long distances of course) the "horizontal surface" you describe would deviate from the earth's surface and be higher in altitude at one end than the other and no longer be "level".
