Part 1 of a 5-part verse-by-verse study of Alma 23-29, which recounts the history of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies. Part 1 covers Alma 23 (and looks back at a few additional lessons from Alma 18-22) and examines inadequacies in sharing the gospel, learning to learn from anyone, freedom to believe and disbelieve, righteous traditions, and true commitment. Join Jared Halverson for your weekly Come Follow Me study of the Book of Mormon!

I'm 71 and gave read the book of mormon many many times. I have learned more from your teachings than all 25 plus times. Thank you even if you started in Jacob. God bless you and your family, please keep up GOD'S work. I love your other lessons also. Thank you again!

Brother Jared...I love your pure spirit in your teaching...your heart is deeply involved with what you teach. I have come to truly believe that The scriptures are alive. They will teach us, as you explained over and over the Words of life, in different ways each time...a lesson to be internalized by each reading. I have found that Temple work has this same quality...Truly the words and light of Eternal Life...the Covenant Path. Thank You, I feel so blessed to be learning from you. David....You brother in the gospel😇

I can relate to the part about spiritual metabolism. When I was an investigator of the church, I would look around in awe at how happy and spiritual everyone appeared. I didn't see all the hard work that each of those spiritual giants had devoted to prayer, fasting, and study. At the time, I felt so inadequate that I almost stopped going. Thank God that our ward was so warm and loving, that I stayed since 2010!
@Unshaken

I'm so grateful you were able to get past those initial feelings, and glad that your ward was so welcoming. It can be hard to think everyone around us is perfect, just like it's hard when we realize that they aren't!

Brother Halverson💞 I’ve watched almost all the others give their version of Come Follow Me lessons....BUT when I stumbled across yours! I knew I would only watch your lessons, you teach in depth, you make the scriptures come alive from the very beginning and you continue to keep me (us) captivated through your whole lesson, I watch them almost every day!💞 we can tell you love our Savior Jesus Christ, you love the scriptures, and oh how you love teaching! You are a great teacher....thank you for teaching me how to love learning again💞you make them come alive...I am a 71 year old woman!YIKES🤪 I’m not a scholar by any means, but oh how I would love to be.It takes me a long time to get things...but when I do I’ve got it...the bad part about all this is...I never learned how to really learn something and how to remember things...my husband and I got married when I was 16 he was 17 we have now been married a very long time which I’m so thankful for💞he is my live, my love, my sweetheart...so it took us about 20 years before we learned about the truth of the scriptures, The gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints...and then I hate to say I was kind of studying for a good week or two then off for awhile back on for to long I did this...these last 15 years I’ve been studying...but my brain tells me I might have missed the boat.😏 but I’ll keep it up with your amazing help and your desire to share your knowledge with little old me...if you have any great suggestions I’d love to hear them.💞 thank you for your great love of the Lord and His scriptures...we enjoy you and your teaching method, simple.... yet so profound please know of our thanks and love to you for sharing.💞💞just a bit more than you wanted to read!🤔☺️

You are an awesome teacher - while listening and preparing for my catchup lesson with you, I suddenly felt I’ve got to share you, told about you to my Bishop and my best friends but today half way through thought I’ve got to actually give them this lesson! So I’m not very technical but emailed this lesson to them, whilst doing that my carer (I had cerebral palsy at birth) that is so awesome, non member pings me from messenger ‘what religion are you, I’m just telling my friends about you’. So within minutes your wonderful, need to teach the gospel has past on to many of my friends. Regarding my carer just said all questions welcome. I was actually wanting to go full blast missionary, but just told her our name, our proper name and where our chapel is. It is so true, when you love something so much, you just want to share.

I enjoy these lessons so much. Because you go verse by verse and dive in I have started to see that each verse really does have something to teach me. It's not just the true stories; it is the way they were written and the words used that bring insight and personal revelation. Now, when I sit down to read my scriptures I am excited for all the things I am going to learn. Thank you for your youtube channel.

I love the new intro! :) So cool! The spiritual metabolism analogy is great! It's a true principle and also a caution to be more careful with our words. Because our words can shape perception and we shouldn't discredit the effort of others. Thank you for sharing! Thank you for the reminder to love above all else. That is an answer to my prayer of how to be more helpful in my calling during this pandemic! :) You're the best, Bro Hal! Thanks for all your time on these videos and your family for their support of you to make them! It must take a lot of time editing. 💖

I know how feel to be the only one to accept the true gospel. I am Italian decent and I was only one to joying the Church in my family of 9 brothers and sisters. I have a motto about baptism : Now .. or later.. If they do not want to be baptize now , I will do later.

Nearly all are active in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Love your motto about baptism. It is founded on love and they all know that.

I was blessed to be able to work for a large semi conductor company for almost 20 years. I only answered one question during the interviewing process as they had seen that I had served a mission. I had been diagnosed with a nerve disease at the age of 18, I refused to accept that I was disabled. No 18 year old wants to hear that. Anywho a few years before I went out on disability a boss had actually told me that I needed to lower my expectations of my coworkers. I was working 12-14 hours a day walking 6 miles in carbon fiber AFO (my muscles are too week to pick up my feet) anywho the AFO;s don't bend and they have no cushion. When I was going thru the process of disability, the DR asked me why I waited so long to get a disability tag for the car? I had been in active for 10 years, I had just finished a 4 day work week and when I got to my car I was in so much pain that I couldn't press the gas peddle to get home. I had to pull over a few times to message my foot. Anywho I made the commitment to get back into the church the RIGHT way and started reading the Book of Mormon with the understanding of praying to God and seeking his help to do it. When I got to Alma 17 2-3 I had understood it that these boys had fasted too much and prayed too much in the 14 years. I needed that and continued to finish the Book. At the end of reading the Book of Mormon I had diarea of the mouth, I could not wait to speak to the Bishop and get some things off of my chest. I started reading the Book of Mormon right away and the next time thru Alma I couldn't believe that I had misunderstood about Ammons fasting and prayer. However the Lord knew I needed to see it different at that time.

41:00 - It's also a way of putting someone down in a sneaky way, without looking like that's what you're doing. I learned that anything I can do after 10 years of study and practice is "talent", and anything I can't do is simply lack of desire to learn.
