I joined the church when I was 21. I am now 72. Your gift and dedication for digging into the Book of Mormon on these Come Follow Me lessons has me being so grateful and feeling so blessed that I found your RU-vid channel. I never really understood all of the "Book of Mormon Stories" completely until I started listening to your explanations. I have had my mind and spirit enlarged so much in the past few weeks from how you have been presenting the lesson material. I can understand so much better and my testimony of the Book of Mormon is growing. Thank you so much, Jared. Your lessons are not definitely a part of my weekly scripture study.

Thank you for your kind words, Val. The fact that you had the courage, faith, and spiritual sensitivity to find and accept the restored gospel as a young adult tells me a lot about you. That's the age group I spend my days with, and I love imagining them 50 years from now, still feasting on the words of Christ. Thanks for being an inspiration!

Oh my goodness. No words... honestly, I’ve written several lines only to erase them. Truly I have no words to express the impact of this discussion. Just listen and absorb the truths of what Alma and Amulek are preaching to us all. Thank you brother Halverson for your time and your testimony. What a beautiful way to begin my sabbath.

I have never enjoyed learning the gospel more! You have so much knowledge and such a wonderful way of explaining things and clarifing the gospel message. I loved the difference between 'probationary' and 'preparatory'. I had never noticed that before and always thought this life was a 'test' and I needed to pass it to return home to God. I loved how you clarified this.....it seems much more meaningful. Please continue your lessons. I love the Book of Mormon and hate to put it down.....you have taught me so much!

Oh, Brother Halverson, thank you for this spiritually delicious feast. I salivated with each verse, quote from modern-day prophets and your personal experience. I greatly appreciate the YEARS of preparation and your willingness to share. I love the analogy of approaching this lesson with high definition or regular vision. I most definitely saw these chapters in HD and feel my time with you and the scripture helped me have a spiritual HD experience today. I live down here in Houston and my ward has entered into the phase one of the reopening of our congregations. We had one speaker, a brother whom I deeply admire and love. As he spoke I saw an aura of beautiful light radiating from him. I feel as if I saw his countenance in HD. What's even more amazing is my 18-year-old son witnessed the same thing. This brother has ministered to my son in the young men's program for the last three years. Oh, how I pray that I can have more HD spiritual experiences. I look forward to partaking of additional spiritual feasts that you prepare.

Again THANK YOU!! You spend so much time on these lessons!! What an incredible blessing for us! But I must tell you, Alma 17:3 is the scripture that brought me back to Church as a YSA and got me out on a mission... but Alma 12:24 - probably my favourite scripture of all favourites - it’s what has KEPT me in the Church - that word Probation 😂 - when I read it, it was like a light turned on and I could see the whole purpose of our existence laid out in front of me. When I get discouraged, tired whatever, this scripture comes to my mind time and time again and soothes me. Thank you Brother Halverston for the HOURS you spend teaching us!! 💖

The term “probation” is a matter of perspective. Having worked as a legal secretary for a number of years and now working as a clerk in the Juvenile Court, I have seen where probation can be seen in another light. To the defendant, probation may seem from their perspective as something negative and tedious with “big brother” watching to catch them in a mistake. However, if you look at probation as opposed to going to jail or to prison, it is a pretty good option. Almost always there are terms of probation that include completing treatment programs with the goal of helping the individual to be able to live a better life after probation is over and to learn how to deal with issues that have been the cause of putting them in front of a judge in the first place. I have seen, especially in Juvenile Court, that terms of probation are there to teach the individual life skills, encouragement to complete their high school education, and put them on a course to become productive citizens. If we look at probation in this way, I think Alma’s use of “probation” together with “prepare” is a good way to see what our life is about.

Brother Jared, I have an observation and a question. Feel free to comment si tiene las ganas. As I read through chapters 12 and 13, I'm fascinated that Alma appears to be talking to the people about things they already knew ("cast your minds forward to the time..."), but the events Alma described don't seem to be taught in the Old Testament record we have pre-Lehi. In the context of Alma 12 and Adam and Eve, when did God "give unto them commandments after having made known unto them the plan of salvation"? I feel like Moses 5 in the Pearl of Great Price describes the events referred to in Alma 12:32. It's amazing to me how different scriptures revealed at different times intertwine in these chapters. And you touched on it briefly, but do you believe the term "God did call on men, in the name of his Son..." to mean "God revealed his will through Christ?" If so, this seems to be a different meaning than we use when we profess to speak in the name of Christ. Ours, or at least mine is a prayer - I hope I have said or done what Christ would have said or done. But Heavenly Father doesn't hope his words are Christ's. So does the term just mean different things in different contexts, or is there further truth here I haven't grasped yet. There may be a simple answer to the question of what this phrase means "God did call on men, in the name of his Son...", but it's resonating with me at the moment. If you have any additional thoughts and the time to share them, I'd love to hear them.
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great points, Adam! I agree that Moses 5 is the best place to see the explanation of the Plan from the very beginning, and you're right that the OT doesn't give us as clear a picture. Then again, there are so many "types and shadows" that it seems that truth was there, even if veiled in symbolism. I remember a conversation I had with one of my BYU religion professors when I was a student that went in a similar direction. What we ended up concluding is that in the OT, we see a lot of what they did, but not a lot of what they knew, while in the Book of Mormon, we see a lot of what they knew, but not a lot of what they did. That is, the OT shows them performing all the sacrifices that were meant to point them to Christ, but we're left wondering how much they understood, whereas in the BoM, we see how clearly they understood those rituals and sacrifices, but it doesn't say much about how involved they were in those things (we just assume that they were). As for your thought on God calling on men "in the name of his Son," that's an awesome realization--the difference between the way we usually use it and the way that God seems to be using it there. From what I understand, ever since the Fall, we have been cut off from God and Christ is our intermediary. So when we pray "in the name of the Son," it's not just what we hope Christ would say; it's also what we really want to say to our Father, but Christ serves as the go-between. God would work in a similar way, reaching us through His Son. So yes, I would say that it means that "God revealed his will through Christ." That fits well with the first few verses of the Book of Hebrews, I think. I think it was Joseph Fielding Smith who said that whenever "God" is mentioned in the OT, post-Fall at least, it's referring to Jesus Christ. The Father did those things through the Son. I hope that makes a little sense!

How do one repents? Seems a bit simple just to say the words “God forgive me.” Also, how can one not feel the fear of the doom and condemnation of the scriptures? I don’t like to associate the gospel with my childhood experiences with other religious because the teachings were plagued with an excess of fear, shame, guilt
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Great questions. Part of it is recognizing that the Lord is speaking to an entire spectrum of listeners--some of whom are best reached by "tough love" and others who need a gentle invitation. He tries them all (see D&C 43:24-25). Listen to whichever side of Him helps you feel the desire to change and come unto Him. As for learning how to repent, I would highly recommend Elder Neil L. Andersen's new book, "The Divine Gift of Forgiveness." You may also want to watch the video I did of King Benjamin's address (Mosiah 1-6), especially the one titled "The Goodness of God." I think it'll speak your language.

Hey Bro. Halverson. Been a lot of hullabaloo on social media regarding the church and the priesthood. I don't struggle with it, but do you have insights into the mind and will of the Lord there? Also I've seen a lot of people mentioning how it used to be written that the curse was a darkening of skin and premortal stuff and then it gets removed or disavowed if it was past prophets sharing their opinions. I would like help explaining that prophets can have opinions too and be wrong, but when they are acting as mouthpiece they are on point. Loving the videos.

I have a question concerning the monies. Why is so much time spent explaining the various currency and their values as commodity money (as opposed to fiat money)? Most people explain it by saying that Alma just wanted to show how valuable were six onties of silver. That does not seem very satisfying. Couldn't he have just said that six onties was of great worth? That is what he did in Alma 11:25. I have to believe that there is something more that we are intended to get from Alma 11:4-25. Any thoughts? Are these verses describing what was in Zeezrom's heart? Is this Amulek's report about what he saw in Zeezrom's heart? (Don't even thing about referring to Alma 12:9 ;-) )
@Unshaken
@Unshaken 4 года назад
Haha! Way to circumvent the Alma 12:9 temptation! :) It's a great question, but you're right--we don't need all the details since it's already explained in Alma 11:25 that they were of "great worth." In studying for the lesson I ran across this article that shed a little more light on the subject: latterdaysaintmag.com/senums-senines-and-barley-why-alma-11/ I'm sure there's a lot more out there where that came from!
