Product placement and the bbc is a touchy subject it seems, as I recently asked them about, the answers don’t really match up to the reality

I remember a couple of years ago noticing nearly all BBC presenters appearing in outside broadcasts during the winter months wearing Berghaus coats ( not cheap) with added BBC logos attached. I contacted the BBC to ask if these coats were funded by the licence fee and was told BBC staff have to pay for and provide their own coats. What a load of bull

This reminded me of when I saw ‘Castaway’ at the cinema and practically every shot for the first 30m had a FedEx parcel, van, logo or some other FedEx reference. It was so bad me and my pal were actually giggling.
@Phoenix2312
@Phoenix2312 8 месяцев назад
Yes, but FedEx did pay to have their brand in the movie... Or rather the studio paid FedEx... And they were credited! The BBC were actually why programmes on TV in the UK have to now have a P logo before any show that has a prominent product placement... EastEnders fans noticed that FORD CARS, MARLBORO Cigarettes with their at the time very distinctive packaging and COKE were becoming more and more prominent in the episodes - The BBC tried to argue it was simply "Set Dressing" but a Government Inquiry decided that it was far too often and the items stayed in shot FAR TOO LONG for it to be just set dressing! Another show that the BBC had which featured what could be seen as "Product Placement" long before all the laws were tightened... LIFE WITHOUT GEORGE - Carol Royale is eating dinner with someone and can be seen drinking what is very clearly a can of Coke... This was teh 1980's The rules were looser and there was also a legitimate reason. In the dinner scene, Royale and Her Guest are having a meal, Carol Royale is a Vegetarian, So that had to be accounted for to start with (In the script hey were both having a Steak...) and Carol Royale is also Tee-Total... So she would not be seen with Wine in her hand... Was it prominent? Yes... Sort of... But it was NOT the focus of the scene even though t was clearly visible, Under the current regulations - This would be allowed! Though it is skirting the line! Mainly as NO ONE has actually decided what makes a "Prominent Placement"... Yeah, The laws are a bit of a mess... Its like how when BLUE PETER used to air, they could not say SELLOTAPE as its a Brand Name... They had to say STICKY BACK PLASTIC... But even now, We dont say "Scotch Tape"... We all say "Pass the Sellotape" - It does not matter what Brand it is... We all say PASS THE SELLOTAPE! Just if you go to Australia, Dont ask for JIFFY... You wont get a Contraceptive if you do... (It's famous brand of Sellotape!)

In older sitcoms, all packaging with logos, etc had brown parcel tape covering the manufacturer's name. Sometimes it was so obvious what the product was. I suppose for the sake of 'realism' these days, they can get away with not covering up any brand name. In the example you showed, if Del Boy had said "I'll have some Kelloggs cornflakes for breakfast", then that would be clear breach of guidelines...

As I now reside in France (15 years+) I no longer watch UK TV. The way the French TV companies seem to handle "product placement" in live streams is to reverse the camera image so that shop names and logos for example are shown mirrored - not the correct way round. If the viewer wishes to "decode" the image - that is a matter for them, their choice entirely. I have no issue with that but, after all said and done, that's why I choose to live in a grown up country like France 😉

I was amused to see all the kitchen or dining room scenes featuring packets of food or cleaning products all with the product name blotted out with gummed tape. I no longer watch TV. However you need to preface correspondence with "N.B. THIS IS A SUBJECT ACCESS REQUEST". You need to use this exact wording before the "Dear xxx". Also it does need to be in capitals. Without it they can claim they did not realise it was a SAR.

The Sennheiser HD 480 (which from a casual glance they look a lot like in your clip) are EXCELLENT headphones. My personal favourites out of every pair of phones I've ever owned. There's my product endorsement. To go with the placement by the BBC. lol

@@englishciderlover7347 I agree, but the whole FOI system is corrupt, just like the government that created it.

There was a fair amount of Fjallraven outdoor clothing on show on Spring/Autumn/Winter watch, and I don't remember the logos being taped over.

Only Fools and Horses is one of if not the best T.V. program ever. Having said that and as I have been licence free for donkeys years I now find the best things to watch on a screen are vlogs like this highlighting the fact that we the public get shafted every which way from corporate, council and government institutions on an all too regular basis. Keep sticking it to them. The wool may still be pulled over most people's eyes. That's why it is so important you keep doing what you are doing. Every day more and more people get the opportunity to peek beyond the wool and get a glimpse of the bull🤬 for what it is.

Imagine they change it to the "media" licence and the goons ask if you own a phone at your door, everyone owns a phone, you could possibly watch bbc on it.....gets worse doesnt it!

I think it depends on how much of a backhander they are getting, bit like everything else they think they are so entitled they can make the rules up as they go a long. Try asking about how much money they spend on providing and international translation service to deliver news to other countries and where this money comes from

Ask them how much they make by selling programmes around the world that we paid to produce...do we get any dividends as share holders???

I don't think the rules were as strict back then and back handers were definitely more common place. Its great you're highlighting it though.
