It's been a long time in the making due to the crappy weather which unfortunately rears its ugly head in the video but here it finally is, our Cometa 400 and Ultra Short Carbine review!!
Despite the weather these two rifles performed exceptionally well and are in our opinion some of the best break barrels on the market today. Both rifles come with two stage adjustable triggers, cold hammer forged barrels and to top it all off... a lifetime warranty!!
For more information or for purchasing either of these rifles get in touch with us at www.bigdansairguns.co.uk. RFD transfers available!

Bought a fenix 400 from Dan on the basis of this video and 2 and a half hours with Dan trying out various guns. I suffer with arthritis so having an easy to cock, accurate gun with a light trigger was on the must have list. This gun ticks all the boxes and thanks to Dan for his patience with a newbie asking all sorts of daft questions. His help and advice was invaluable, now all I have to do is learn to shoot the damn thing, lol.

Thanks Mike! The reason it took so long to get the video out there was because the weather has been utter tripe. Wind, rain, wind and rain and even thunder. In the end I didn't want to keep you all waiting so long so I bit the bullet and whipped the camera out.

I purchased a couple of these through my local auction house the first a star carbine about ten years ago and the second a standard 400 about six years ago, I stripped them both, and the carbine once degreased deburred and polished shot like a dream, would not part with it for all the tea. I did replace the spring, it was a second hand gun and relubed. The second gun I removed a nasty looking piston weight and reassembled. As I was content with the carbine I sold it on. What has surprised me is that it has taken so long for this great gun to be recognized, A tuners dream surely, this FWB copy not expensive, well built,even if in need of a little finessing a real unsung hero.

Hi David! Absolutely spot on. These rifles are very nice to shoot straight out of the box but with some tinkering they absolutely shine. I love my Weihrauchs but my Fusion is every bit as accurate.

@@bigdansairguns83 I have been singing this guns praises for the last ten years, from Bisley to Newark, only to get looked at like I was short of a brain cell or two and got the usual reply " Oh yes a Spanish gun" In that derogatory fashion folk have. I would always reply " It's a better gun than you might imagine, give it a try" I think the big problem was the price point ASI pitched the gun at ten or so years ago, had they sold it at just over cost retail, the guns uptake would have been rapid and it would have found favour enough to push up the price. Added to that there was no publicity at least non that came my way. Perhaps they assumed the gun would sell it's self in a biased market place.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 Год назад
@@davidprocter3578 That's the exact same response I get until they try one. The other day I put my untuned Fusion through its paces unrested at 35 yards and managed two easy sub 5p groups... it doesn't get much better than that. The issue is that some brands have established themselves as the "ultimate" company/rifle and any competition is inferior as standard, sadly many shooters are now in that mindset. People tend to say that rifle XYZ will be more reliable even if the Cometa is as/more accurate despite the fact that Cometa offer lifetime warranties on all products (even if some dealers refuse to honour that). Given the choice I know which rifle I'd choose.

Beware on the power. I purchased my USC just before the second lockdown so did not get to use it for several months. When I finally got to use it I put a tin through it and sent it off for a service and relube. It came back with a note informing me it was running at 13.8 ft/lbs. I am led to understand most are built for 20ft/lbs. Mine now runs at 10.8ft/lbs and is sweet. As for the plastic trigger? Who cares? I don’t, it works fine apart from the first stage Great review, very fair and balanced. Keep up the good work.

Thanks David! The Cometa barrel so far from what I've seen myself and from what I've heard from customer feedback is superb (I tend to use customers as guinea pigs occasionally... don't tell them!). Hey Hendrick! It's good to be back mate. That Spitfire was doing laps around here and the sound was absolutely beautiful. The sound of freedom as we like to say. It's too bad that the lapel mics blocked out some of the sound. I used the .22 as we had both the 400 Fenix and the USC available in .22. That being said I do plan on reviewing the USC deluxe in .177 in the future. The Cometas are fantastic mate and if you liked these you'll love the Fusion.

I bought a Fenix 400 (.177) about 20 years ago, not used it a great deal but it gets regular spring/summer usage these days. My point is, this year I thought the rifle was playing up (jamming) but it transpires that the superdomes I always used, are not what they were. The last batch were simply too tight on the skirt, causing the jam, so I am now a JSB Exact convert. Hope that helps someone else on pellet choice.

Well done! I know springers supposedly aren't that noisy and rarely does anyone measure decibel level, but it would be a nice add to reviews. I own 2 USA Weihrauchs, the HW30 is quiet about 75 to 80 decibels, the 50 is louder about 80 to 85 decibels, but both I can shoot in my yard.

Hello Dan. Thankyou for another great review on the rifles I haven't heard of before as a newby, the two Cometa's, .22. The ultra short carbine caught my eye, as it looked fantastic and reminded me of my BSA Lightning XL SE. All my life, I always yearned for a good quality,spring, BSA air rifle. However, after not having it long, then being told they were rubbish by someone I classed as knowing what they were talking about, I got shut, losing £150. With great regret, as a novice, I thought if BSA could could make machine guns that fired bullets through the propeller blades of the Spitfire and Hurricane, making a great quality spring rifle should be a walk in the park. However, it doesn't seem so. As a young boy, I would have loved BSA to manufacture an air rifle that would have competed with the Weirhauch's. I don't think they did though, in my humble, novice opinion. The BSA R10's, to me, look gorgeous. However, I've heard they have problems with their regulators. This should not be, from a business that has so much history and expertise. The Weirhaurch's are around for years. They have no major problems and are bomb proof. I so wish BSA could do the same, it's so where they should be. I love the look and performance of the Cometa USC, and it performed great for you, even in the wind. It frustrates me, as much as it does you, why they have plastic on such an able, heavyweight, quality air rifle. I'd love to know your thoughts on what I've written. Thankyou for your time, Ian.

@@bigdansairguns83 Absolutely! Being a cheaper gun, I've never worried about getting it wet or dirty, so it's a real workhorse. That's not to say it's abused but it's no cabinet queen!

@@VortymLichbane Spot on and that's the type of rifle I like. No offense to the high powered laminate stock target rifles etc but I prefer rifles that you can actually put to work and not be frightened to death of marking it 24/7.

Hey Jeff! I 100% agree... imagine a lovely brass looking trigger on those guns with a metal trigger guard. They're still a nice little trigger regardless but it's missed potential for sure. This review still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I had no choice but to film it then due to my schedule but I might have to sneak them in another video somehow. Maybe a USC vs HW80K video could be good.. the new boy versus the legend.

Can you comment if you are available to chat with me on next weekend via StreamYard application (you can easily access by smart phone or PC with internet connection)? If yes, please mention exact date and start time you prefer. Live chat maybe about 60 minutes more or less. If next weekend is not OK, please let me know alternative back up schedule which is most preferable for you. Rgds t2

Hi Dan,or anyone else…..can you explain why at the top/front of the stock,for-end,there are 2 machined pockets that I can’t possibly think of a reason why they are there.🤔 This seems to be common on most of their range of rifles.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 Год назад
Hi bud! The small holes you see in the forestock are the screw holes to hold to stock into the action.
@adventurebeforedementia.2248
@@bigdansairguns83 Dan you seem to be misunderstanding me…..I’m not talking about the stock/barrel fixing holes on the side of the for-end but the machined pockets on the inside at the front of the for-end when viewed from above.They are not even symmetrical as one is deeper than the other.🤷🏼‍♂️

@@bigdansairguns83 Great I love them, I have two, one in .177 and a . 22 silencer version, in my opinion they are a very underated rifle, very accurate and fast lock time, some people hate them I don't understand why? Id like to see a in depth review like you do in your videos, great chanel by the way.

That would be excellent! The main issue you'd have though is getting the power up high enough especially if it's being used for hunting. Shorter barrels usually mean less air efficiency.

I do like these cometa 400's but I don't think they have the best barrels in the world the one I had was super fussy and not up to the accuracy of say a remmy express/sabre and I've seen a few people say the same thing. When more expensive than a hw99s the accuracy shouldn't need to be questioned.
@bigdansairguns83
@bigdansairguns83 3 года назад
Hi Matthew! When did you have accuracy issues with the Cometas? I've admittedly not been trading with them long but each one has been incredibly accurate and not pellet fussy at all. I did hear from a buddy that a few years back they made a carbine that didn't group well but I'm wondering if they've changed something during the barrel making process. I'd happily put either of the Cometas against any HW springer. The only thing Cometa lack compared to HW's is the Rekord trigger which I still say is the best trigger on the market.

@@bigdansairguns83 it was a few years ago now to be fair bud, it wasn't a one off incident tho as when I researched it I found a lot of people had created threads on forums with the exact same issue, mine wasn't a carbine it was a cometa 400 galaxy, very nice to look at but would only produce 20mm groups at 30 yards and I tried a lot of pellets lol, my weihrauchs and Webley longbow at the time would produce single hole groups. The trigger tho was sweet after a polish and if I remember right I changed a spring for a lighter one which eliminated the creep. Also I had .177 not .22 as I like the girly cal lol.

My own 400 USC and has excellent accuracy and isn't pellet fussy at all. I have settled on H&N Spitzkugel jbut it shoots FTT, Hobby, Superdome and Meisterkugelen equally well. The Spitz are just that wee bit different to the norm. Its trigger did have a gritty feel which disappeared during the first tin of pellets. A tremendous air rifle all round

Bsa barrels ??

Hi Phil! Nope. Cometa make their own barrels. One of the easiest tells is that they don't have the "Hammer forged barrel" logo stamped into the barrels like BSA.

Hi Hendrick! Well we did re-visit the USC with our USC Lam video but once again the weather was a bit pants wasn't it? We may give it another look. Cometa scope rails are a bit short but they do have arrestor slots built in. To be fair I didn't have any issue with scope creep. Thanks Hendrick!

Weihrauch are cracking rifles but I think you're underestimating Cometa. They'll also give you a lifetime warranty which Weihrauch will not do themselves. That's a huge win for Cometa.
