He's emphasising that these people are the most difficult to do it with... but think about it. The ones who were trying to trick him are the ones he gets to sit down each round :) another level of trickery, he's getting the most simple minded person up on stage to make it easier for himself! Nice one Derren
You will put it in the hand that feels RIGHT and Leave the hand threre is LEFT empty.. absolutely brilliant, and jet its in the other hand... Brilliantly done:D
Has anyone noticed that nearly each time he moves her arms to see how willing she is to move. Maybe the coin arm is less willing to move than the empty arm?!?! Clever little devil that Derren! :-)
Or much more simply than a magnetic coin and watch gag, by tugging her about by both wrists separately, he may feel a subtle resistance from her being disinclined to yield as readily with the hand that has the coin in, as she's working so hard to keep it secret.
Did this with my family... It was easy the first couple times (and of course it´s easier with someone you know well), but after that it was pretty much like guessing. When a person gets used to doing this and starts to look for what I´m looking for it´s more difficult. To do it four times with the same woman is amazing!
Everything he does and says he does it for a reason. even if it don't seem like it, such as "touch my goatee" you think its a joke but he is just watching what hand she uses.
He doesn't need a stooge to make a person think, and feel, that he is slowing his heart beat. Simple things like squeezing a tennis ball under the armpit can make the pulse in your wrist slow, or maybe he can turn his wrist to stop her feeling it. Agree with you 100% on the fake glass though. You can't stop yourself bleeding.
god. a super clever, super simple, incredibly entertaining performance. and then the host comes on and does just such a bad joke. makes derren look even better.
When he moves her arms apart before each prediction he can feel (at the wrist) as she involuntarily clenches her fist for fear of dropping the coin. Probably. Muscle reading has featured throughout the history of magic and Derren Brown is a self-confessed exponent.
I think the real genius of Derren Brown is how he takes a trick like this that anyone can do, which is simply this: The person always turns their nose slightly towards the hand with the coin. And deliver it in such a way that he gets people so desperate to believe in NLP and all that subconcious nonsense that they will have long arguments about all sorts of complex possibilities that are simply BS. He tells an awesome story illustrating this in one of his books.
As far as the trick you're referring to is concerned, he does not have the ABILITY to consciously slow his heart rate, but he emulates the EFFECT, that is his trade. Just like this trick. The effect is that he uses psychological means to find the coin, whilst the mechanism is much more subtle. No need for stooges.
Agreed. He touches her arms before each guess. Sometimes as a correction: "Facing down, this side here." ... "Just towards the front like that."... "Ok, let's bring you over to this side so they can see you."
The clever part is that he didn't make it subtle at all. It made it obvious to second guess where she would go. When he really wants to influence her he touches her on the arm.
nlp is a huge field which came from studying 3of the world's best therapists to see what made them so successful (viginia satir, milton ericksson, and i forget who!). there is a huge amount to nlp. it includes (but is MUCH more than,) influencing skills, but really this is just one *application* of it (which sales people love). My training with ITS in London was entirely about being able to help people (and yourself) to change old patterns and be more resourceful in all situations. recommended.
He knows which hand the coin is in every time with a secret gimmick. Then builds the story around it pretending how he worked it out. I know because I also own the gimmick and method to the same illusion and can perform the same trick.
He always tells people that he is not psychic and uses psychology and misdirection. He misdirects with the first part proving how well he understands human nature. It has no relevance to the lady because anyone would react the way she does. He sets her up for the first hand with "touches" and nods. He can tell which hand it is in after that when he moves or touches her hands because when you try to move someone's hand who is hiding something it is stiffer. Watch when he touches her hands.
Everyone trying to guess HOW he does it, have you not tried listening to him? He explains how as he's going along... Its not a trick, it's body language and psychology...
@SadegoGG Brilliant point MsMonkeyFart. Added to this, there may be considerable (subconscious) IdeoMotor movement of the hand in which the coin is held? This could be an ultra-quick, repetitive left/right lateral eye movement; tiny muscular (though considerable if you are looking for this) tremour/twich of the appropriate hand. We each, for sure, are 'leaking' ideas, impressions, thoughts, feelings and state of mind all the time. People watching (non-intrusive of course) is fascinating!
this whole notion that he plants ideas in your head by saying certain words or whatever is just a misdirection, it makes you think the trick is more complex than it actually is when in reality its just another run of the mill magic trick.
After he says that she chooses her left hand. Also this is the only time she chooses this hand meaning she doesn't choose the same hand 4x in a row. Check it out at 6:10. =)
@SadegoGG Thanks for message SadegoGG. You are absolute correct...it is simply difficult to pin-down Derren's technique. But these movements to which I refer, are really tiny, and will only be noticed (through his trained eye) having asked the subject a number (or even in a specific manner) of times? Look at discussions on Ideo Motor movements in psychology/psychiatry applied books; even Derren, if I recall well, does discuss this in his Tricks Of The Mind. Best wishes. Ebs
Actually u can tell what fist is tighter with touch but takes a lot of practice like most things in life to PERFECT. And what makes it DETECTABLE is that the Fist with the Coin is TIGHTER which makes the Whole Arm STIFFER n with Sleight movements n proper TRAINING u can FEEL A DIFFERENCE.
@Thatsthebadger1 it's because the hand you have the coin in, it's more tense than the other; Derren glances at it and can tell which one it's in. he just talks to make it seem like it's OMG. :L Derren Brown is awesomee, hopefully seeing him in May (:
If Derren Brown told me personally that he was gay, I would never belive him... Actually, I wouldn't trust a word he said to me, but I would like him anyway. How is that friggin' possible?!
He moves the lady's hands everytime, except for the third time. The hand that is harder move conceals the coin, since the volunteer wants to guard the coin firmly. The rest of the act is just misdirection. The third time, he explains the trick :)
@WrittenEidolon Yeah, he's really funny. "Would you like to touch my goatee?" :P I also just saw his stage show Enigma. I think I spend one half of the show laughing and the other half looking amazed. He does know how to make people laugh :D
unless they're kids from some sort of phase of denial, and kept secret from all except pmcommando and other choice individuals, he most certainly does not have children
@Thatsthebadger1 asking her to touch his goatee and getting compliance is to gain authority which subconciously lets the subject (in this case the woman) know Derren is in control. You'll see many Hypnotists and mentalists/magicians do this at the start.
The woman only touched his goatee because she didn't want to be rude, that's unbelieveble... she obviously doesn't know how many people who'd had loved to be in her shoes!.. She is quite funny though
