Whilst watching this I tried relaxing then guessing the card - and I got it right! I can't watch Derren Brown again without feeling all weird!! Hehe :)
The interesting thing is the way Derren reacts to Lucas' responses. "Good, very good" etc. He's encouraging him. Positive re-inforcement will do two things: a) tell the sugestee that they are doing the right things and to continue the way they are going (i.e., continue being suggested), and b) re-inforce DB's position of authority. He knows something they don't.
They're not actually sleeping, they're relaxing and voluntarily playing a part, as they've already agreed to do. If you imagine yourself in their position, you'd see how it works.
This is an awesome combination of sleight of hand and suggestion. It doesnt matter what 3 cards he picks, Derren has 3 ready to swap out, he then uses suggestion before each number to get him to pick the numbers he wants him to. If this sounds hard to believe, watch some of his other videos where he uses suggestion
nah. they filmed it twice. i suspect that matt lucas was genuinely baffled (i think he later became intrigued and wanted to work for derren brown to learn more secrets). so this suggests that derren hypnotized him, and during the hypnosis, he planted the suggestions, then unhypnotized him. and we see the edited version in which those two scenes seem like it all happened in one scene
He puts his game partner into a state of trance making him very suggestible. The handshake break has been introduced by a famous psychiatrist as an important element in an unconventional approach to psychotherapy through hypnosis. But Derren's game here isn't pure psychology. He also uses plain card tricks with a certain twist, making everything look like it's subliminal manipulation, while that's not entirely true. Actually, he always says he uses a blend of misdirection techniques.
Anyone caught what Derren said before the handshake induction after Matt said,"Hello Derren Brown". I think its got something to do to make his induction a fast one.
Funniest thing though is after DB says "these cards are coming right out the top of your head as I'm talking to you now". Lucas responds with: "Yeah, from Jesus or something." Of course, the cards are coming from Derren, so he's right to chuckle.
another thing is we do not what conversation of preperation takes place in these kinds of settings. And its a show anyways if it fails they just dont air it.
"What madness is this?!" SPARTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! Lul. But it took me quite a few tries to figure out the tricks in this; Like when Derren gives and wants his keys back, I thought that was really weird first time around.
Some ideas: Yes, there's definitely some sleight of hand at some point. He replaces Lucas' chosen cards with copies of the ones he has in his envelope and then uses suggestion to plant these cards in Lucas' mind. Why would he do the clever pattern-break 'hypnosis' trick at the start? To get Lucas in a more receptive and suggestible state. It also asserts DB's position of assumed authority.
Alrightit works like this: 1) matt takes three cards out and gives them to Derren. 2) Derren is REALLY fast with his hands, and at the moment he wants matt to put the other cards aside, derren changes the cards with 3 cards he holds, which are from a similar deck, or even from the same, because it was hard to see is ALL 52 cards where there. 3) Now with these three cards Derren gives subliminal massages he tought of before he met matt, and matt falls for it.
Notice how unusually close Lucas gets to DB's 7H. An extraordinary coincidence? DB is warming him up, trying to work out the best way to use suggestion on him. He hides it in an anecdote. He also makes the concept of using some kind of 'psycic' intuition to guess the card seem more acceptable. We all know that's utter bollocks, and moreover it's unlikely that someone would be able to guess so closely without some kind of suggestion.
Using suggestive tecniques he can make Matt say the different cards, because Derren knew what they were. Still very impressive though, and I don't know how he did that bit at the end..
I always wish I could meet Derren Brown, but I just KNOW I would totally fail at whatever he tried on me. I can never get to sleep quickly at night (so the hypnotizing thing would never work,) and I'm an indecisive person so I'd be changing my answer all over the place. :P
When Derren was trying to get Matt to think of the Jack of hearts (3rd card), Matt joked that he was getting the messages "from Jesus." I think Derren laughs because Derren is an atheist and because he realized that he had already imprinted the letter J into Matt's mind.
I'm not sure either. I was playing along and also picked Jack of Diamonds, but replayed it and couldn't figure out the hint. right after a bar-mitzvah comment...
Of course it does matter how he does it, not only so that as pedestrians we can try to stop it from happening to us (most particularly at a malevolent level), but it matters simply because certain techniques are more respectable than others, if it was "mirrors" or "rigged" then that wouldn't be as respectable as suggestion etc.
Youu are not shown the pre show work. Matt is hypnotised to remeber the three cards. What you see here is not hypnotism but derren brown's "Showmanship". Watch the three cards closly as derren handles them. it's a simple switch and then a recall under hypnosis. The jack is slightly wrong to give you the convinver !!!!
I find it interesting that people all assume its all "psychological" or the like, but yet if this was performed by a "normal", "ordinary" magician, they would simple except it purely as a magic trick.
Look into my eyes...look into my eyes...the eyes the eyes...don't look around the eyes...look into my eyes...your under! In a minute you will name the 6 of clubs...the 4 of clubs...and the jack of diamonds.....you're back in the room.......now tell me matt....what are these cards?
As for the suggestion itself, I'm not sure how that's done. It isn't as crude as something hidden in DB's speech, there's something more subtle going on there.
The ending is inconsistent with the routine considering the guy randomly picked out the cards, this makes the effect a precognition effect where the rest of the routine is presented as a mentalism, otherwise its great.
does it matter how he does it? does it matter wheather it is hypno, suggestion, n.l.p, or simple slight of hand? NO! all that matters is that he does it, and that he is able to make it entertaining!
This one is, relatively, hard to believe. No doubts about Derren's skills as a psychologist, but in this case it's hidden where exactly he uses it. Could be both, he tries to make a show, or it's something beyond obvious mind tricks, we simply cannot understand, without certain knowledge base.
I think your right but I also thought the questions in which he asked him had maybe some relevence. He could have anchored those questions to each of those cards. Just a thought.
So what exactly does Derren do? Well, I would perhaps guess some kind of hand gestures and other non=verbal methods, but there are probably also methods he's using that aren't quite picked up by the camera. Who's to say the Lucas hadn't been previously suggested in some way, or perhaps there was indeed some clever film editing.
I didn't say "magic" and I didn't say "impressive" either. Apart from that, it was a generalisation about tricks like this, in reply to someone else. The important point is that respectable != impressive, I might be impressed by someones ability to lift a certain weight, to call it respectable is to miss the mark unless the reason I respect things is based on physical prowess.
I don't think he was using subliminal suggestions in this one. I think there's more to it than meets the eye, ear, brain or any other concious part of the body.
Very interesting.... I believe there are only clubs and diamonds in the deck and he suggests to Matt that all suits are there. Planting the suggestions, he draws the six in the air and then describes a multifaceted object: six of clubs. The 'four' I don't get though. The Jack he plants drawing a J with the keys on the table (resulting in Matt mentioning Jezus) and then mentioning that he's a Jew. The diamond he plants turning the cards in a diamond-form in front of matt. .....and much more there
this one IS weird, agreed. No, i really don't get... I did think of J of heart immediately after I had to think of a third card... As for the first 2, how did he make him think of them? interesting!
so i get the trick...this guy randomly choses 3 cards,derren switches them for 3 diffrent cards using sleight of hand,he then trys to get him to think of that 3 cards using suggestion.he kinda missed a bit on the jack of hearts. but later he shows this envelope where he had the 3 cards predicted and there is the jack of diamonds...so he knew he was not gonna be able to get him to think of the jack of hearts? lol thats even more impressive.
The probability that Derren would have known on forehand what cards Matt was going to pick is almost nonexistent. Eighter this is fake, or it really is true "magic", which Derren has declaired as impossible. Or perhaps he has done this session with 156000 other people or so. Could anyone explain this to me?
perfect handshake interrupt. i wish i was that good. however, why doesnt he just do what he does in the other videos. no hypnotic inductions, just creeepy NLP stuff?
I think when he asks if he's jewish and asks for a bar mitzvah, he guides his mind towards the jack. I THINK it is has something to do with the journey from boy to a man = the jack.... Just a theory
