Good Video. This also completely eliminated oil consumption & smokescreening on my 2002 AP1. Just to note as well, Rain H8R also offers the option to modify a brand new valve cover from Honda and ship it straight to your door. This is a great option because you get a freshly OEM powdercoated valve cover with zero down time to your car. This is what I did and I highly recommend it!

Switching from Mobile 1 to Castrol Edge helped with normal V-tec misting and blow by for me. But that is minor compared to what you are describing with high RPM's and high G turns. Driving like an old man made the problem go away. My red 2001 AP1 will be 20 years old soon. Still looks and runs great!

@@DIYGuysvideo Looking forward to it! Will probably follow your guide to do my own. Edit: just did a autox yesterday on 255 square Conti ECS 340 TW tires, and blew huge smokescreens on 2/3 runs. Everyone thought I blew my motor. Consumed 1/2 quart of oil in those runs, and had to stop after the third cause I was out of oil to fill it up with (only had a 1/2 quart bottle left). Newly installed catch can was about half full so in a way, I'm relieved I'm not burning oil in some other way. The forums have said you have to be pulling big Gs on the track to get the smoke screen, but even on street tires at a 50 second autox course it can definitely happen. This is now #1 on my priority list and I'll be recommending it to anyone who does any kind of performance driving, whether that be autox or track.

I too was meatball flagged for this issue. I sent my valve cover off the RAIN H8R and he did an amazing job with a very quick turnaround. He also offers options to red wrinkle powder coat your valve cover and get replacement seals and coil pack connectors. Highly recommended. Since I got it back, I have had zero issues with oil consumption or blowby.

I installed Rain H8r's modified AP1 valve cover on my car and also swapped to using the 2JZ-GTE inline PCV valve rather than the AP1 version. I have 0 oil consumption on track and on the street it's perfect. I have noticed MUCH less oil in my intake arm and manifold as well.

My solution was throwing a rod due to lack of oil and finding this video explaining why I burned so much oil in the mountains. The car literally took 4 quarts once I realized I didn't have oil but it was too late... engine was knocking and the oil light still wasn't on. Building sleeved bottom end as I type this.

Some people use a pcv from TSX. The TSX PCV has an extended straw reaching further into the valve cover - still leaving 1/2" of clearance to the internal casting.

I actually ended up using the K20 PCV which has a similar straw. I’m not sure if it will help alone but it could be interesting to test that.

@christopherpauley8174
@christopherpauley8174 4 года назад
There's also nothing wrong with doing both solutions, modding the VC and doing an OCC. Another note, there is no major drawback to putting both the pcv valve line and the breather hose to an open OCC setup like the Smuck one in the video. That stops any potential pull from the intake tract and turns the VC into an output only configuration. I don't know if this will cause any sensor or code issues on certain cars, but it's definitely not an issue if you've moved on to other engine management.
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 года назад
That is true. From what I’ve read there is little benefit to running catch cans on a naturally aspirated motor that supports fuel injection. It is much more helpful for direct injection motors. The drawback to running catch cans in an open system is that you will 100% smell it. I know because I drove that car in the video on track 😉

If you didnt remove the baffle completely (one reason why I havent completed the mod yet) how did you clean the shavings from the back side?
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 года назад
Mainly using powerful magnets to collect shavings while drilling and after. Also using a blind hole deburring tool. Followed by thorough flushing... No guarantees but seems to have worked well for a lot of people, we’ll see.
@bertthys9714
@bertthys9714 4 года назад
Do you recommend modding the valve cover just for oil consumption even if you don't track the car?
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 года назад
No. If you have oil consumption on the street you have other issues. Most likely just an AP1.
@GuidoScocozza
@GuidoScocozza 4 года назад
And why do AP1s still consume quite a bit during street use where no G forces are present ? Any ideas you could share ? My 2002 consumes 1l of oil in 2000km more or less and other AP1 owners tell me they have similar oil consumption. Keep up the vids, very useful 😉
@DIYGuysvideo
@DIYGuysvideo 4 года назад
Based on the research that I’ve done the issue lies in the manufacturing process used for the AP1 Honda S2000. The final engine honing process was different for AP1s vs AP2s. AP2s used a deck plate and AP1s didn’t. This basically leads to some warping in the cylinders which allows oil to get past the piston rings during normal driving. This is why AP2s just simply don’t burn oil during normal driving.
@GuidoScocozza
@GuidoScocozza 4 года назад
@@DIYGuysvideo so there's nothing to do to cure AP1 oil consumption... thanks for the reply
@DIYGuysvideo

If you have the valve cover modified professionally then no. If you modify it yourself there is some risk you introduce which I’ll go over in another video.

@DizzyEnano

@@Udancearoundme He wasn't pulling enough G's in the specific corner before so it wasn't happening. It largely happens in chicanes when the car is pulling hard G's turning right, then hard G left as you can see in the video @0:59. It forces the oil into the valve cover where it wasn't before then gets sucked up by the PCV and into the intake. It could also be from stickier tires allowing him to have more G's in corners as well. It doesn't happen on every track, just more consistently in a R/L chicane
@Udancearoundme
@Udancearoundme 4 года назад
@Cesar i agree with what your saying but I use to roll in a group of s2000s. 1 out of the 4 would smoke. We would follow each other on track and that one car became consistent on smoking. I’ve also chased down other s2000s that smoke while I did not .
