Sondheim's 'Company' excerpts done by what could've been the best cast EVER of this show, at least we have this. Sandy Duncan gives 'Another Hundred People' exactly what it needs, Bernadette Peters never sounded better than she does here doing 'Barcelona' with Richard Chamberlain, Carol Burnett kills 'Ladies Who Lunch' and I don't remember Mr. Chamberlain being such a good dancer as well as singer in this piece d'occasion version of 'Side by Side'. Enjoy! I remember when this first aired, a great holiday treat.
I'm having trouble recalling a review or book piece that had any trouble at all with the original cast. If you mean an all-star cast, fine, but this still isn't quite it.
Sandy Duncan was always joked about back then for her wholesome image, but she was a powerhouse. She's so at ease with that crazy difficult song. She's criminally underrated.
There have been a couple of complete versions of "Company" that have been shown on television, including the most recent (not counting the current shutdown-delayed) Broadway production and a staged concert with the New York Philharmonic, starring (respectively) Raúl Esparza and Neil Patrick Harris, one or both of which may be available from various online outlets, given a proper search...
@@jeffmackey2931 I'm guessing Prozac would do you some favors? This particular little medley is just how I picture ideal casting for a good movie of "Company" in the appropriate era, don't get your knickers in a twist over someone's opinion.
@@lawdawgzs I'm sure you mean 'I'm Still Here' which she does the best job with, in my opinion (Elaine Paige is no slouch either). 'Could I Leave You?' is performed by Lee Remick in that concert.
Bernadette SHINES here as an awkward, nervous April, but Carol sadly doesn’t quite do it for me. I also think I’ve seen her do this number a bit better before though. It just needs to have a little more subtext and comedy; this character to me is drunk, laughing at herself and everyone, making the whole audience happy, then shattering her glass on the floor, breaking the mood and revealing the very serious depression underneath. It’s all about extremes imo and in this version Carol plays it very languid and consistent instead.
I never heard Bernadette Peters singing well (FOR MY TASTE), people love her but I never liked the voice, but this Barcelona was BEAUTIFUL... But the star that day was Carol Bernett for sure
It's fun to see Carol doing something serious. There have been others who have done better in the role but Carol Burnett is always entertaining as far as I am concerned. But seems here like she cares too much to make this number work. It needs someone who truly sounds like they have given up. This song requires more apathy and distance. Carol inherently brings hope to her roles.
When Carol belts you know she is calling up all she has within to sell the moment. She made this version of "Ladies" unique. I can't /won't compare her to Stritch or others as she claimed "Ladies" on this night as her own! Love Sandy D, Bernadette P and Richard C even when he broke character. I must have missed the Ethel M and others part. Is there a full version of the show out there??
Richard Chamberlain did some musicals including The Sound of music with Laura Benanti among others. He was a candidate as Tony in The West Side Story movie and he would have been better than Richard Beymer because he would have sung his songs not being dubbed
Carol Burnett obviously loved The Ladies Who Lunch. She also sang it on her TV show and on Broadway in Putting it Together. But I was never sold. It was like she thought putting on a wig would be enough to become the character. Nothing shows from the inside.
I saw her do a fully staged version of Company in 1993... she really got into the character Joanne.. and she stopped the show with this number.. yep, this version is very TV.. but the lady can act.. she totally ripped into this number..
Carol Burnett is a great comic, but as a singer no. I find her voice unpleasant. She runied " Ladies" just like she did with I'm Still Here, the the Follies Concert
