These three Panasonics make great 4k video cameras but how good are they at taking photos? My previous test only looked at the video performance, so here’s a quick test comparing the photo quality of the Panasonic Fz82, Fz330 and the G7.
All of the examples in this video show jpegs straight from the camera. I also shot raw images but choose not to show these because the results are more dependent on the software and settings used to convert them. All of the cameras were set on standard profile and the same white balance.
The Fz82 and the Fz330 has the same sized 1/2.3”sensor but the FZ82 is 18Mpx whereas the FZ330 is 12Mpx. The G7 has a larger 4/3” sensor which is 16Mpx. All shots we taken on a tripod to minimise camera movement and one area focusing used to ensure that the cameras were focused on the same object. The test is split in to two with the first section shot in good sun light and the latter shot in dull low light. The aim was to see how well the bridge cameras coped with poorer light.
The findings were very similar to my earlier video test. The Fz82 had poor results, compared to the other two, when shooting wide-angle but good sharpness throughout the rest of the range. The G7 appeared to have the most accurate colour balance, with the Fz82 achieving similar results. The Fz330 was less accurate but it still had pleasing results that gave foliage a brighter, fresher appearance.
When viewing photos at full frame there was little to choose between these cameras, however if you plan to crop an image then the G7 has a much cleaner, more detailed image; as you will see in the enlargements. The last shots are a bit extreme but shows the difference in low light. Because the G7 is less affected by using a higher ISO it should allow you to shoot at faster shutter speeds which is particularly important if hand holding or freezing motion. The Fz330 also allows faster shutter speeds to be used with its ability to use f2.8 at all focal lengths. The Fz82 can use f2.8 at wide-angle but this reduces to f5.9 at maximum zoom. The Fz82 has a minimum ISO of 80 and the other two 100.
I appreciate that there are a lot of areas that I haven’t covered in this test and I expect a photographer would have approached this differently but I hope it will still be of interest.

Thanks for the lack of background music. It actually enables me to really concentrate on those pics. Some cameras comparison vids use house music which are very annoying.

For a smaller sensor ..the FZ300 with a combo of 12MP, bright/sharp f/2.8 lens and somewhat decent in-cam processing, along with all it's other features(4K, touch, etc..,) is a well positioned camera and delivers well here.

If you just ask me to choose under a blind test with names like camera A, B, and C. I will give you the asking that camera A produce the best result. Unless Camera B and C is significantly cheaper than Camera A, there is no doubt that I will buy camera A. Turn out that I am all wrong. Camera A is actually the FZ-82 which is the cheapest one on Amazon! Thank you very much for your testing.

Wish they had kept the FZ80 at 16MP and simply added the 4K, touch, etc.., just that bump from the FZ70s 16MP to 18MP really hurt it ..detail here isn't bad but noise and artifacts in pics certainly are. If noise could be cleaned up then it could be as good or even ever-so-slightly better than the 300.

Thanks for the channel, the videos are all fantastic. I was wondering if you could recommend one of these cameras (Fz82, Fz330 and Fz1000) for recording reptiles mainly; eventually, struggle with light. Thank you very much.

Hi Alejandro. If you plan to use a tripod and shoot in 4k then the FZ330 is easily the best choice. However, if you plan to hand hold the camera then ideally you will need to record in 1080 to get image stabilisation. Recording in 4k will disable the inbuilt stabilisation. 4k also needs a fast computer with lots of disc space to edit the 4k video. The fz1000 will give you the best image quality in 1080. It also has a larger sensor which would better in lowlight. However it a fairly large camera and lacks a touch screen LCD like the other two but has really good buttons to adjust everything. The Fz330 is a good all-rounder, is f2.8 at all focal lengths so is pretty good in low light. It is small and easy to handle. Like the FZ1000 it has a flip out adjustable screen which really helps when you cannot use the view finder and allows the camera to be used a ground level. The FZ82 will struggle more in low light, although it has the same sensor size as the fz330 this is being cropped to give it the longer focal lengths. In telephoto its minimum aperture is f5.9 whereas the FZ330 is f2.8 which will let in more light. All three cameras tend pick up some internal focusing and stabilisation noise when recording with the internal microphone. One tip worth mentioning is that to get close-ups with these cameras you have to get further away from the subject and use telephoto. So the further back you get the more you can zoom in! I hope the information is useful.

No. The G7 destroyed all of them. Look at the last photo which is the only one that puts them to the test. No comparison!

@@pmlonline Yeah price is the reason I'd go 330. I like the colours more for some reason. May not be accurate, I'm not sure but to my taste they seem good.
