This is one topic I have had requested more then any other. Stanley 45 vs Stanley 55. what can they do and what is the difference.
Both Stanley combination planes can potentially replace a lot of wooden planes in a traditional shop.

Pretty good James. I have 2 # 55s that I inherited and one rabbit plane Stanley. Surprisingly enough it has no model number or blade adjustment and more than likely uses non slotted angled blades. I also have a Stanley 71 router plane without a foot adjustment knob. I looked close to see if it broke off and been filed down but no signs. Foot has no slot so maybe it’s an earlier model. Make a video with those things in action!

I consider these planes to be almost a work of art. I'm considering on getting either a 45 or 55-maybe both-and bring back as much of their original beauty as I can. Been looking for these kind of planes locally (and also anywhere else in Canada) and they are both very hard to find and very expensive once you do find them. I can get new Veritas planes for about the same money, along with extra blades. That isn't to say these two planes are not worth it, but if you find any at a reasonable price grab them up! The funny thing is that if I go to the UK suddenly these things are dirt cheap, but the shipping costs really kill it (again making the new machines seem like a more reasonable option). I'll keep looking though, maybe I will find one in an garage or estate sale some day!

One thing you didn't mention was the special bases for the 45. There are 4 hollow and 4 round bases, 6,8,10, and 12, plus a special base and cutter for stair nosing, a number 5. I have a complete set of them and they work beautifully. I like them so much, I bought a second 45 so I could dedicate one to the special bases.

+Joe basementwoodworking Thanks man. If you keep your eye on ebay and are willing to bid you can get good deals regularly. if you want it to come with a full set of cutters it will bring the price to 75-100. but for a wile I just had 2 cutters and then bought a few more as I needed that cutter. usually for $3-$8 each. my first one I found at a garage sale for $20 with a 1/4" cutter. and about 3/4 of all the times I have used them that is what I used.

Just FYI - In Mar 2018 I paid $250 USD (eBay) for a usable #45 Type 8, complete with the cutters including a sash cutter as well as the slitter and secondary depth stop and the original box with maybe 30% of the labeling intact. The rosewood fence has a few nicks, but usable as is. There are a couple on now in that same price range.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
Yup that is about right for one with everything. But if you just get the body and one cutter they are a lot cheaper. Then you can buy cutters as needed or when you find a deal on a set. That is usually the router I suggest for the cash strapped woodworker.

@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 8 лет назад
+The 2 Car Garage Shop yup I use to have one of my 45s set with a 1/4" cutter for box grooves but I made a wooden plane to do that now. just like a shop with a dedicated router, but cheaper then any decent router. that would be cool to see a wall with a bunch of 45s hanging on it!
@doczoff5655
@doczoff5655 2 года назад
Yes, I have three 45s and five 50s (yeah that is too many 50s but the latest only cost £6... about eight bucks) and being able to switch between them during batch work is a huge timesaver. And don't underestimate the Stanley 50 combination plane, it is smaller and simpler then the 45 which makes it lighter and less tiring to use, and it's a staunch little work horse (it's powered by the same arms after all). The 50 is also a far easier 'first timer' restoration project than the 45. I'm very lucky that I did a mechanical engineering apprenticeship before CNC changed the industry, so I can buy and restore 'beyond all hope' eBay bargains. I don't have a 55 (they never go for bargain prices) but I'd guess my multi combo setup gives me more flexibility apart from mouldings where I switch to hollows and rounds. I'm also lucky that I'm a hobbyist so can afford the time to collect and restore a good range of vintage tools :)

Love the comparison video. @ 5:39 when you are talking about the 45° tilt on the fences the edit there interrupts your thought in mid-sentance. "you could use it to put a bead on a beam or a ..." I'm curious what other uses you were going to describe for this.
@WoodByWright

I'm not casting aspersions on the editing-I used to edit a lot of video back in the linear- / tape-editing days. :-) That opening looked so wide that I was curious if there were common uses other than timber framing. @WoodByWright

I would love to have a new combination plane, but I don't have the money right now for it. there are things that the there are things the 55 can do that the Veritas can not much like the 45 can not. most other brands older are just direct copies of the 45 and 55 so in that case, they function and come together the same way.

i have an inquiry about this plane! So often i like to come up with my own profiles on picture frames and so I'll draw on paper to spec. Cut it out and stencil on the butt end of the wood stock. Cut what i can off on table saw and then shape what incan with routers or hand scrapers. So The question i have with this plane is if it's possible to produce a profile by using the more generic knifes and start from one side of the piece and contine to adjust the depth and position and follow the line thats been drawn on tje but end? O would Then use hand scrapers and sand the mill marks to blend everything together. Thanks!

sure. it can do large moldings one piece at a time just move the fence over and run a new line.
@laxm8162
@laxm8162 Год назад
I only own a stanley 50 and I struggle to use it even though the tool is in pristine condition and with full set of blades and box. It is a slightly better version of some other 50s I think as it has rosewood handle and also a depth adjuster lever, which is better than hammer tap but probably not as good as the screw system in 45 and 55. I am hoping you provide a thorough review of 50 with demo on using it 😊.i am looking forward to it

Has anyone seen a video or write up on the compatibility of parts between the two? In my own case, I'm wondering if the 55's left fence could be used on a 45 - my left fence is missing its knob and rather than bother with finding/making one, I'd prefer the 55's fence with its lower profile handle. Also, my 45 type didn't yet have the micro-adjust on the fence.

In my experience combination planes make great plow planes but a good wooden molding plane works better for cutting shapes and don't require setup though it is nice to have a combination plane on hand if you don't have a molding plane in the size or shape you need. Here in the midwest hollow and round attachments for the 45 would probably cost you more than a good set of wooden hollows and rounds that you could just grab off the shelf and uses as necessary I do have a Stanley 46 and I have to say that the skewed cutter makes them the best planes for rabbets and grooves, especially cutting across the grain. They don't cut anything other than rabbets and grooves but they can't be beat at that job. Unfortunately Stanley 46 cutters are pricey and difficult to find. The Stanley 47 is just the 46 without a fence.

James, great video. I purpose a challenge for your subscribers only if you are willing to except doing this on your channel. Here is my idea. I will offer up a stanley number 45 complete in the original box for the winner of the challenge. The person has to build a custom toolbox, include pics of them building it and send the toolbox to you. The person has to be a subscriber to your channel. When the deadline hits, you do a line up and the members of your channel get to vote on the best toolbox. The winner will get the stanley 45 complete in original box. You can then use the toolboxes as give aways on the channel. It would be interesting to see how many wood workers step up to that plate for this challenge..

+John Burkitt Wow that sounds like a lot of fun. Shipping larger tool boxes may be difficult for some. but the prize might be worth it. let me think about that. I love the idea and I know the audience would!

$40-50?? You find one for that price and I will pay $100 to ya. Been looking on eBay and can't find one close to your condition (the 45) for under $150. Just to think they were probably under 10 bucks when they first hit the shelves!

ya ebay will scalp you for prices. they are worse than the antique stores. I most often find them at swap meats and at MWTCA meets. I usually see one or two a year pop up on craigs list. some people think they have gold, but most are reasonable. and I restored mine. you are not going to find one with cutters or in mint condition for that price.

I have nowhere's near the knowledge you have and thank you for your valuable info! Just started seriously getting involved with woodworking over the last year or so. It's an addiction that has no known cure! I've added some Millers Falls bit ratchets, draw knives, and a cool T Auger. Looking at various planes to start out with and no doubt I'm loving the 45.

$44-50 is honestly the fair price for one with the rust still on and no extra irons... but truth be told,don’t do that to yourself,the ten or so moulding/gents planes it “replaces” can be had ALL for $100ish,pre set and no adjusting every time. Also !,drop one and it’s fine...drop the 45 on a slab and it’s toast “pot metal body’s and arm guides”

It is telling that they are mostly offered in ‘pristine condition’ on ebay.

Where have you been looking on eBay. Lots of them come missing most of the parts and didn't rust bucket condition. Most of them that have passed through my shop that needed a ton of work to get up and running again.

$50 for either of them is impossible nowadays.

@WoodByWright 3 года назад
No. I just sold a 45 a couple days ago for $46. They still pop up occasionally on eBay around 50 bucks. You won't get them with all of the original pieces but you get enough to get going. Usually come with one fence a skate and one iron.

"Are they actually useful in a shop?" Sorry, the answer is no. I have a 45 I bought in a flea Market in 1979, used it maybe three times since then. They're a pain to setup, and difficult to use. They were meant to replace those narrow cove, ogee, and other odd edging and grooving wooden planes, and like all multifunction tools (ShopSmith anyone?) whatever they save you in initial cost you pay many times over in setup time and poor results. Other things, mainly routers have replaced those, good riddance. Now Compass planes; that's a different story.

Interesting. I use mine two to three times a week. Extreamly useful in my shop.
