Inherited a 45 from my grand dad. Bought a 55 over 30 years ago for $275. Ran many feet of chair rail/ wainscoting cap using the ogee iron with a bead you showed. Moulded the edge of a poplar plank, sawed it free, and plowed another. Starting at the far end and backing up will save you a lot of hiking for roughing it in.

But today, thanks to your video, everything fell into place. And how to use this or that blade is the second question.? Thanks again Jace. What would I do without you? :)

An amazing tool and what an amazing job they do, I instantly want one At some point in time someone has sat down at a drawing board and designed these. I think the generation of engineers my grandfather and father belonged to had amazing inventive minds. When you say "...with all the parts…" do you mean with a full selection of blades or do you mean just the plane without the blades? I also wonder just how many different hand planes the 55 really covers, especially when you take into consideration some blades can be set up at different widths and different angles. It must be at least close to the mooted 55. I notice a few comments are wishing happy birthday, may I also wish you very many happy returns. A fantastic video introducing it to us James, thank you.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
Thansk for the birthday wishes! this is really a jump off the old Plow plane. those are hundreds of years old. this just takes it a step further. the 55 honestly covers far more then 55 other planes. there are over 100 cutters that you could buy individually though each plane came with a different selection of cutters. so all the parts means something different for each year of plane they made. and there are a lot of other parts beyond the cutters and what I showed you in a full set.

Those 55s look wild. Also, if anyone wants a Combination Plane but think they're too expensive: Craftsman, Sargent, Record, and others also sold them. Some of these others don't command the premium price that Stanley tools have somehow developed.

Veritas also has a combination plane for $400. They also sell a full compliment of cutters like what you would find for the 55. And, knowing that people have the 45s and 55s, the cutters Veritas makes will also fit the 45s and 55s.

I have an old 45. It has no blade depth adjuster, you just tap it as you would with a wooden plane. Does anyone know if modern 45 cutters with the notch for the adjuster would fit this older model 45?

yes you can put the newer ones in the older planes. just not the other way with out cutting the knotch.
@MK-ye1wj

I have a 45 but don't have a 55 (YET). i was wondering, once you've adjusted the fence to allow you to cut at an angle, what procedure do you use and how difficult (time consuming) to repeatably square the fence back to 90 deg with the blade?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
no reason to check "square" your hand will naturally tip back and forth so the angle of the fence is more of a general reference.

Hi James can I ask you a question, here in Australia it is hard to date planes, it is what it is. My Stanley 55 looks like yours, the cam lock says July 9 1901 is there any way to accurately date a Stanley 55, it has stamped on body Stanley sweet heart logo. Maybe you know a little more than I. Cheers from Tasmania 👻 like your work.

Little off subject, but recently I had an instance where I needed to make a stopped groove halfway down a board. I tried to use my 45 and found that I could not make a stopped groove because the skates protrude farther than the blade. I would up making an adjustment to my project to accomodate, but is there a way to do this with a 45? The only thing I could think of would be to use a brace to make several holes in a row and then a chisel to cut our a mortise of sorts for the ends of the skates to fit into first before cutting the groove. Any better way?
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 5 лет назад
Right. The only way to make a stop through is to cut out a mortise at the end for the skate to fit into.

Router planes are better-suited for stopped grooves. The only thing you can use the #45 for in this instance is cutting a little bit of the groove up to the stop, and maybe a little near the midpoint, but that's really kind of limited. If you need it to be an old tool, you're looking for something like a Stanley #71. Personally, I find the Veritas router plane to be far superior due to its precise adjustment mechanisms and tolerances. In general, a router plane is incredibly useful for hand tool woodworkers.

I didn’t quite get/understand why the 45 won’t do a “round”?
@WoodByWright

Because the first thing in the iron to touch the wood is the bottom edge of the cutter. With no scate down there the blade just dives in rather then just taking a shaving.
@robinalexander5772
@robinalexander5772 3 года назад
A question James. If you brought a Stanley 55 combination plane with 50 blades that where untouched bar 3 and you think the 55 is from 1901 would you use them. A dilemma I have. History 119 years old steel. If my dating is right. Strange question I know but one wood worker to another. Cheers from Tasmania
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 3 года назад
It completely depends on you. For me I would definitely use it. The plane was meant to be used. However if the box is there and you even have the original screwdriver and everything looks in mint condition then I might look at actually selling all of that and then using the money to buy one that is not in quite as good condition to use and that has some money left over for other things. But that's just my personal taste. I'm not a tool collector. But I know if you went and talked to a tool collector they would tell you definitely do not use it. But then they don't use any of their tools.
