Thank you for the informative video! I really like Stamendous products but already have a Gelli Arts plate and am very happy with how it works - have considered getting or making ones in other sizes though. Looking forward to the homemade gelatin comparison!

What a welcome comparison of products. I like Danielle's comment below, and also the Stampendous post. I have the set of two smaller Stampendous plates, and this explains the results I'm getting. I'm adding this video to my favorite teacher playlist. And will purchase the larger gelli arts plate. Thanks again.

Thanks much for the info!! I, myself, went with the DIY version gelatin, glycerine, water & sugar. I leave it in the (perfect) 12x12 (microwaveable) plastic plate I made it in-covered with plastic wrap. Over a month, still in good shape! If it gets damaged I can just microwave it, melt it and let it solidify. Perfect. Also, any size you want! I'm going to make one of the cute smaller ones to "take on the go"! Again Jenny, I LOVE your channel!! One of my (two) favs!!!! My other is Lindsay W. the Frugal Crafter!

@Doreen Marchetti - the packing tape release technique is one that we have not successfully accomplished on the Creative Palette. Possibly the Gelli plate coating of mineral oil allows the paint to dry on the surface but be held above the surface of the plate. It's a neat technique. Just lightly misting your paints with rubbing alcohol (or hand sanitizer) and letting it set for a second or two will allow you to pull all the ink off the Creative Palette in many ghost prints.

Thank you! You saved me a lot of money with this video! Don't scrape or wash! Roll out a layer of fresh complimentary colored paint, place and massage your paper, then go do something for a few hours while it dries. Slowly remove the dried paper and watch all the pretty grungy layers come up with it. I learned that awesome tip from a Denise Lush video. 😊 I would love to see a side by side comparison of the gelli plate, gel press, and rollerball plates. So far I only own gelpress because it is cheapest, but I would like to see if the other brands are better.

I wish I had seen this video BEFORE I tried geli printing for the first time today with my Stampendous plate. I hate it. It has no bounce to it. Paint didn’t lift or stuck on the plate and tore peeling off. I regret buying it. I wish I hadn’t opened the package as I would have returned it. What a waste of money. What a disappointment.👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Honestly, I have all three: home-made gelatin plate ($12.00) The Gelli Plate ($60.00) and The Creative Palette by Stampendous(25.00). THE HOMEMADE GELATIN PLATE IS THE BEST!!! It blows the other two out of the water! The other two are not in the same LEAGUE as my homemade, cheap gelatin plate...I can't even really describe how much better it is, it's just incredible! Better at regular brayer painting, stencils, impressions, drips, better at anything you can imagine to throw at a gelatin plate. Now, I hear over n over people say the homemade gelatin plat isn't permanent, well, please don't tell my two year old gelatin plate that! I believe they ARE permanent: they're even BETTER THAN PERMANENT: THEY CAN BE REMELTED AND POURED AGAIN AND AGAIN!!! Say you get a knick in the gelatin, and you don't want that impression on your prints, just rip it apart into pieces and put into a microwave safe bowl, throw into the microwave for a bit until it melts (couple minutes) and you can pour it again into a any shape you desire. I remelted mine by leaving it on my heater by accident, lol. They're SO much cheaper than their overpriced, underperforming twins. I can't believe how ridiculous the prices on Gelli plate. The homemade gelatin plate is just so much more squishy than Gelli and Creative Pallet, and that allows it to give much better and sharp images thru stencils and so much less white spots where paint didn't adhere to paper. I made a gelatin plate first, THEN bought the Gelli and Creative Pallet, unfortunately! What a waste of $$money$$ those last two were! MY CRAFTY SISTERS and. BROTHERS: PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY AND MAKE YOUR OWN GELATIN PRINTING PLATE, CONTACT ME AND I WILL GIVE YOU THE RECIPE FOR A PERMANENT GELATIN PLATE YOU WILL LOVE. (It's super easy and cheap!)

Does the alcohol smell dissipate when it's "jello's"? or over time? I made some today I had to take out of my refrigerator because the smell of alcohol was so intense and set the containers with lids out in the garage. I made them at 11:30 a.m. checked one at 5:00 still hadn't set completely, going to leave in garage overnight (it's still very cold out my way) I sure hope the alcohol ink smell dissipates? I got the recipe from the Frugal Crafter.

Enjoyed the presentation. I have some people who insist they have something that is every bit as good as another product and people get suckered into buying them for the wrong purpose. Good to see a side by side comparison so you can tell if you really are purchasing what you want. Maybe a mono printing side by side would give the nod to the stampendous plate as that is what it was created for

Thanks so much for sharing this comparison. Our Creative Palette is not intended to be a gelatin printing plate. It is intended for monoprinting, but not for all the techniques that Gelli can do. It is made from the same material that flexographic printing plates use, with which almost all packaging and labeling in the world are printed. Our plate works for stencils using different tools, like a foam brayer. It is intended for easy portability (such as taking several of them to classes), lightweight durability, and the ability to store it in any position. It was also designed for a specific market at the request of some of our major customers. It's not intended to replace the Gelli plate in its market. The Gelli plate is manufactured and coated with mineral oil, the Creative Palette is not. You can achieve a wetter working surface, pulling many, many ghost prints with an extender. We are sorry you did not have success with this. Hopefully your viewers will get an opportunity to visit our RU-vid channel and see some of the things the Creative Palette does really well.
@crafttestdummies

Stampendous- thanks for weighing in. I'm not saying I didn't have success, as that is fairly subjective. I am just noting objectively that they have differences, and, for most crafters, they would look at these two products - and their price points- for doing the same type of thing (making mono prints.) I feel it was a fair comparison since I did a few different techniques side-by-side on each.

Even if the Stampendous product was shown differently than its intended use, it gave us consumers a good idea of what it will and will not do. Sometimes seeing a product in the package with similar product in the package just doesn't cut it. The demo helps make more informed purchasing decisions.

@StampendousInc 9 лет назад
mvass294evr very true!!! It's so much easier when you see it in use. There's a lot of info on the packaging of both products, but having videos to show the uses is so much more accessible for most people. That's why we make lots of them!

Stampendous: You said, "You can achieve a wetter working surface, pulling many, many ghost prints with an extender." Did you mean to say that it is possible to pull ghost prints from the *Stampendous* plate if you use an extender? If so, what extenders would you recommend? Glazing medium? Thanks! I have a Gelli Arts plate and love it, but am open to trying different printing plates.
@StampendousInc
@StampendousInc 9 лет назад
Pila426 Oh, Yes!! We started out using Liquitex Slow-Dri Blending Medium, and that worked really well, then we found out that spritzing with rubbing alcohol or adding some alcohol based hand sanitizer and brayering that into the paint allowed several prints. Then we just misted with water, and that works well, too. But now our absolute favorite is to just use the Radiant Neon ink refills from Imagine Crafts. They are gorgeous, pigment inks that flow on the Creative Palette beautifully, clean up from all tools with just a baby wipe, and allow for many, many ghost prints using almost all the ink off the palette. You can see our results here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MbGFN_G5ZDg.html

I was looking for a comparison video between Gelli Plate and Press Gel. I want one that I rinse under water. I have also been thinking about the possibility making one of silicon myself. The silicon you can buy in a hardware store. Comes in both clear and white.

I recommend to use glycerin ochsgall, hairgel, silicat lubricant or brand paint retarder with the thinner plate. That gives more play time with the plate, since the acrylic dries slower.
@DoreenMarchetti-creativemonkey
You may have been able to lift the dry paint from the thinner plate with packing tape or larger clear adhesive backed contact paper. I know packing tape works and looks great. There are videos on that technique. Enjoy

Boy, do I wish I had seen this video BEFORE I purchased the Stampendous plate. It's not only going back to the store, but the trust I once had in Stampendouns products has been seriously damaged. I'm currently visiting friends out of town and raved about the Gelli plates I have at home in several different sizes. I also have a plate produced by Joggles that, while thinner, also performs well for pulling multiple prints and utilizing almost all of the paint applied to the plate. So, here I am in a town that only carries the Stampendous plate. I bought it and hoped to introduce my friend to the joys of monoprinting. I was horribly disappointed after trying several different kinds of paint, from craft paint to Golden acrylics. NOTHING WORKS. The paint stuck to the surface of the plate, with more remaining than transferring to the paper mo matter what paper or extenders I used. We tried printer paper, watercolor paper, cotton paper, bristol, even baking parchment and tissue paper - not a single acceptable print, and most of that very expensive paint was left on the plate. We tried water, alcohol, inks and various extenders to get it to release. No luck. We tried soaking the darned thing in hot water as suggested. (water so hot we couldn't put her hands in it) Nope. Nothing doing. Even considering that the Stampendous plate is not designed to work exactly as the Gelli plates do, I felt duped. It is certainly marketed the same way as the Gelli plates by the big box stores. This is not only going back to the store, but the trust I had in Stampendous products has been seriously damaged.

With all due respect... I have all of the Gel Press Monoprinting Press Plates and they are of excellent quality. They are easy to clean and you get a beautiful print everytime. I bought a Stampendous Creative Palette several years ago and it is aweful! It is sticky and paint sticks to the palette. When you apply your paint to the palette it does not stay wet and paint dries fast. When you place the paper on the palette to get a print and then you try to pull the paper off the palette it will tear because it sticks to the palette. It was very hard to clean and it took me over 20 minutes to do so. I would advise anyone who is thinking about purchasing the Stampendous Creative Palette to rethink their decision.

I made the homemade version, and I have a caveat to share, DONT add sugar, it makes it too sticky and the paint won't lay on the gelatin surface nicely. Mine has lasted months and months, but I live in a cold dry climate, that could be the reason. As for the comparison, I agree with the stampendous rep, each have their own uses, thanks for doing the video, it helps people to make an informed choice about where to spend their crafting dollars.

The packing tape technique does not work on the Creative Palette. We think that the mineral oil coating on the Gelli Plate allows the paint to dry but not stick to the plate making this neat technique possible.

Gel Press makes a very comparable plate to Gelli Plate that is significantly less expensive Gelli brand, but is nearly identical. One of the brands claim to be "vegan" (meaning not made from any animal sources), but I don't remember which. I have aslo seen now that Speedball makes a gelli plate. I purchased one and haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I have made my own out of the Know gelatin and glycerin recipe and that one works just as great, if not better than the commercial plates, but is substantially cheaper. Of course, it is not vegan though. I have purchased some of the larger commercial plates on Amazon at half the (ridiculous) retail prices I've seen elsewhere.

CraftTestDummies I have a round Gelli plate and a Creative Palette. I agree with the Stampendous rep that they both have their uses, and even though the Gelli plate is a little more versatile, I think the Creative Palette is a great option for crafters on a tight budget. If you use a coupon to buy it at Michaels, it's VERY affordable. A 12" x 14" Gelli plate (the size I want next) is very expensive, I know that's why I haven't purchased one yet. The Creative Palette is also a good way to get started in monoprinting without breaking the bank. Then if you really get hooked, you can invest in Gelli Plates without feeling guilty. Thanks for the comparison! Heather

CraftTestDummies I do think we should be much more cautious about inhaling the fumes which result from spraying alcohol. Some alcohols are more toxic than others. I wish I could just say which, but my guess is that the least toxic is drinking alcohol (ethanol) and that the most toxic are the various kinds of rubbing alcohols with or without solvents added (read the label). I will let you know if I ever find out.

You use the Gelli Plate to MAKE mono prints: "Monoprinting is a form of printmaking that has lines or images that can only be made once, unlike most printmaking, where there are multiple originals. There are many techniques of monoprinting. Examples of standard printmaking techniques which can be used to make monoprints include lithography, woodcut, and etching."

What is the price difference between Stampedous and Gelli Arts. People might take that into consideration.
@crafttestdummies
@crafttestdummies 9 лет назад
On Amazon.com, the difference between the two products of the same size was $7 USD- $28 for Gelli Arts vs $21 for Stampendous. It' sometimes hard to compare prices since they are priced differently depending on market AND whether or not one can use a coupon in a retail store. That's why I use Amazon as my benchmark.

While I understand that the Stampendous is not intended to do the same things as a Gelli Plate(as per the Stampendous Rep)the Gelli Plate does do everything the Stampendous plate does + more, + a bit better. Seems like if you have the extra money, the Gelli plate is the way to go....I have also made my own, which is easy and was a great way for me to test out if I enjoyed gelatin printing before spending money, but to me the convenience of the Gelli Plate is worth the $ if you use it more than once or twice a year. If $$ and convenience are factors the Stampendous would be the way to go. Also maybe a test between the two using the tools and techniques from the Stampendous site to see which performed better, my educated guess would be the Gelli Plate. I do love Stampendous products - the stamps and the especially all the Frantage glitters and micas, its a great company!
@crafttestdummies
@crafttestdummies 9 лет назад
Here's the thing- the Gelli Plate is only $8 more on Amazon, and if you need extra extender or products to make it work the same way, the price differential is negligible.

I bought my 8 X 10 Gelli plate when it first came out, then I made a jello plate...with gelatin & glycerine (that is a food/vitamin preservative). The homemade version is still in great shape, but it does NOT compare to the Gelli Arts plate. My main reason is the homemade version sucks up loads of paint, I do not get a crisp print, & the paint wants to stick to the brayer more than the plate. I just ordered the 12 X 14 Gelli Art Plate from Dick Blick, it cost $65.00 US. I received free shipping, and if I would not have wasted my money on the unflavored Gelatin/glycerine... I would've saved more. I can print my own fabric, it's a breeze to clean and store in the clam shell package it comes in. It is my opinion, you get what you pay for. For arts sake if you don't have the money to buy a Gelli Arts plate, make your own. Something is better than nothing.

The Stampendous plate and the Gelli plate should not be compared. They are two different monoprinting methods. The Stampendous plate is a hard printing method. These plates are originally intended to incising a design or sketch onto the plate as you would a lithograph. It is an easier, less expensive alternative to a metal lithograph. The Gelli plate is a soft printing method. Except for being incised, the two plates can do the same types of printing with very different outcomes. The other thing you cannot do with a Gelli plate is line or trace monoprinting. This is where you ink up the plate, lay down your printing paper and then gently place a sketch on top. Tracing the sketch you get a print on the other side. There are tips and tricks for using this method and definitely a learning curve. Having both plates in your toolbox is not a bad thing if you are really into monoprinting.
