DIY CHEAP Gelli Printing Tools & Student vs. Regular Gelli Plate
Today I will show you how to make some useful tools for your gelatin printmaking endeavors.
I got the double ended silicone spatulas at Dollar tree, the single ended "art spatulas" are $7-$20 retail, holy smokes! You can make them for a tiny fraction of the price!
You can also get the funky combs ina 1o pack for a dollar and the fun foam at the dollar store too!
Cut fun foam or cracker boxes with fancy edge scrapbook scissors to make texture combs too! *Thanks UK MaryAnne for that, check out her blog here, it is so good! scrappystickyinkymess.wordpre...
Use embossing folders and junk cardstock (Junk mail postcards work great!)to make impression plates for printmaking.
Foam "bath blocks" are great to making designs on the gelli plate and you can even heat up the blocks [with a heat gun] and press them on things to make custom stamps!
All the foam stamps you already have are great for this too!
Save waste paper from die cuts and punches for cool stencils.
Regular Gelli Arts plate vs. Student Gelli Arts plate
The regular Gelli Arts soft printing plate is much thicker and comes in more sizes.
The student gelli arts plate is 5"x5" and about half as thick as the regular version but using it is pretty much the same and you can use a coupon on them at ACmoore and I think you can order the student plates in bulk online. At ACmoore the retial for the student plate was $20 and I paid $8.50 after my coupon and teacher discount. Totally worth it.
You can always make your own too with unflavored gelatin to see if you like it before investing. I have recipes for a disposable and permanent plate below, the homemade ones are more fragile BUT you can chop it up and re-melt it if you need or want to.
Have fun and happy crafting!

Lindsay, a great diy tip for the fun foam ones, so that you can use one hand with them and they wont bend as easy, is to glue a popsicle stick to them to keep from them bending :)

I saw a RU-vid video where the thinner gelli plates can be used straight into an art journal book, rather than on paper. Easier to lay down and get to the edges. Love the video - great ideas with spatulas.

A frugal tip for you! You can turn a "temporary" gelatine plate into a permanent one by preventing the microbial growth that makes it liquify. We use gelatine in bacteriology laboratories for temporary slide mounts and back since the 1920s the same recipe has been used and I bet it would work for your plates too. All you need is some thymol - it is a benign chemical extracted from thyme (and smells of thyme!). When you have made your gelatine just add a couple of crystals of it and dissolve them and then let it set as normal. Easy! Where do you get it? Amazon or EBay. Or if you feel like an experiment, you could just make an infusion of thyme in hot water and add some of that to the gelatine and see if it does the same job...? Would be really cool to know if that works actually - I don't use such printing plates but i can't see why it would not work tbh. Hope that helps - if you plan to try it out please let me know so I can check for any further info for you.

+Rich Boden I made a permanent one using glycerin a few years ago and posted a tutorial. I was inspired after a cub scout trip where we turned milk into plastic at the university.
@RichBoden
@RichBoden 8 лет назад
+thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich Glycerine is more expensive than thymol ;) Tbh we use glycerine too (keeps it from cracking, same as paint), but thymol is the preservative of choice for preventing mould etc too.
@susanjerrell9220
@susanjerrell9220 4 года назад
I know this is an old post but I can think of another use for thymol. In your watercolors. Sometimes they mold even if you think you've let them dry out long enough before you close them up. I'm thinking even thymol in the water you use to rinse your brushes would be a good thing, right? I'm a retired medical lab tech so I know molds and fungi and bacteria. LOL Does a thyme infusion have any kind of color? Would it change the color of my paints? Thanks for responding if you do. Or Lindsay, of course, if you know, what do you think? Prevention is key!

What timing for this video! I'm just waiting for dh to get home from work so I can head to the $$$ store. I have a few homemade tools, but love that Betty Crocker spatula. Another tip on the embossing folders...use your extra acrylic packaging from the embossing folder packaging and emboss those for a more durable and reusable embossed pattern maker than can be washed off instead of thrown away. I also use that material to die cut and add little 'lift off' tabs on the back of one side, using packaging tape or masking tape...makes it easier to get the mask off the painted surface without marring the edge of your pattern. The brand name tools are so ridiculously expensive, so this is a truly great idea :)
@Caelidh
@Caelidh Год назад
I can't remember what the folders packaging looks like.. I take it is plastic?
@aptwalker2009
@aptwalker2009 Год назад
@@Caelidh The old ones used to be that clear acrylic sheeting, but now the newer 3D folders are so thick and firm on their own that they only use the paper and flimsy plastic bags. I get that plastic/acrylic packaging on stuff all the time. I just got a set of Uni-ball Signo pens that came in a clear plastic box, unfortunately with some writing on it but it's still useful. I also received a box several washi tape rolls that came in a clear plastic packaging like that. These days I save them for making decorative butterfly/insect/scientific slides that are all the rage these days. I studied entomology as a kid when I was in 4-H...geesh, is that even a thing anymore? So I guess this revival in interest in slides is right in time for my second childhood :)

I have spent the summer making gel prints, even took my 5x7 plate on holiday with me. I've tried new things, experimenting with shimmery inks & paint mixing on the plate. A great thing to make marks is shelf lining that has a texture (designed to keep plates from moving around on shelves, I think). I know about stencils, but never thought to use embossing folders! Thanks Lindsay for a great idea. The prints you made with the flower embossing folder were my favorites. Can't wait to try this out! ~Marilee

I love you! I am just starting out and still collecting things I can use for mixed media, especially texture and stencils. I bought that set of combs! Suggestion for the comb that is concave; you can cut off one or both ends of Q-Tips, slip them over the teeth, then tape them in place. It can give great versatility by changing how many teeth are used.

Scratch that - Gelli Plate (pro) is a plastic containing mineral oil, so their website says, which is what candle gel also is so guess one could make a candle gel plate to see if that works? Mineral oil and silicone oil are superficially similar in properties so my guess based on how it looked wasn't far off ;)
