There were seven "Comparison Tests" on Late Night and one on "Late Show." The first on Late Night featured Head Stagehand Tommy Casabona; the remaining segments featured Chris Elliott, with Gerard Mulligan assisting for two of them.
1. October 10, 1983: Tommy Casabona: margarine vs. butter
2. March 20, 1984: Chris Elliott: peanut vs. corn oil
3. April 26, 1984: Chris Elliott: packet vs. bottle ketchup
4. July 26, 1984: Chris Elliott: decaf brand #1 vs. #2
5. October 11, 1984: Chris Elliott: broiling vs. frying
6. July 14, 1989: Chris Elliott and Gerard Mulligan: satin finish vs. gloss
7. September 8, 1989: Chris Elliott: regular vs. improved dog food
8. January 31, 1996: Chris Elliott and Gerard Mulligan: beef fat vs. Olestra

*6:00** I'm gonna be honest and say I did this...back in the late 80's I was a dumb teenager and decided to eat several spoonfuls of instant coffee..and by several I mean about 8 or 10. About a half hour later my stomach was making weird gurgling sounds and I started to feel lightheaded..to make this story short I ended up sitting on the toilet with some serious muddbutt, anxiety was going crazy and then ended up puking later...never eat instant coffee by the spoonfuls..I was only 14 or 15 but I will never forget that horrible experience..I even remember it was during a cold October night.*

You have to wonder what Ken-L Ration company thought of that dog food comparison. And I remember the Olestra food oil substitute. I ate store-bought potato chips that used that, it was right there printed on the bag, advertising the new oil. Guess what I pooped out later? All the Olestra. My body never digested it, as designed. The best part was hearing Paul Schaffer peculiar laugh in the background. I remember on one show, there was some question as to which was better...sugar or the “pink stuff”. (There were commercials out at the time touting the delicious pink stuff). Paul was the tester, and had two bowls of breakfast cereal with milk. He poured sugar on the bowl of cereal and took a bite, and remarked that it was pretty good. He had some sugar substitute packets next to the second bowl, and Dave asked him to move onto bowl two. Paul then pulled a bottle of Pepsi-Bismol from under the counter and poured a bunch on the cereal and took a big bite. I don’t remember if he preferred one over the other, though.

No Dave, those are props". and the looks on the dogs' faces when he eats their food. I always remember that one. If you watch the tests with him closely though you can tell it's fake, otherwise he would have to get very sick. Especially the varnish, it's just honey and syrup, you would die eating varnish.
