American toads are not popular pets, but they are easy to find around the United States, along with many similar species around the world. They're pretty small, and very hardy animals that can survive many various climates. With that said, they're basically just food for a bunch of other animals, while eating pests at the same time. Keep in mind, they're essentially all wild caught and not captive bred, so keeping one may affect natural populations or not-so-great sellers.

Actually toads drink through their skin just like frogs. That's the reason why they soak. I have 3 toads at home asnd I've never seen them drink with their mouth. Also I think a sexuality spectrum because my %100 Female toad tries to mate with my other male and female toads. 😂. I know she's female because she dosent chirp and she dosent have a blue neck

Thanks for the toads vid! I've kept a pair of toads for 5 years now, raised since when I caught them as babies (I figured that I would impact the environment by taking babies instead of established adults, and maybe less chance of having acquired parasites.) One correction: toads DO absorb water through their skin for drinking (I don't think I've seen seen my toads drink through their mouths), but they only absorb it through a small patch of skin on their underside, opposed to other frogs that can absorb through their skin anywhere. Also, something important to mention is shedding: toads will shed their skin periodically and if you observe them doing it, it's REALLY gross: they get all slimy looking and peel and eat the dead skin off themselves. My toads really enjoy eating hornworms and nightcrawlers. Dubias are good too but they have a hard time catching them unless feeding outside the tank in a special container, which is why I like feeding crickets: the crickets can provide some enrichment while the toads hunt them down in their enclosure, but the crickets don't disappear as easily as the dubias. Toads are great pets: easy to care for, they have big personalities, and you can feed them all sorts of fun bugs.

The Eastern American Toad can be very long lived in captivity (over 30 years!) With good care you can keep these toads and their very close cousins the Fowler's toad for a long time. The only drawback is they are wrecking balls on 4 legs so enclosures require very sturdy setups designed with live plants set into pots that fit into close fitting repressions in the substrate and sturdy in nature or set above the enclosure floor (vining plants, mosses planted in vertical niches and on well elevated wood) Most of the horizontal floor being fiber mat or dry locked foam with soil/peat depressions are a very good idea. You can have a very attractive setup still but build it like a playroom for hyper 6 yr olds.

Toads are underrated, I plan to get a group of 3-4 toads this summer and give them an amazing enclosure. For some reason they are just very relaxing to watch for me. I also like how they'll burrow and then randomly appear covered in their substrate like they just woke up from a nap and get very visibly excited when there is food. and the way they'll twiddle their toes when they're about to jump/go after prey. I like the ones that chirp when they're scared too

Good care guide btw, for toad water, I'd definitely recommend dechlorinating. Many toad species have a patch of skin on their stomach that they use to absorb water. Idk if it's all species, but for frogs and toads I've always used aquarium or koi pond dechlorinator. You can also set a pitcher of water outside in the sun to dechlorinate it for free.

Correct Sky. They rely completely on skin absorption for hydration. They may occasionally swallow water when eating something they have grabbed in water but that is insidental. Also tho it may be splitting hairs it appears that at least one or more of the toads in the video are Bufo fowleri not Bufo americanus, although they are very closely related and can and do crossbreed in Nature

I had 4 american toads growing up and my mom found out they can be trained! You can train them to not pee on you and feed anything off a stick since they are food motivated enough.

Thank you for this! We live out in the country and every summer I find toads in the window well behind my house. If I don't pick them up and get them out I find their shriveled up bodies down there the next time I check, so I check for them often. I make terrarium with usually just springtails, rolly pollies, worms, etc. I was working on one of my terrariums and decided I wanted to put a toad in it. It's a moss terrarium with a oak sapling and a Conifer sapling in it, I set up a little bark puddle in the corner. Thanks again for the care guide!

We've recently acquired toads from the backyard. Stopped at 5 😂 There are still more, but I came here to check out toad care. I'm definitely keeping them now. Easy care for my kids, and they love watching them eat. I got flightless knats for the babies and got junebugs from the back porch for the adult.

I think the amount to feed adult toads will depend on their sex, part of their sexual dimorphism is that female toads often wind up much, much larger (up to like 2x as big) and in my experience they will need to eat more than an adult male will, also if you are cohabiting a pair of adults (male and female) and do not want them to breed, mildly lower temperatures and humidity will often be enough of a deterrent and prevent breeding (and in many cases croaking) as it stimulates winter weather.
@brittanylong4669
@brittanylong4669 3 года назад
This isn’t necessary at all. Toads cannot breed unless they’ve recently brumated (hibernated for a few weeks and coming up periodically for food and water) and don’t produce the necessary hormones to do so, even if they attempt amplexus. The males cannot fertilize the eggs and the females will absorb her eggs that she reproduces, like how mammals expel their eggs.

i have four american toads and ive had them for a couple months now and after coming across this video i noticed that i do take care of them in very similar ways. i am currently working on trying to breed them when i get the equipment. but my toads are very weird. they come out when they hear my voice and try their hardest just to sit by me and they became one of the best parts in my life.

As somebody who would only drink Fiji Water since tap and bottled waters were unpleasant I found it to be too expensive to drink a lot of it. Now they have Alkaline water with Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium in store brand and at the Dollar Tree so I can afford a dollar a day... and the Toads Jacuzzi(my friend said that and I thought it was funny.) gets filled with it. She seems to like it and will hang out in it "just chillin'" for hours during the day. She also comes out to look in the food bowl and if sees me will look at me and look in the bowl. Amazed at how intelligent these Amphibians are
