The trick to good filmmaking is definitely the hot "bink" stabilizer. In all seriousness though, your work shot with a camera setup under $1000 looks better than some of the stuff I've seen from people using setups upwards of 10x that cost. Proof that the person behind the camera and an understanding of the tools and their limitations is what truly matters.
I am using same camera for my videos but with collar mic. Lighting that I use is also little different. But I use kit lense which comes out of the box. And gotta say it works great for me But I am going for 10 to 18mm today. Hope it will bring some life in my videos. Thanks for such an amazing video like always.
The price points are different bc of payment rates (minimum wage is different) but honestly I've seen the shipping prices for people who live in Australia and Canada and that is EXPENSIVE
Man, love your positive attitude, expertise, and sharing the exact equipment you use. I'm a hobby musician, working with my family & band to record our live music, and other random stuff we do; so I'm learning a lot from you too!
I don't know how this guy isn't at 1m+ subscribers, the videos are so good. Informative, some comedy but not overdoing it, and great editing. Really appreciate the work
Wow after effects templates! That's more cool! This is what my dad needs, I'm so excited to tell my Dad to use this on my outside cover video! :) :D Thank you Sir Potato Jet! :)
I bought a couple of these K&F variable ND filters back in 2017 (I didn't know about step up/down rings at the time). I will say, that while the filters add some glare and tend to soften the subject, they are great for beginners. Eventually, you will want to upgrade to some pricier, yet, better filters down the road. Until then, these are a great investment, and when the time comes to upgrade, you can use these as backups, sell them, or give them to any aspiring RU-vidr or Photographer to help them grow their kit(s).
Like your channel, your personality makes me feel like we are friends. Looking forward to your 2019 content I have learned a lot from you in this past year. Best wishes and happy new year!
What he meant was that there are sharpER cameras like the Panasonic G7 which shoots in 4K. 200D is decently sharp but if you put it against the G7 you can clearly see the difference
Again and again and again, your videos perfectly capture the consumer experience. I don't know why it's so hard for other youtubers to really nail what the shopping and comparison experience is like for people who truly need to stay under a 1k budget. Kinda floats the question of what their background is and where they got their money to jumpstart their successful channels. Whereas your videos just drip with honest hard work. And therefore, experience.
This is my exact camera, lens, mic setup; different light, fluid head and ND filter, very similar though... Works great, using the roxant pro, kinda wish I went the glide cam route... great video and video set up.
i have been using the sl2 for about a year in a very similar set-up. it is extremely low profile and works well with non-professionals interviewees. thanks for the effort and sharing. thumbs up.
I got the SL2 with the idea of hoping I can make stories come out more, wait for it...."cinematic". Snapping a cine lens on it and I've been having fun creating. Also learning pre and post production. Great clip I'm 3 years late for.
I've left a few comments on previous vids that got alot of upvotes offering to let you borrow my Pansonic G7 setup. It would have been a great alternative selection compared to the 200D/SL2..... They are $500 new now, and on eBay they go for around $350. Would love to see you do some content on that like you've mentioned a few times (like best camera under $500). We're only 45 mins apart, let's do eet!
I was discouraged to get one because of the poor autofocus of Panasonic. How does it work for you? I agree it's a good camera, but I couldn't be happier than with my Canon SL2/200D.
@@MatiasBaldanza the autofocus with native lenses is alright. I'd use it all the time with my kit lens when I was out and about or at events. Against Canon dual AF autofocus, it's a weak point sure, but nowadays I use mine with a Viltrox EF-M2 speedbooster and sigma 18-35 lens and the quality is amazing and autofocus still works, but the speedbooster doesn't let continuous AF in video mode work, which is fine for me because for what I shoot, manual focus is best. Panasonic has definitely improved their autofocus in the newer Lumix G series entrants tho that's for sure.
@@CoalitionGaming Thank you for the info. I was quite eager to get the G7, but ultimately I chose Canon, because it would make for a simpler vlogging setup and continuous AF would make that easier for me.
It's my first time watching your videos and I have to say this one is amazing! For someone who's interested in videography but never had an opportunity to give it a shot, this kind of content is extremely valuable. I suppose there are many people like me who would focus so much on buying an expensive camera that we would forget that it's not only the camera that matters (and great camera doesn't make great videos by itself). I now have a completely different understanding of the whole problem and would try to make a kit that could actually help me learn the craft. Thank you so much!
Potato Jet, Potato Jet, A funny person who I haven't met yet, His videos are always humorous and great, But the notification always comes super laaaaate! I'd love to win a camera just this one time, For that is the true purpose, my good man, oooof thiiiiis rhyyyyme! (I've been watching too much Disney I think. I thought I fixed this problem already _sigh_ )
i got the 200d... but i didnt thought back then that the aps-c sensor will have an impact on all these fullframe lenses.. the 50mm is actually an effective 80mm f 2.8? not sure but getting even wider lenses is just soo expensive...
Hey I just wanted to say Thank You for this video! Seeing you talk about the basics under a budget and giving us a real life example of some B roll has inspired me to get passed the fear of not having the gear!
I've bought 2 G7's. One for myself and one for my dad who's just recently got into sport photography. It was my first ever camera and taught me so much about how to use a camera. I've moved on into the higher ranks with the sony fs cameras now but god damn, the G7 was an amazing camera to use. And while I don't have it anymore, my dad is still learning how to properly use his and he often calls me up telling me about a cool feature about the camera he didn't know of before (most recently the unlimited 4k recording hack haha). My sister's just started to get into photography and a little video now too so it looks like I'll be buying another one for her haha but she's a canon lover (spoiled by mum's 5D) so the SL2 is looking pretty good. I would highly recommend the G7 to anyone who wants a small and reliable camera to get them off the ground. Though nothing will ever get anyone off the ground as well as balloons tied to the chimney of a house...
My first ever camera of myself is also a G7!! Best camera ever for it's price! The footage it produced is really nice and crisp in 4k. Never regret buying it. Btw, how did you do the hack for unlimited recording?
@@jackychung819 Since I bought them in Australia, they're formatted as PAL. There's a way to switch it to NTSC which also allows the 4K (30p) to waive the 29:59 time limit. Here's a 5 min video on it ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WL37GkkMaRo.html
I really love this channel. I'm Brazilian and I don't know anything about speaking English and these subtitles you add to the videos help me a lot. "But how do subtitles help you if you don't understand English?" Thanks to the instant translator that YT has for subtitles. Hugs from Brazil!
I could use the equipment, haven't had a camera in over a year, me and mom got evicted and I sold my cam and laptop to help her with some finances. I've moved into my dad's but pay half the bills. It's rough and I miss photography so much
Hold up. Wait a minute.... So you're telling me I too can make epic dresser sanding edits with this? By far the best video I've seen about free dressers being restored. And also the best video regarding a budget camera setup.
I found this video super enlightening. This might just be all the elements of my first video setup! Can start saving up now and be up and running before the end of the year.... thanks!
Hey Potato! So, I'm wondering.. I'm not that great at video editing, but I saw you recorded at 60fps and your slowdown looked amazing! How do you edit your slow mo? I use Adobe Premiere and I just go to speed and duration and lower it by like 50% but that doesn't seem to create the effect that you were getting.
Those k&f concept ND filters are super underrated. I bought a $135 ND filter from simmod and the K&F held up almost as good (I say almost because I didn't test the amount of detail they let in) but it doesn't shift color from what I could tell, sharpness was equal, and I don't really get any IR pollution with it somehow even though it lets in IR light from my remote. The tiffen is terrible with IR, but again most cameras have built in IR cuts on the sensor anyways. Idk but I'm going to test the k&f a lot more. I think everyone just thinks that it's super cheap so therefore it must be terrible but it holds up pretty well from what I can see.
You really should have gone with a Panasonic G7 setup; at $500 for a body with a sharp 14-42mm stabilized kit lens it's a much better value, plus the Panasonic 25mm and 45-150mm lenses are stabilized and super good. Panasonic picture profiles have the ability to basically disable the noise reduction which retails a lot more fine detail. That Yongnuo 50mm is an 85mm equivalent on that Canon body which provides a telephoto-sized field of view, so you have to get far away from the subject to shoot anything more than a close-up. (I have the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II and self-shooting with it wide open can be rather frustrating.) The 24mm pancake lens was a great choice though; I have it and it's amazing, but the auto-focus on it sucks. Of course, auto-focus in general sucks unless you have a real camcorder or fairly expensive equipment. The Magnus tripods are great; I have a VT-350 and it extends 7 feet in the air, easily getting over the heads of audiences (a major problem when shooting events.) By the way, feel free to make me the winner of the Canon setup from the video. I love my MFT but don't think for a second that I won't use that Canon like there's no tomorrow.
Blah blah blah bad af, 4k looks like oversharpened 1080p, that tiny sensor with that 2times crop lets u not get a wide view and with the native 8-...mm it distorts the image way to much and that price tho..., not enough native *affordable* lenses. All cameras have their ups and down what works for u doesnt do for everyone else. Keep your opinion YOUR opinion and dont let it look like it will be the same for everyone.
@@LevinBe Except my "opinion" is based on facts, so...not really an opinion at all. The G7 is an objectively better choice, particularly when the $1,000 limit is taken into account.
the downsides of G7 are the bad AF, and below average mic, the bad af are the most thing why many reviewer did not recommended G7, but if we never use AF, always using manual focus, then G7 is indeed a great choice for its price and performance for 4K
@@LevinBeComing from a G7 user - I personally wish I got the SL2/200d. It's way better for photography, has better colors (WHICH GRADE WAY BETTER), better slow motion (higher bitrate), and autofocus you can rely on (really helpful during gimbal shots). HOWEVER, BOTH OF THESE CAMERAS GET CRUSHED BY THE A6300 (That is if you can find one for a decent price) :)
hey man.. I've been thinking about getting into cameras and cinematic stuff. if I ever wanted to film myself for musical purposes. thanks for this video. it should help me narrow down what to buy. not sure if you already announced the winner but I wish I one this
Thanks, Potato Jet! I've been looking for a solid entry-level camera, and this camera will definitely go onto my short-list of cameras to investigate deeper. I thought 4K would be important, but honestly I'm not sure I'm at that point yet. So yeah! Great demonstration of what this amazing little shooter will do.
Wow! Amazing. Feels good to see big guys try and feel like a cheapo amateur again lol. I would love the 24mm, the SL2 or even the gimbal. Big love from Belgium, good luck everyone!
Thanks for the video! I've been using my M50 at church to record the services and the SL2 would be a donation to my church to continue to bless others with shooting and sharing videos! God bless!
I've been looking at your videos lately and honestly have to say this particular one has me wanting to try my hand at trying to get back into video production. I bought a T5i a few years ago and never actually used it the way I wanted to probably because I was a little intimated but now I think I'm going to give it another try with these exact lenses... Thanks 👍
Always wear breathing protection when sanding old wood! I got a lung infection from breathing in saw dust, coughed flem that taste like shit for a week!
*_Can you do a video on how to finesse a skit/film with a Canon T3i?_* Like ze settings you should use How to use said lenses What affordable filters work best? *_I dunno would help alot and just another idea :3_*
This is going to sound stupid, but this video is the biggest relief that it’s honestly about to make me cry. I’ve been hunting down for a REAL budget kit forever, because I’m trying to find ways to be able to make good content on a VERY tight budget. Every “budget kit setup” video i see has people using $1-2k cameras, which is not budget at all. I’m a very broke, very amateur wedding videographer, finding work right now is near impossible, and it’s so discouraging seeing people use “budget gear” that is completely out of my price range, that it honestly makes me want to just give up entirely. So finding this kit, which is nearly identical to mine, being used to make something that looks this nice, is unbelievably reassuring. Thank you so much, I’m in tears.
I think a good camera is going to be the hardest thing at that budget. You can get into a Lumix G7 at $300 used. But it's probably not coming with any glass. Looks like a Refurb Canon Rebel T6 could be an option at $350, which comes with a decent kit lens. Sticking to lower quality accessories, I'm sure you could make it work.
I definitely recommend anyone buying Canon gear, to go to the online store for refurbished gear. Great prices with a 1 year warranty. Incredible deals on the holidays.
RowlWool got my 80D refurbished with a kit lens from the canon website with the warranty for $800. I checked the shutter count and only had 198. It was a steal
Hey >;-) You should be a prof at a film school. You give great talks. I have learned a lot from you over the last 2 hours. So much great advice. Thank you for posting. I'm a dog walker/future film maker. See you on the big screen >;-)
Youst think of the endless possibletys with that setup. My current camera is my mum's point and shoot. If you wath my latest video. The only thing I can control on the camera is ISO and zoom. I do not film homeless dogs or cats but I'm a teenager ho saved the last year to afford a 200 usd drone.
Can you do a similar video but on a 4k set up $3000 or under, I am trying to get a decent 4k setup for the film group I am in "rouge worxs" but having problems deciding. I kinda like the Blackmagic but we currently use a cannon. PS i like the handheld light and will be getting one or two of those.
Been a Blackmagic guy for years now. Just got the Blackmagic Pocket 4K. Your decision should be based on your workflow. If you want smaller, easier to use files and easy battery options then go for GH5s or ARiii, etc. But if you want something that will give you the best RAW image possible and you can work around battery, storage and stabilization hurdles then You cannot beat the Pocket 4K.
I started almost the same gear: sl2, boya pvm1000, a cheap benro tripod, a glidecam s60 and the yongnuo 50mm 1.8 (and also the kit lens but up to 135mm). Then slowly i upgraded my gear with a sigma 17-50mm 2.8 (what gives me more light and little bit more sharpness), a Zoom H1N (because the SL2 creates a lot of hiss!) and....2 lights! (sth very important!): YN 160 III and a very cheap one (tolifo PT-12)...and a umbrella as a difussion. Im very happy with my gear. For my future probably ill get the WEEBILL S, sigma 18-35 1.8mm and other light (yn 360 III) with RGB or stronger (YN 600). After that, yes, i would change my camera to a fullframe.
For cinematic purposes, wouldn't you worry about the 30 minute limit on the canon camera? I do more long form stuff so that limit is one of my big worries as I'm shopping for a new setup.
