It may not actually be mind control, but having full ExpressLRS backpack function support built into your HDZero FPV goggles sure does make you feel like it! Today I am going to show you how to flash the proper firmware to the ESP32 chip built into your HDZero goggles, flash backpack firmware to your radio, get everything bound up, and use all of the built in functions. You may never have to send stick commands do your drone again!

Thank you so much!!! The ELRS backpack function is pretty darn cool, especially with the goggles since it means you will hardly have to touch them anymore. I can't wait to see what kind of awesome features the WiFi module adds as well when that finally comes out. I see a ton of HDZero live streaming straight from the goggles in the near future!

Hi bro, ide be typing this no remote while burning back nerves that are getting squished n feel like a hot nail punch gets hit randomly while 3rdly mowing the lawn as my 4th trelepathee/teveekenysis is coming into existance!!..hehe goood show alwways learnfull n amusing. now i know what my backpack was really made for ty!! i havent been on discord just getting over 8th injection this year and trying to get out of being a pincusion..hurry gogglles lmho...i probly will be missing somthing when they get here anyway,much love to u the fam n all on discord..cheers!!

The backpack feature is pretty darn handy. Sometimes I totally forget that people have to press buttons on their receivers for things since my radio always sets everything for me as soon as it connects to a quad and makes the VRX match whatever I have it set to. Hopefully those injections are helping!!

B-Ninja, another great topic explained well. I noticed black cups on your goggles for the horizontal SMA connectors, are they 3D printed? Just asking 'cause mine are painted white and I was looking for an .STL of them when I had wanted to do the SMA spacer mod/fix.

Thank you for checking it out!! My goggles are actually a loaner set from the pre-production run so the colors aren't exactly what the production ones came with. I do hear that some people have been making STLs of things though, and the whole goggle is available as an open source CAD file for anyone to mess with or pull out what they need. That whole spacer and lock for the SMAs is pretty darn important too because nothing sucks more than having one of the antenna mounts pull off a board!

Are the January 10, 2023 still the latest esp32 files? As of July 5, 2023, the ELRS Configurator will generate a single v1.3 firmware file for the HDZero Goggles VRX - which one should I load on my v2 goggles (and how?)? Thanks!

Hi, I know late to the party. Could you tell me if you have changed the dvr recording settings? Means I have backpack running for channel switch etc and now I'd want to set it up on arming like you showed in the Lua. By my intuition i then thought to remove automatic dvr recording because it's some sort of manual activity now to flip a switch but it didn't work. I'd just don't want to record the non armed feed before take off

Hey bacon got a off topic question. So I’m looking at pid tuning videos an I’m at a point where I’m stuck. What’s protocol does a happymodel 2.4ghz rx have an what rc smoothing do I need to use. Idk if you need this information but I’m running the runcam link wasp HD KIT. It’s also a 5in freestyle drone with 2207 1750kv motors an a custom made li-ion 6s battery.

Off topic questions are great! By happymodel 2.4ghz do you mean their ELRS receivers? If so, the protocol it uses is CRSF and you will need an ELRS module in your radio to get it bound up.

i have a TX16S with elrs built in but i use the ranger module am on 2.8.4 flying dutchman fw i cant get the internal elrs to work as wont show up in luar app do thy need there own luar script to work i want to fly my woops with internal and my quads with the ranger

hmmm, the lua script wont really care which module you have active so you should be good there :) I would double check that the model you have selected when flying the small bois has its RF settings set to have that internal module on rather than the external. The radio will only power up the one you have selected in the model you are running at the time, so it wouldn't be something with both modules trying to run at the same time either and the LUA would just connect to whichever one is set to active at the time.

How did you get your Ranger backpack WiFi to work? mine just says run and no hotspot turns on. I tried passthrough flashing and just doesnt connect to the ESP8285.

hmmmm, you might double check that the version of the LUA script you are running aligns with the version of ELRS you have flashed to the module.

I have multiple TX modules. Can they both be bound to the backpack in the goggles?

Unfortunately I don't think so :( since we don't currently have a way to set a binding phrase, swapping those around would require re-binding since it will have a different UID with each transmitter.

I followed your video carefully, unfortunately my result was not positive, I have two happymodel transmitter modules, Iron Men and the pro, both bought over a year ago, I haven't been able to upgrade the backpacks to either one, with none of the systems, I tried with USB and also with Wi-Fi but the latter does not turn on and therefore not seeing the Wi-Fi network I could not do it. do you have any suggestions. Thank you

hmmm, im not sure on the Iron man, but the Pro should have a second ESP32 in there for the backpack function for sure! When you are starting up the wifi for it, what menu options are you clicking in the LUA script on your radio?

I haven't gotten to try it in that use case as I had to return my goggles a couple of months ago :( but I do think that if you are using an analog module that is compatible with the goggle changing its channel, it should work.

I have a couple of TXs like that too :( Unfortunately it isn't universal since the extra backpack chip was optional and all of the first ones were based on a reference design without it. Good news is though, something like the HappyModel pro module are pretty cheap, do a full watt, and it has it!

I know this might ruin the dream but... Question: What would it be like if people had telekinesis? Answer: Humans adapt very quickly. In truth, within a very short period of time it would be trivial and expected. Anyone with out it would be considered deficient. And we would start dreaming of something else like teleportation or what ever. Imagining yourself describing cell phones, jets, cars, and the variety of foods we have access to, to a person from 300 years ago, or Lasik surgery to someone with vision problems. etc etc.

I cannot get video from my hd zero freestyle vtx. The rx and tx wires should only be for OSD correct? I should be getting video as long as vtx is powered up. When I scan for channel, nothing is found. I have carefully followed updating procedures, but I am getting nothing. Do I have a faulty vtx maybe? Any suggestions would help, thanks.

Well i sure do appreciate you being here while you were :) The HDZ stuff is just coming up a lot since they are making some new things, but I can say I am about to send the goggles back so that is going to slow wayyyy down. This week is about an FC and serious gyro issues, and next week is about a light weight build vs heavy ones with different kinds of freestyle. This past month has just been a lot of HD video link releases and products since so much of it came out and shipped right after Christmas, lol.

lolol, my bad! Today I will work on trying to turn it back on and put your toilet paper back where it was :p The backpack is a small little feature, but it sure does make life a little easier when you have a whole fleet that can do it! I don't remember the last time I had to go manually set a band and channel on my HDZero and analog rigs :)
