FPV gear is too expensive to toss in the dumpster every time you feel like rage quitting on it, so lets fix it instead! Today we will look at the basics of troubleshooting the ExpressLRS long range FPV control link system using it's built in blink codes. Time to turn that frown upside down because it isn't as hard as you might think!

I have been on elrs sence Christmas of 2021. I have found it to be great. The availability, size, and price just beats tbs crossfire. So moving through the upgrades to 3.x now for the last year and a half I find it has become even better. This was a great video. I hope this gets more people using and enjoying this open source gem. 🤘

The availability, size, and price are hands down the motivating factors for being on ELRS. I think the system is at a point with features that we can say it has plenty now, lol...I would love to see the flashing be more accessible to more people though! Really hoping to see the next major improvements to the system be in that a part of it :)

The only flashing i enjoy is at Mardi Gras. Where all it takes to get a flash is beer and beads... I don't see no beads on elrs neither! Sorry, i felt compelled.

I went ELRS for everything myself, makes life so much easier, as long as you are paying attention that is. Very pleased by how much it's progressed, it used to be way more of a guessing game before, trying to figure out which receiver I had so I could flash it correctly and such. I love the wifi/webpage it has now.

It has a come a long way, that is for sure! Now if we could just get some kind of wifi based auto flashing from the LUA and cross version binding....that would really go a long way for pilot accessibility.

@@BaconNinjaFPV Agreed, that would be a dream. The ELRS configurator actually picks up on the unit when it's in wifi mode now too which is pretty rad. I keep debating other protocols, but at the end of the day, so far, all my needs are being met. Next is that Radiomaster 2W unit because I just can't help myself... =D

I've switched to elrs from crossfire and I've loved it so much I sold all my crossfire equipment. I've had great luck with everything including spi receivers.

I've spent over a month trying to set up a crux35 and tx16s, and if im lucky, I might be able just to fly soon. I never would have thought it would be more difficult learning to flash and bind than actually flying the quad. Every tiny step has been a hassle.

Thanks bro this is brilliant. I like the way you broke it out by blinks. I have a dozen quads and crossfire, and now putting more on to ELRS 2.4. Didn't have any problems except solid light, no sticks. I put in many many receivers, but I could not figure what I did wrong. In the end, it was sbus. Normally, on a Vista I'd clip it, but this was air unit, and I was focused on new ELRS so much, I completely forgot to disconnect it. Once I disconnected it, and killed the Uart, all is good. Thanks for saying that, you put it back in my head, I looked and there it was. Damn it. Thanks.

Thanks for the note about F and D packet rates not being supported! That was the solution for 2 of my 3 whoops not binding, despite having corrected the uids.

I run the walnut mostly because I don't care if it breaks what's the issue? Only one I've had is if you don't put it in its correct orientation in the provided mount it won't turn off haha!!! My biggest complaint is rum time.

LOL rage quit... Its crazy I just put crossfire back in my quads this morning after 2 months on ELRS... Yesterday I had a receiver just die after a crash and a week ago I failsafed elrs 150hz at 250mw with perfect O3 video(lost quad). Elrs is better than FRsky, Spectrum etc.. but it doesn't replace crossfire for me. I'm singing "Reunited" to TBS right about now.

I feel the same way, I've also started moving my uart qwads back to CrossFire. The SPI ELRS 3 is HOT though, it blows away the FRSKY stuff.

I've never had one die, or even failsafe on me really. In the past 16 months with ELRS I have had one failsafe, but that was due to a damaged antenna that I didn't notice before takeoff. Crossfire is great though, and if it works for you then run the heck out of it! At the end of the day all that matters is that the quads work when you want them to work, they don't fall out of the sky, and you have fun using them :)

I totally agree man. If we could get a wifi flashing mode operated by the radio with some conformity to global targets across vendors and the firmware packed inside, oh man would that help some people out. I think we are at a point where the feature set doesn't need to grow past what it is (and in some cases is already enough to confuse a bunch of people....like all the different packet rates with letters now) but now it is time to make the system more accessible.

Been switching to elrs recently. Most of the time no issues. But a few times I'd end up pulling my limited amount of hair out. Model match is the main problem I've had. I'd flail around a bit until I got it working never knowing WTH just happened. Thanks bacon 👏🥓😎

Good info. Yeah a lot of flight controllers have the same UART on the DJI air unit (for the SBUS) JST connector and the diagram shows to connect your RX to the same UART. Which can cause issues by having the Dji and the elrs to the same one.

I really wish manufacturers would at least put some kind of note in there about not using both of them at the same time! I have seen that happen at least 10 times over the past couple of months, and I am sure it is happening a ton more that I never get to see.

I would get the message, “ not enough space… update failed.” when trying to update to v 3.x. I would have to flash to v2.5, then flash again to v 3.x and it would take. The RX’s were (are) HappyModel RX’s with version 2.0 on them mostly.

That is a great point!! I have helped a few people through that message in the past and sometimes, especially with the older HM TXs, you even had to take the transmitter apart to get at dip switches in there....a real pain. Hopefully we will stop seeing any new RXs come with a 2.x version on them, buuuuut they will likely be out there somewhere causing trouble in a flash, lol.

Great video thank you , Im watching this video because I have a receiver that is acting up for some reason I think it got damage I dont see no light on it before it used to work . I dont know why so im going to swap it with another .

hmmmm, no light on it at all is for sure not a good sign! I would swap it too, so you are on the right path. If for some reason another one doesn't work though, I would start looking into a power issue on the 5v rail of your FC...really hope it isn't that one.

Hey man, thanks for your videos, it is really helpful. I'm starting now in the hobby, this past week my Meteor65 pro 2022 and the Radiomaster Boxer arrived. I spent the whole weekend trying to Bind and I couldn't. I updated RX and the Radio to version 3.2.1, 3.2.0, 3.0.1 and 3.0.0. I also updated with and without passphrase and nothing worked. I also checked if I had match mode enabled, and both were off. I also try to put it in bind mode by turning it on and off 3 times and nothing, it just blinks. I have no idea what I do more!

hmmmmm, I would say it could be faulty hardware but since you were able to flash it that pretty much rules it out. Did you try enabling model match, backing out, then disabling it again?

Hello iam having a problem . I have a brand new Jumper t20s and a foxeer 2.4ghz lna reciever. I have follow the expresslrs guise for setting everething up. But at the bench test 25mw at 1 meter i get -100db on rssi1 TX. And i also get a critical alerta of low rx signal. If i move the radio like 0.5meters away it Will failsafe...any nidea about this?

Hi i know im about a year late to the party but I hope you this message and perhaps you can help me out but first let me say that this is a GREAT video as well as the one about flashing the firmware. so the issue that I am having is that all of a sudden I started to get a warning while flying saying "you RF signal is critical" and telemetry lost. this is happening around 100 meter distance. this was not happening at all.

I hope this helps me, I have 5 receivers and only 1 actually takes stick inputs, the other 4 connect (wired correctly and flashed) but sticks dont do anything despit all my radio and bf 4.4 changes ugh using a radiomaster boxer

I have yet to get another receiver to update, I did this once, added binding phrase, got it to connect all good. build 3 more drones get 1 connected binding not an issue, the other 2 not so good. I have been thru 5 different receivers and cant get any to work. when I try to update the firmware it always fails, and I cant remember what I put for binding phrase the first time I did this and it worked. very tired of seeing the big red failed box.

Hi Bacon, I have a new whoop built I think everything is ok, but when I connect to beta flight in receiver tab I do get a response from the radio stick but is very sluggish, it take a couple of seconds to respond, any idea what can I do thanks I did a new update to my BETAFPV F411 2-4S 20A Toothpick Brushless Flight Controller

hmmmmm, it could be a couple of things. Which UART to do you have you receiver connected to on that thing? If it is somehow connected to a softserial connection that would for sure do it, and it would get worse as the CPU loads down which may happen with newer versions of betaflight.

So, I have a solid on when I power up the flight controller, even when the transmitter is turned off. If I disconnect the receiver from the flight controller and plug it back in, then it does the blinky thing as one would expect on initial power up. If I have the transmitter on , then it connects like normal. problem is, this has been the same result from a couple different controllers. Any thoughts? UPDATE: This seems like a resource conflict issue. The receiver doesn't like to be connected to the UART when it powers up. If I power it up before connecting it to the UART, everything works normally, including connecting properly with the flight controller and working correctly there. Very frustrating at this point. Tried different firmware on the controller loads with all the same results.

to my knowledge all modern flight controller firmwares include support for the CRSF protocol which is what ExpressLRS runs between their receivers and the flight controller. As long as the FC has an available UART, an open 5V pad, and support for CRSF in the firmware flashed to it, then ELRS should be able to work with it just fine.

it sure can be, but man have I seen a lot of people run into random little issues getting it over the finish line. over the past few months I think I have helped trouble shoot at least 100 ELRS installations and boy were some of them strange problems, lol.

Why does BF have presets for ELRS Rx’s? What do they do and why would one need to apply them? They seem to contain the settings that are in the Lua for the Tx; packet rate, telem ratio, etc. Is it necessary to change Rx settings if you change your Tx settings in the Lua?

That is a great question! The presets correspond to the settings in the LUA and they set things like stick smoothing in Betaflight to match the packet rates you are using on the radio. You for sure want to make sure that you have set the correct preset for whatever packet rate and mode you are running in the LUA as it can really help the quad to fly much more smoothly than it would otherwise :) As far as being necessary to match changes when you change on the TX side, as long as you arent changing the packet rate there really isn't a need to. If you do change the packet rate though, running the preset for that one in BF is a very good idea afterward.

So I guess with ELRS BnF’s, one really needs to run a query in the cli to find out how the Rx has been configured as I don’t recall ever seeing anything about that in manuals or product web pages. This is def something that isn’t talked about or mentioned in any of the ELRS set-up vids I’ve seen.

@@modquad18 yeah it is a little neglected in that aspect! Usually with a BNF my advice would be to just flash the preset for whatever packet rate you are running and overwrite whatever they may have had in those smoothing fields to begin with. It really only adjusts the stick smoothing and some other things specific to how BF handles stick inputs, so matching it to your setup is always the best bet.

@@BaconNinjaFPV OK, so the Rx isn’t really having its config changed in any way, the presets are just modifying FC parameters. That’s mainly what I was unsure about, e,g, the Rx can handle any Tx packet rate or telemetry ratios without modification. Cool, thanks again 👍🏽

My radio master rp1 works great until I power down and then plug in again. It has solid light but there’s no signal to transmitter. I have to let it sit for 30min before powering it up and it works. Until I unplug the battery and try to plug another pack in. Solid light but no RSSI. I’m stumped

I wonder if the binding phrase should be more like a username than a password or vice versa? Also what's the abbreviation for BP?

They are more like your wifi password. the transmitter and receiver just have to match up so that everything can authenticate and connect up properly. Actually, the whole system is pretty darn close to exactly how wifi works, which is pretty awesome when you think about it! I think BP is a great abbreviation for binding phrase :)

@@BaconNinjaFPV By your description, I take it the BP is securely hashed. Where even a hashed copy is not transmitted as clear text? Meaning, even though BP treated like a wifi password, using a password(letters of mixed case, numbers and a symbol) would be overkill. Don't use your first pet's name as it's the answer your bank uses, but using your second pet's name or an old or ?current? email username(the part preceding the @) is fine?

@@BaconNinjaFPV It's funny talking about wifi passwords when BP is clearly something different because in WiFi the password is rarely used, if ever, without the SSID and it's clear E*LRS doesn't have network names and would be unable to do anything close to what WiFi does without an SSID? It seems they are not talking about the old WEP or the new WPA2 to me and that makes me wonder what about WiFi ppl are talking about?

It sounds like everything is working with the control link then, so great job at getting that done!! I think the issue you may be having is going to be more on the FC to VTX side since you can't get VTX admin in the LUA to change your band/channel. What kind of VTX are you using on that build? Usually it is an issue with smart audio or MSP VTX control if you are using an analog or HDZero transmitter.

Im bound solid green and blue. but i can't get it to talk to betaflight still. Im on rx 4 and tx 4. So my worst problem with elrs is being bound and not getting stick inputs.

well at least you know you are properly bound! Since your sticks wont work, there are a few things to look at. First make sure that the UART you have your receiver on has serial RX checked in the ports tab of Betaflight. If that is good, then make sure in the receiver tab you have the type set to serial and the protocol set to CRSF. If that checks out, double and triple check that you have the TX on the receiver going to the RX pad of the UART you have serial RX selected for. If you hapened to have left the "invert serial" check box on when you built the firmware for the reciever, those pads are going to be backwards (TX to TX and RX to RX) so double check that you didn't build it with that inversion checked. Also make sure that you arent using an SBUS pad since that has hardware inversion and will mess some stuff up. Same for the RX on the receiver going to the TX for the pad you have serial RX selected for. Lastly you can check the mixes tab in your radio for the model you have set up and make sure your sticks are in there properly. Outside of all those things, something realllllly wrong would be going on if all of that checks out. If you are still stuck, hit up the discord because we are always answering ELRS questions over there!

@@BaconNinjaFPV im using and sbus pad on uart 3. elrs is on uart 4 and thank you for your time and patients and yes all that checks off correctly. the only thing i can think of is I built the firmware a few times, i was able to delete it from my comp but bot sure if that matters now. I did wire them correctly i noticed the tx was before the rx so i asked around if they were supposed to be tx to rx as usual. I may have selected invetered because it says to for the tango 2. i also actually swapped them quickly and was able to still bind in betaflight by doing exactly that ivetering rx to rx and selecting tx just in betaflight to trouble shoot. before this video. It was generally easy every thing was succesfull on the tx side and i accidentally entered things the wifi way for the rx and thats when it bound and i was like well that was the luckiest accident ive ever had. I wonder if i have to run older firm ware because originally the happy model one had the firrmware built in. the tx is on 3.30 and the rx is on 3.01 . i dropped radiomaster in the tools and i think it back dated to the happy model build and the ranger stayed on the latest. but i have the right thing in the rx now its the radio master ep1. I tried just msp tx 1 and rx 4 and save and nothing

@@kennykobi hmmmm, if there is any way you can make it over to the Discord I bet we could get it worked out since a couple of pictures would be super helpful :) Do you have one wire from your ELRS on the SBUS pad of UART 3 and another wire on a pad for UART 4? It sounds like you have everything going great with the firmware side, so that is for sure the hardest part and you nailed that bit!

So a solid blinking light should be that the quad and radio aren't bound with each other yet, which would absolutely make sense for not getting any sticks in Betaflight. What kind of quad/receiver are you running and what is the transmitter you are using?

@@BaconNinjaFPV sorry I didn’t mean solid “blinking” I just meant solid. Idk why I worded it that way. But it’s the x9 lite with beta FPV 2.4 nano and the matching g beta FPV 2.4 nano rx. Weird thing is that it worked and I flew it a few times, then one day it just didn’t work anymore.

Most of it is in the wiki, that is for sure :) I have found that some people pick it up better in different formats though, so sometimes reading it doesn't help it click for some reason. Personally I just read a million things until it makes sense, but hopefully this one will help some of those visual/auditory learners!

I’m not trying to be a smarty pants or correct you, but they are thankfully now making built-in uart based ELRS receivers, that function just like external receivers. F$@k SPI based!!

I am sooooo glad they are starting to do more UART based AIO implementations! I didn't want to get too confusing though, so since the bulk of them are SPI I kinda went that route with it. I agree though, SPI implementations of it need to just go somewhere and never bee seen again, lol.

@@BaconNinjaFPV it’s the reason why I still have the first nano module on 1.0.1(stupid first gen SPI boards). The module had issues anyway so I gladly have an upgraded 1W nano now. That one only did maybe 250mw 👎🏼. I figured you would know, and it does make sense. No sense in confusing the super noobs anymore. Even as a seasoned pilot(though not the best lol) it still finds a way to irritate me. I still dig it though. I do still use Xfire for a lot of builds, but using more ELRS these days. I only recently found the channel but I’m really digging it. I watch most of your videos. Great work!

It can absolutely be a pain sometimes. I found it to work the way it should 95% of the time....but that other 5% can be realllllllly frustrating.

I hate ELRS. Convoluted update method. Crap range although many say it's super. Brand new Pavo 25 can't get across a football field without signal loss Warnings. Ripped it out and crossfire in. Problem solved.

The update method is....wellllll....yeah not super awesome compared to having the receiver update itself from the radio, that is for sure. The range you got though, I have never seen ELRS have bad range unless there was something goin on with the antenna or the radio config was set up weird. At the end of the day though, if Crossfire does it for you then it is a great system to be on!

It's not ELRS, it's BetaFPV. BetaFPV - not even once. I have a friend with LiteRadio 3 and he's getting more failsafes than I got in my Frsky flying days. 100mW+internal antenna+suboptimal rx antenna orientation = disaster.

it can be sometimes. I haven't personally had an issue with it on just under 90 different quads bound to my radio, but over the past few months of helping troubleshoot a bajillion installations of ELRS I have seen it be glitch a few times as well.

There is a little bit of weird UX there, where if you set the bind phrase in the web UI, but then flash with a different bind phrase, it will still use the phrase set in the web UI. And you need to go reset it through the web UI to fix it.

Its not about instructions. It's about reliability. Way too many different companies making ELRS receivers. Some work and some don't. When you fail safe 50% of what you are building and everything is correct it makes you loose confidence. Been flying TBS for 8 years and only one failsafe. Started flying RC in 1976 and while I like many features of ELRS I do not like crashing a quad because of crap hardware.

I actually see this quite a bit at work since one of my responsibilities is to teach highly technical skills to a group of people. I usually have to teach it 3 different ways for everyone to pick up on it since some people learn best by reading it, others by watching it, and some by hearing it. Just a difference in the way some brains are wired vs others :)
