My mind is officially being blown away by this new collaboration project between Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. Not only that they just dropped this single a couple of days ago, but they performed it LIVE for the first time at the 63rd GRAMMYs ® 2021.
And guess what you and I can learn from this performance?
Spoiler alert: A TON!!!

The modulations in this case goes further back to the early 70s, from the Phillie International sound with producers Gamble and Huff, and Motown, especially the Jackson 5 ballads. The look of course is early 70s Stylistics, Spinners, and DelFonics. The ending harmonics reminds me of 90s groups like Jodeci and Boys to Men.

Bruno Mars worked with the greats! Not David Foster but maybe so easy to tell that this was inspired by David Foster. BRUNO MARS is a musical genius. Regarding modulation, he was with their band in Hawaii at 4 years old. Those songs sang by his parents were lots of modulations and also by His uncle Johnny Valentine. Johnny is still singing and Bruno's cousins are also singers.

Yeah, I think we need to back off on mentioning David Foster, and start talking about David Foster's influences. For instance, Maurice White (Earth Wind & Fire) "left the door open" for Foster to learn how to vibe with soul music. And producer Charles Stepney (of Chess Records, Ramsey Lewis, Minnie Riperton fame) taught Maurice how to produce.

@@dai701 -- You were being fanatical and aggressive. His agreement with you doesn't change the truth. They ARE pulling from the styles that came before and are also putting their own uniquely inventive spins on those styles. It's fans like you that have made it more difficult for the wider professional musical community to give Bruno the respect he deserves as a truly gifted musician in his own right. Why? Because those who don't know about the history of music crown him as the most original when what he's been doing was already being done by many others. Bruno's the amalgamation of the brilliance that came before and that's what is special about him. He's not inventing a wheel. Because of his love and respect for those who came before him, he is courageously re-imagining it in a manner that others have been failing to do. If someone were to say that Silk Sonic's a 2021 re-imagining of The Chi-lites, one wouldn't be wrong. Listen to their song, "Have You Seen Her," and you'll be shocked at the musical similarity. Or The Manhattan's, "Wish You Were Mine," which begins almost identically to "Leave the Door Open." Do you think it's a coincidence that Bruno appears to be channeling Sammy Davis, Jr.'s physical mannerisms in Silk Sonic's Grammy performance? None of it is coincidence. It's all deliberate and IT. IS. PHENOMENAL. Are there some similarities to what David Foster's done? Yep. Just as there are similarities to what the Motown musicians did. And Foster and Motown pulled from what came before, as well. None of this is happening in a bubble. Even Mozart pulled from those who came before him.

Modulation is a tactic, a tool, but not a requirement. The key to Soul is the groove. Go back and listen to the purveyors of Soul (hint: not David Foster, By the way). These producers, Thom Bell, Norman Harris, Hal Davis, Smokey Robinson, Gamble/Huff, etc., have a whole lot in their toolbox besides the changing of keys. Soul is much deeper than that.

Consider the work of producer Charles Stepney, the producer credited with teaching Maurice White (Earth Wind & Fire) how to produce.

There not really modulations. The song uses tonicization mostly. The only time the song really modulates is after the bridge going back into the chorus towards the end

All do respect, the chord progression is not totally modulation in the sense of going to another key. For instance the bridge is in the parallel minor of the major key Like: Verse in C major, middle transfer goes up a minor 3rd to Eb, which is relative major of C minor, (paral& climbs that scale i to the hook in F maj (lV chord),. That said, It’s probably not a great idea to presume one man, could have a monopoly on modulations. You need to check the Jacksons from ‘70’s like, Nevee Cab SY Goodbye or Got to Be There.

This is totally reminiscent & a nod & borrow to the phenomenal Philly Soul sound of Gamble & Huff & groups like The Stylistics & Blue Magic, give them a listen, you'll m see many are comparing it to Motown, The Jackson 5, The Temptations & some are even placing it w/80s RnB & Soul, but this goes back just a bit further than that to late 1970's Philly sound. Bottom line, Anderson .Paak is a beast in his own right, a master percussionist/musician & Bruno Mars could be 1 of thee BEST male RnB Soul singers since Luther Vandross & together, they are taking RnB music & vocals back 2 where they belong, #OnlyInTheVoiceBoxOfTheUberTalented !!! #MASTERPIECE #UghIAmTotallyStanGirlingSilkSonic #BestThingSinceJodeciBackIn91

No dude...David Foster had nothing to do with the writing or the production of this song. It is strictly SOUL influences, the likes of Charles Stepney, Gamble and Huff, Thom Bell, etc. Both Bruno and Anderson are influenced by the soul and r&b music of the 70s and 80s...I'm sure the rest of the album will reflect that as well. You should listen to Anderson's Malibu and Ventura albums. They are both well trained musicians and composers...
