There are many steps from writing a melody sketch to recording a theme with a full orchestra. In this video, I take you along the path of composing, orchestrating, and recording a melody as the main theme for an animated film. Watch the scoring session: bit.ly/TLOTSession
"The Library of Things" is a 3D-animated short film and was part of my graduation from the master Composing for Film at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam and The Netherlands Film Academy. For the film's music, I was awarded the very first "Keep an Eye film score award."
If you haven't seen the film yet, you can find it on vimeo.com/276234250

Really nice job Tom, beautiful theme! Love the dreamy pendulums in the background. And the fact that your melody is actually an A minor tune gives the whole a nice bittersweet touch. btw, I had never thought of punching my own music box tunes, that's a great idea :)

Thanks a lot! :). And I don't do it all the time, but it gives a nice piece of memorabilia of a project :)

But…. I loved the dramatic “feel” transitioning from the A major to A minor… even if it were a short film… 😉 Thanks for sharing your process. Do you work with Cubase only?

Thank you! For composition, in only work in Cubase, yes :)

Very educational, very motivating, very inspirational. I Would like to know how you decide upon the number of musicians in the orchestra sections. With love from India

Thank you! Usually, this is provided by the party you work with (the orchestra in Macedonia had a set number of strings). If you want a more intimate sound, you could always ask for fewer players

I would benefit from you playing how you progressed through your iterations so there is an opportunity for me to follow how/why you made the changes you explain, let my ear, rather than my brain, appreciate your process.
