Quick update!! This stuff works!! 2 of your videos has helped me much! I started my own red beans from actual beans and may I say they're growing amazing!! I also started composting and I see major results in the soil. Thanks again for your videos very simple and helpful!
Hey, good stuff! Yea since then I've been digging holes everywhere I can, dumping kitchen scraps in it and planting something on top of it. Don't have too much space left for many more holes now lol. Glad the videos were of benefit though! We are all students and I'm constantly learning more every chance I get.
I've been doing this for a couple years now with amazing results. My original dirt is clay and rocks, and I can see the improvement with each digging. I dig a hole about 1'-2', take the rocks out, put a few inches of twigs, then kitchen scraps, cover with old potting soil then original dirt. Hopefully in a few years the old dirt will be more loose like yours.
I think I will start adding some twigs in when I do it now to give my ground more substance 👍🏼👍🏼. My original dirt is pretty much sand so I keep adding as much organic matter as possible when I can to hold more moisture.
Thank you for this reminder. I stopped throwing scraps away and then started back, but I've had a tugging feeling lately to create my own soil. Going to get on this ASAP.
Also quick question. Does composting help you make your own soil? And I heard you say something might grow so are you mixing seeds? I know that I asked alot.
Yes it does! A lot of times as it all breaks down you could literally grow straight in it so I just allow it all to break down in the place that I will be planting in the near future. And as far as things possibly growing, I think I dug everything deep enough but sometimes those squash seeds can pop up if it isn’t deep enough. Not really an issue though.
Thank you for your interesting program. Your approach is pleasant and easy to follow. QUESTION: what organic fertilizer and mineral mix do you sprinkle over the manure? Thanks for sharing you knowledge and expertise!
Apologies for my delayed response. I can't recall exactlyyyy as that was a while ago but I know for sure that it was at least similar to what I do now on occasions which would consist of rock dust, bone meal, kelp meal, gypsum and some general organic fertilizer which might have been Garden tone from the brand Espoma.
Do you have critters digging up your scraps when you put them straight in the ground? I use my kitchen scraps but put them in pots covered by soil and other plant matter (and sometimes another pot on top until they decompose).
I personally do not have critters that I am aware of that dig up anything where I am in 10b. Only thing roaming around is the occasional cat and I don’t think they are trying to dig 1.5 feet deep to get something lol. Seems like you have a good idea going though of adapting to your possible critters.
@@eatthecanvas We have possum and racoon who would dig anything shallow but maybe not 1.5 ft. The method I'm using puts the kitchen scraps along with maybe some leaves and plant debris in bottom half of a planter pot, then covered with an equal layer of soil/potting mix - what ever you have. I plant right into this right away and by the time the roots get down to the kitchen scraps they are mostly decomposed. My plants LOVE this and its relatively critter proof! :-) But then I have a lot of pots!
@@Bgraytful ah ok I don’t see too many of those in my area. That’s pretty much what I do in the ground so I can definitely see that working in a pot as well especially if it decomposes enough! Part of the goal of someone who gardens is learning how to make it work in whatever circumstances you have and then growing that knowledge from there ✊🏼
I went out to my garden bed one morning to put some scraps and found something had dug a hole. Probably a cat. Now I scatter orange peels over the top of the bed, since cats supposedly hate the smell. I haven't found another hole yet.
Not by putting it as deep as I did, thougghhh I did learn that squash seeds can actually come up from a foot underground lol. Had no idea. But those were the only ones that came up from that deep.
