Backyard compost systems can be used for sanitation in combination with a compost toilet. They can also recycle dead animals as well as just about any other organic material commonly discarded when a compost system isn't available. This video is the 3rd in a series by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook and The Compost Toilet Handbook, demonstrating how to include animal mortalities in a compost system.
Here's Part 1: • Composting Dead Animal...
Here's Part 2: • Composting Dead Animal...
Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com/Humanure-Handb...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com/Compost-Toilet....

Amazing garden and property you have! Thank you for what you do, Joe. I wish we all could live like you do. I've been composting in the city for 14 years, no room for such a setup but one day I'll be able to compost everything.

badgers is a problem in the uk but they are protected, but that's due to the law not being updated yet as badger's are no longer endangered anymore they are thriving and they carry TB, which is the other concern as it carries over to cows, and if one got it the rest also have to be terminated along with that one cow.

can I compost in a 55 gallon drum with holes all around the drum(wondering if that will still work)?

What's the reason for the metal (pig?) fencing on the top? To keep animals out? Thanks for your videos.

In 41 years of composting in the same place, ONCE. early on, I had a stray dog on top of my pile trying to dig into it. I probably wasn't using enough cover material back then. I got into the habit of keeping a piece of wire fencing on top of the active pile to keep anything from digging into it. My other active compost bin remains without wire and I have not had any problems there, so it's probably overkill.

Great vids and presentations.. Found your channel looking for answers as to why I was being told that animal composting isn't healthy or safe for food gardens. Obviously you disagree.. Not sure why I was being told that. Just dont wanna get my family sick due to being uninformed.. Thanks for the info

It think the safety component is about maintaining a high enough temperature for a long enough time in order to kill all the bad shit. Cold composting (the type that most people do) doesn't get anywhere near hot enough for safety and can also attract pests into your bin.

Don’t know if you can help but I’m having a tough time finding sawdust that doesn’t have a high percentage of redwood in it. I hesitate to use redwood since it is resistant to rotting. That’s why it is used so much over here on the west coast. Can it be effectively used as a cover material?

At humanurehandbook.com there is a cover material pdf that you can download.

We have had success with cedar sawdust. Pile it up and let it rot for a while (years?). That may make a difference.

Thx for sharing again! I think segregating urine does make sense in some cases. First, it is a fantastic liquid fertilizer (1:5 - 1:10 with water). Second, I'm experimenting with segregating and soaking biochar with it. Then it goes into the compost. A metaanalysis by Bruno Glaser showed that the biochar gives a plus of 10% growth. I know, this might not be worth the effort for the home gardener ...

Urine separation makes sense when urine is the only thing that can be collected and recycled. When all the toilet material is being collected and recycled, separating urine out makes no sense at all.

@@jcjenkins01 I collect the toilet material of one person and the foodwaste of 4 in buckets that i store. Too much urine causes trouble with fermentation in this system ("exploding" buckets).

@@flowerchild777 Solved the problem by adding small amounts of biochar. Sawdust is a bit tricky in my area so i skipped this. Was a mistake ...

I went on with my experiment, Mr. Jenkins and I have to say that separation of some (about 1/8 in my case) amount of urine absolutely makes sense for charching biochar and reintegration of biochar-urine-slurry into the system (bucket). Yes, this is extra work and inconvenient, but I want to say that the extra work has proven to be worth the effort.
