BMFORMWORK EPISODE: 18 Steel Fixing/Tying Steel
In This Video I show how I tie steel for off-form concrete walls for a modern construction house. This is how I install wall reinforcement using reo and nips.

Right hand twist clockwise takes a bit to get used too but much quicker when you get the hang of it.

Good job mate, looks great. Don't know anything about this type of work and I expected the reo to be staggered on each side to get more even steel within the slab. Agree with the comment below, solid concrete walls look good if that's the look you're going for, but are a PIA to work with if you want to retrofit anything.
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
My understanding is there would be no benefit to staggering the steel. Each mat is independent of the other and effects the strength of the face of the concrete. If you stagger each face it will have zero effect on the opposite face. The steel needs to be within say 50mm from the face of the concrete to be effective. But I'm not an engineer. I have never seen steel staggered in my career

We use MFE formwork which is easier & faster. You guys are old school - well done

Nice job. You have the rebar on chairs/spacers sitting against the ply holding the reo in place. Once you remove the formwork, won’t you then see the chair foot on the finished concrete wall as it’s pressed up against the formwork?
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 2 года назад
Hi mate, nope, for 2 reasons. The chairs are designed to not be seen but once wall is closed the wires are cut and the spacers move away from the ply. Yes some will be hard to ply but they are never solid enough for conc not to get between them and ply. Very very rare that you will see a plastic chair on the conc face.

Damn good job you do, have one question why don't do the whole house with pouring concrete, it seems to me cheaper and faster than installing blocks, etc. Thanks mate
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
It is far far far more expensive than bricks. And if you choose to add insulation it is very expensive as you have to build 2x concrete walls (sort of). Bricks are cheaper, brick insulation is better, modifying walls is easier and don't need access for concrete pumps and trucks.
@bakker071
@bakker071 2 года назад
Well that was a pretty fast tying action if you ask me, I don’t know if you do it allot. You might wanna look into tying guns. Their expensive but they pay themselves back pretty fast.
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 2 года назад
Yeah they're not worth it for me. I tied these walls in November, It's now July and I havn't tied any steel in between that time! I find the ties are a bit messy looking with the machine and they protrude a lot which can effect cover.. not good for off form. But when Milwaukee brings one out I'm sure I'll buy it.

Do you need to spray your forms down with release oil or is there a film on the ply? Thx
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 2 года назад
Because the ply is brand new it is so smooth that there is no need for release oil. I find it makes no difference on new ply. we only use brand new ply for these jobs.

Nice to see this done with pride and accuracy though. A lot of steel fixers and formworkers in Sydney who are actually cowboys. What's the go with patching bolt holes ? Is it rammed in during pour to colour match or cast and placed later ?
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783
@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 2 года назад
Thanks mate, After we strip and conc has cured and the colour has had time to lighten the bolt holes are filled with special grout which water proofs the holes and seals everything. sometimes the holes are patched flush to hide them or in this case the holes will be patched shy to make the bolt holes a feature.
