CONFUSING FOREIGN ELECTRICS IN THE UK! 🤔 - Electrician Life.
Taking over from another electrician's work is never an easy task, but it's certainly made a lot harder when everything is labelled in a foreign language! Cory's taking to Google Translate for this episode as he tries to work out Polish while wiring up some new Quinetic lighting. What could possibly go wrong?

If the CU is done well, as you said, why rip it out for the sake of a shed circuit and possible future expansion? No need for the waste and cost. Fit a 3 way board with RCBO and two blanks.

Polish sparkies rewired our house. They were subcontracted to another subcontractor who we nominated to do the work. We have polish writing on the cables much like in the video. But they did a good job 8 years ago. We’ve since had an inspection and a general check of the wiring as we had an English contractor wire our shed 2 years ago. The house wiring passed with flying colours, yet the shed, garden and hot tub are wired from a new consumer unit in the shed, and loads of issues have needed to be put right. So much for using a cowboy contractor who is supposed familiar with standards. Much respect to the polish guys who did our work. Yet a curse the the Birmingham contractor who are no longer in business who mucked up the consumer unit in the shed and the 32A isolator for the hot tub.
@johngarza424

That would suck I would be Google translating the heck out of those wires but I live in the u.s. so the chances of polish electricians doing a job here and leaving in the middle of the job and labeling the wires in polish is highly unlikely

My house also has walls full of electric stuff, thanks to previous owners. All the lights have push buttons, combined with a switch in the wall receiving the push button signals. Those are not in a central location but just in random places more or less near each light. When one of my lights broke, I spent months trying to find the switch with metal detectors and stuff, but no luck. In the end I managed to find it using a telephone line wire tracker connected to the lamp socket (with the breaker turned off). It was buried in the wall near my ceiling behind 5 cm of plaster. Complete insanity.

I'm a Polish electrician and whatever you found in this property is far away from Polish standards in electrical installations. In the past I've found a lot of installations done by British or any other electricians which were terrific but never thought about it as it was the national standard of the nation. Unfortunately the guy wiring the installation was from Poland and was the scruffy one and even maybe not a qualified electrician but used the opportunity. Whenever I do any installation I'm writing everything in English :) so it's not a standard practise. I know it's easy to say "it's all the foreigners fault" but i think not really fair.

When you do come across dodgy workmanship, exain to the customer that what is done is a bodge & not to standard, & quote them to put it right. Most customers want to have jobs done properly. 😁🇬🇧🇬🇧

Problem two: Mostly the "not so good worker" works in foreign countries then the very good worker found a job in home country very easy. Problem three: If some companies put her own worker with them e.g. housebuilders from poland if the build the house in UK. Same happens here in Federal Republic of Germany and Kingdom of Thailand with foreign companies. In Kingdom of Thailand the British electricians use often British brand and sockets/plugs. Not bad after they use fuse inside plugs. Every how know the thai electrical power systems know that this is not a bad idea. Specially on military places the German Besatzungstruppen install her own French, Russian, British, or US-system power system with own house builder and electrician. After they leave all must re-create all. It was funny to see the US or UK homes here in Germany. Problem four: What is with the Commonwealth electrician how learn in Australia, Canada or Hongkong and work now in UK?

@paulbrady5772
@paulbrady5772 Год назад
How do you know?
@stefanokrzeja001
@stefanokrzeja001 Год назад
@@paulbrady5772 It shows. In Poland, electricians do not do such things, while construction workers often make mistakes because they have no knowledge. In Poland, in order to become an electrician, you must complete a vocational school in which you study for 3 or 5 years, and additionally you have to pass exams authorizing you to practice. Qualifications to practice the profession must be renewed every 5 years by passing an examination of regulations and professional knowledge. In Poland, the vocational education system has been very similar to the German system for 100 years, therefore German companies willingly employ graduates of Polish vocational and technical schools with various specializations. In addition to vocational subjects, school education includes general subjects, e.g. in mathematics, physics, chemistry, history, biology, Polish and one or two foreign languages. After graduation, you have the option of continuing your education at a higher level. Depending on your exam results, you can study at a university or polytechnic. Therefore, construction workers very often take part in the implementation of electrical installations, because their work is cheaper.

It goes for every country that occasionally you have some proper plonkers that aren't qualified to do the job they were hired for, but workers from countries that have very relaxed regulations and no proper oversight tend to do a crappier job because they're used to being able to get away with anything, because no one ever checks their work.

Absolutely shockin! As many others have said - the nationality of the workman has nothing to do with the quality, just a bad choice by the builder; on the upside - they left enough slack in the lighting cabling for you to remediate the poor choices they made. Shed running off a 13A socket, with a fully rolled up 30-40m rolled up extension lead? If the load in the shed sustains over 10A it's going to start cooking that extension, let alone the issue of the flex running externally! Recessing the box for the switch receivers would have made a better look, but if I know Cory - he would have gone that way if he possibly could, so I'm sure there are good reasons for going surface mount.

If I work in the uk I have to write or Label in english and work after their Standards in the country. Maybe the second language is polish, german etc. if the owner isn' t from the uk.

Haha, that sounds very similar to me. I've had that situation here in Germany too. Polish workers (maybe electricians) only half-finished a construction site and then disappeared. All the lines were labelled in Polish, 80% of the work done was not according to German standards.

@@OldLordSpeedy You are confusing current and voltage, lighting circuit is protected by B6 (you can see it in DB shot), so it can only draw continuously 1.4kW, while entire DB can be subjected to currents up to main cutout fuse, which can go up to 100A (23kW).

@mrsmith6316 2 года назад
Racism? Behave yourself. Mate, you want to see what utter shambolic wiring from BRIT electricians I've seen in France. 115v on the ground wire? Light wiring runs wired into plug sockets is another. Seriously? There are some very dangerously wired houses by dodgy Brit sparkies out there. I had to help a mate rewire his extension because of it. Just because they don't want to pay a French artisan price. French wiring as standard is mind boggling if you have to reverse engineer I can tell you....

It’s nothing to do with criticising a race. Nationality is only relevant because the language barrier added additional confusion to a confusing job, and is relevant to the story line as he moved back to another country mid job. Cory has spent alot of time in Poland, even having family there at one point. ( and loved every minute of being there! )
