My first horn was, and still is, a Conn 6H from 1975. Love it and still trying to get the best out of the trombone. The tone is mellow and warm and the tone is great throughout the range as I am hearing you play it in real time. Thanks for showing off this great model of trombone. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦!!

My first horn was also a 6H. It belonged to a classmate of my older sister…he got kicked out of band for drinking beer on a band bus. This was 1968. It probably was a mid-60s model. I had a lesson with Bill Watrous when I was 19. He told me to get a Bach 12 or a 16M. Of course I did. Played that 12 for 30 years. Returned to the 6H because I simply couldn’t get enough volume on the Bach on loud salsa gigs! Never looked back.

I have a 1950 Elkhart that I used in college and still playing it. I have another 6h that has a nice warm sound too. It's not an Elkhart but still a great horn. You sound great on yours! I wish you many happy years with it.

Just picked up a 6h for 100 bucks. Drove 3hrs for it but couldn't beat it for the price. Needs some dent and tuning slide repair, a sonic bath, and slide replating but once again for 100 bucks can't beat it. I believe Bill Watraus also proffered the 6h

I bought a Conn 6H in 1968 and loved it. The chrome plating started flaking off the inner slide within a month. I brought it back to the dealer, and they replaced it with a second 6H, which again played beautifully but started shedding chrome in a few weeks. At that point I gave up and bought a King 2B silversonic, which I still own and play. About 2000 I met a Conn factory rep at the NAMM show in LA who had been around in 1968 and asked him what had gone wrong. He said that because of the Vietnam war, Conn could not get brass tubes to make inside slides - the brass tubes were prioritized to make ammunition. So they tried molding a brass sheet into a tube and then welding it, but the chrome plating would not stick to the weld. He did not know how long the experiment lasted, but I would imagine not for long.

A friend of mine had a Elkhart Conn 6H. He played it on all the James Bond movies for John Barry, in fact he was John Barry’s first call trombone player. Unfortunately he died a few years ago, but his widow asked me to sell off his collection and said I would like you to have one of his trombones. I picked the 6H it’s fantastic. The trombone players name was Maurice Pratt one of the UKs great players.

Two questions here: 1) Have you ever come across or played a vintage Conn with a Coprion bell? Mine is a 1957 Director 12H, which was sold as a student trombone for my older brother. He didn't last long with it, and my parents had an unused trombone so that was 'my choice' too! I started at 4th grade in 1965, but I'm still playing (and loving it) at 65 years old. I've read that the alloy of the copper/brass bell makes for a mellower sound. I'm not good at judging that. 2) The slide needs some work so I'm thinking about sending it to The Slide Doctor? I came across him with some other trombone sites online. Anyone have experience with that service?

You sounded great. I loved those Ravel like glissandos towards the end, You left out Carl Fontana. I know he played whatever he could get, Bachs and Kings too but a lot of his work is on a 6H. How about demoing a Conn 74H. I am a big fan of this model. Its like a hybrid cross between a 78H and an 8H. Post Elkhart, but worth crossing the line for.

Paul, that is a very nice sounding trombone indeed and it looks great too. What a find! It definately sounds different to other horns you play, a different kind of mellow but for sure as good. I do not know about it's lowest register because you only touched it slightly today but it was not designed for mud moving. It is certainly singing by the time it reached the stave and above. As for another horn to play ... mmm a vintage 3B to do the direct comparison would be really interesting. Anyways thank you for your channel and super entertaining output. Cheers.

Hi Paul, that 6H is a great find. I had a 70's 6H that I paired will a 1961 lightweight slide from a Conn Constellation. This was what many professional trombonists of the 50's and 60's did. It really made the horn sing! It was a great combo of the mellow 6H gold brass bell and the zippy lightweight slide of the Connstellation. My suggestions of tenor trombones that you should explore(as I own excellent examples of all of these), would be the following...Martin committee(I have a1947 model - the trombone that Mr. Lawler based his custom trombones on - a Selmer Bolero, and marvelous some older Reynolds small and large bore Contempora's. Let me know. I have excellent examples of all of them. Kevin McAlley

@@PaulTheTrombonist Paul, the backstory is back when Ebay was fairly inexpensive and with some cash in my pocket I decided to go on a small bore trombones journey to find out how the small bore trombones of the past great players compared with my new 1993 King 100th anniversary Silver Sonic trombone. I became a series collector. Meaning, I collected series. I sourced the King B series. My King Tempo - aka 1B, 2B, 3B, 4B and 5b. Conn 2H, 4H, 6H, and 8H. Also I did the Connstellation series...28H, 38H, and 48H. These and many other brands - Holton, Selmer Olds and the like opened my eyes to what our former greats played.
