I've had a couple of people get in touch about it not working with ErgData. I've just done a test, and it worked for me. I'm on the latest PM5 firmware, latest iOS / app versions. Here's the process: 1) Open Echo - it asks to connect to PM5 2) Turn on PM5 3) Go to Connect - choose "Connect Heart Rate" 4) Pick 'Echo' - wait for it to connect. Confirm. 5) Stay on the Connect page on PM5 6) Launch Ergdata 7) It connects automatically 8) ErgData asks me if I want to remember HR. 9) Pick yes. 10) Start rowing - HR is on display. For me anyway.

I’m wondering I’m with this set-up and then tapping indoor row on the Apple Watch (along with the heart rate app and ErgData) do you get duplicate results?

I just updated to the latest firmware.. still can't get them connected simultaneously. I'll try an ANT+ dongle next Thanks for the video

Thanks for this! I tried Heartcast and although it said it was connected, it never actually worked. Glad this app seems to be working along with the workout app.

Yeah, I've been in touch with the developer of HeartCast, who didn't know about this problem. He's looking into it, but ECHO is the way to go for now.

I learned something today. I’m not sure if I’d trust it over the chest strap but I’m glad it’s possible.

Yeah - it works better for some than others. I find it's pretty accurate. But I still use the chest strap. However, if I ever forget the strap, it's good to know I can use this instead.

Also, just a note on the PM-5's handling of HR. Using Echo, you will quickly notice the heart rate display on the PM-5 is not always the same as shown on the Echo display, both phone & watch. This is because the PM-5 does it's own interpolation between samples of heart rate. Echo shows exactly what it read immediately. For example, if your HR moves from 100 to 110 on Echo, you might see the PM-5 show 102, then 105, then 108, then finally 110 after several seconds. Same for HR values coming down. Using a chest strap, this interpolation is not noticeable since the only way to know you HR is on the display. With Echo, you see the live source and then the PM-5 processing of that HR before they display it.

That's interesting. And actually more useful! Will be great if I need to use this for use on Zwift (I assume I can change the equipment I can connect to in the settings?)

@@rowalong Yes, Echo broadcasts as a Bluetooth heart rate monitor so anything that can connect to a BLE heart rate monitor should be able to receive heart rate from your watch using Echo. You won't need to change any settings in the app, the broadcasting is the same for all gear. The initial gear selection just customizes the connection instructions for the user.

@@edleonard911 Ah!! Very clever. Have you spotted the replies from people like Charlie (below) saying that can't get it to work? Any advice - just so I can step in and try to help people?

quick question. Can you connect this HRM app on your iPhone to the PM5 and then switch to Apple Fitness+ on the phone?
@rowalong
@rowalong 2 года назад
Sorry, i've only just spotted this. To be honest, I don't know. But Echo BLE does give you a free 2o minutes per exercise connection - so why not try it yourself?

All the best franchises have at least three episodes...the Godfather, Lord of the Rings etc! I’m thinking of buying an Apple Watch. How accurate is it for HR? I’ve heard it’s good for day-to-day activity but less accurate on intense efforts (like a 2k on the erg!) I don’t really need to connect to the PM5 as I have a chest strap for that, but the watch sounds good as an occasional alternative or for other activity.

Opinions vary to be honest. I find my watch is only ever one or two beats different to my Polar chest strap. I have it snug on my wrist so it doesn't move around when I'm rowing, and I don't think I've got too jerky a technique either. But I know other people who just can't get it to read right for them. My suggestion, if possible, is to find someone with an Apple Watch, and slap it on your wrist to check it out for yourself, before spending £400+ on one - only to find it doesn't read right for you. Not that it makes any difference, but I'm about to upgrade my Series 2 to a Series 6 - just a good indication of how happy I am with it.

hi Ed, thanks for your videos! But I have installed Echo and ErgZone I am not able to let them work together on my Concept2. I can connect Echo and can connect Ergzone, but only seperately. Can you help me out?
@rowalong
@rowalong 2 года назад
So it won’t accept your heart rate from Echo and the app connection from Ergzone? Have you tried a different app? (ErgData maybe) to see if it’s an app issue? Are you using the latest firmware on the PM5?

Doesn’t seem to work on mine the PM5 seems to only connect to one Bluetooth device at a time
@rowalong
@rowalong 2 года назад
Have you updated to the latest firmware? I know older firmware versions had bluetooth issues if it was on the latest hardware version. My PM5 is one of the original ones, and this allows the Bluetooth connection from Echo and a connection to Ergzone through the same phone. What rowing app were you using? It may be worth trying a different one (Ergzone is a good choice if you're not already using it) to see if that's maybe the issue too?

There's certainly some models of hardware that have issues. Get in touch with the developer. He's very responsive about this.

I can’t get this to work with ergdata. It looks like it’s connected but no numbers appear in the app. Drat.

Does it work when you’re not using an app? To be honest, I was really surprised when it worked with ErgZone. You could always download that and try it?
@laurieclark
@laurieclark 3 года назад
@@rowalong yes it does work without the app. I typically use the Just Row feature on the PM5 and I don’t see how to do that in ErgZone. For example, I row 2000+ meter warm up, then I row while you are talking, then I do the warm up with you. Then I row while you are talking, then do the workout, then...
@rowalong
@rowalong 3 года назад
@@laurieclark yeah, that’s the biggest flaw with ErgZone , that they haven’t implemented a JustRow option. How about this though. You CAN connect a Bluetooth HR directly to ErgData. Not to the PM5. Just go to settings (once you’ve connected ErgData to the PM5). I’m not sure if it’ll read itself, but you could try and see if it will connect that way? Again, two devices would work.
