Using the Web import method and specifying the Excel file, how do you setup scheduled refreshes to pull in any changes made to the excel file. This is from the point of view of self-hosted PBI Report server, not Power BI Service! ? When in PBI desktop you get the option to login with organisational/microsoft o365 account. but that options isn't available when setting up the data source in PBI RS.
Thanks Avi! I really appreciate the thought you put into this video. Not all creators take the time to reflect and think about the specific problems newbies like myself could run into! Great video. Keep up the good work! :)
I had this issue/error: "Query 'Parameter1 (2)' (step 'Source') references other queries or steps, so it may not directly access a data source. Please rebuild this data combination." solution: File -> Options -> Privacy -> "Always ingore Privacy Level settings" After that it works.
Thank you, it helped a lot! Pity that Microsoft didn't separate reading Excel from SharePoint into a separate option in Get Data, as currently it is not intuitive at all, and I believe it is a very common task
Hi Avi!! Thanks for the video. I was able to trouble shoot and connect to one of the files in Sharepoint. Next question I have is - How can I have this fiile on Auto refresh? I have shared the file online with my stakeholders and would like PBI to show real time data as soon as the file gets updated. Thanks!!
@@angelicalozano7085 refresh is set on the dataset. Check your license, though. I don't think the free version allows for it. Pro gets you some. Premium or PPU allows more, such as merges and references in the editor. As things change over time, please verify with the current MS licensing.
there's a much easier way of opening a single file (excel etc.) located in sharepoint. Browse to the file, click the 3 dot menu for the file, click details, scroll down the details pane to find the document web path. Copy this url into Power BI as shown in the video.
I'm getting data from a SharePoint Excel File. This works fine on power bi desktop but when I publish, my azure credentials don't work, how do you properly set it up on Power BI Online?
Hi Avi, Love the Video ans it is working:) I have another issue with the BI Sharepoint Connect, aybe you can Help me. I have a Sharepoint Bibliothek with document's in SUB folders, all Documents have Meta Data Like Responsible Person, valid areas and so on. If i now try to collect that Data with in Bi IT only show's Numbers instead of the Responsible Name and IT Shows only "list" by assigend areas.
Hello Avi! Awesome presentation. I have a real problem when connecting to a sharepoint online List. The data provided in the columns after making the first query looks like "asdf" the text inside isn't shown. What can I do? Can you help??
Hi Avi ! Great resource ! I have followed your advice but I am still having trouble connecting our Sharepoint Online Excel document to the Power Bi, we keep getting an error message "Access to the resource is forbidden", do you have any tips of suggestions please !
Hi, I am getting this error whole connecting to SharePoint online list Unable to Connect We encountered an error while trying to connect Details: "Microsoft Mashup Engine 1 Library Resources HttpResource Request failed: OData Version: 3 and 4, Error: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found (Not Found) Data Version 4. I was struggling to connect the share point file to PowerBI but after watching this video it was done. Really nice video and thank you Avi for your live example.
When I connect the way you showed me I DID NOT WORK, It only showed documents on the first page of sharepoint, but did not show anything in documents folder. And I have no clue how to access that folder as PowerBI does not pick that up

Hi Avi! Do you have any resources or help on doing this same process in Power Query Online? I have an excel table that is in a sharepoint folder that I'm trying to add to my dataflow but I just keep getting 'Invalid Credentials' errors.
Hi!!! Nice to meet you :) I need help with an issue connecting to Sharepoint online List. Could you help me? Please, I'll appreciate it. It seems that the connection is Ok, according to this video. I refresh the power BI but the new information doesn't appear in the power BI, I have only the information when I did the connection, since that day my power BI doesn't actualize although I Refresh All the power BI by myself. Thanks for the help Regards
Hi Avi, nice video. Would be great great if you could show how does this work once published to Service. Any specifics / tricks? Is gateway needed or not?
Hi, Excellent work on it. May I ask if can I connect to someone's sharepoint folder that has been shared to me including the sub-folder and sub files. Because here you have query it successfully as it is your own sharepoint folder but what if it is not your sharepoint folder? Makes sense? Additional on it, I want to query also the version history of the sharepoint folder and files which I do not own but has just shared to me. Thanks!
Thanks for this video. Got a question though - how can I filter data before its loaded to report from sharepoint list. As we know there is a limit of 5000 that we can load from SP so we would need to filter it.
I used these instructions to connect an Excel file, hosted on SharePoint, which seems to have worked fine. However, my data are not updating when I click "refresh"....Not sure what I'm doing wrong....
Hi Avi, thanks for this! I've built reports based on a local file. Now I uploaded the file to SharePoint but when trying to change the Data Source in PowerBI Desktop my credentials fail. I just wanted to know if what I'm trying to do is something doable regardless permission issues. Thank you!

Hallo Avi , I been struggling with this and suspect its admin control issue or Azure user permission. Our IT company who host cannot give me answer. I set up my own MS Office Enterprise account , now. The error I still get is : "Access to the resource is forbidden." as soon as I try to connect. But this time as it my own Enterprise acc I can go into admin control and fix it , just need guidance please.
Thanks Avi. Very clear on the process. I am still facing credentials issue though. Do we need access to the root itself? I just have access on one of the sub-folders where my excel input file resides.
Thank you for that tutorial, but main thing for me stays the same - i donk know how to get dashbord refrashed on local company server with power bi dashbords :( And my personal specific is that i am connecting to a lical SharePOint List (not online because sharepoint list online does not have possibiliti to refresh by schadules ) So how it shoud be done ?
Hello! Thank you so much for the video. It works. However, I have a report published and it is automatically refresh but it seems to have problems refreshing the Sara form the folder because it is attached to my user. Is there any way to fix this ?
I have my dashboard linked to an excel file on my laptop. I uploaded it to sharepojnt. If I change the source to the sharepojnt link will I loose my dashboard
Hi Avi, I can't thank you enough for this great video mate. Trust me, I was just thinking about to ask you yesterday arvo to post a video on these 3 types of data sources - SharePoint folder, SharePoint Online List & SharePoint list and that's exactly when I got an intimation on my mobile that you've done this video. Nowhere had I found such a demarcating explanation, not even on Microsoft website! Thanks a million mate and as the saying goes.. "Sow Saal Jiyo" and a Happy Diwali. Kind regards, Bhoga
I have created a report which collects data from different locations on share point page. each location is restricted to specific users. when I test one of the users who should not have access to all files, he still sees all data. in my connection to all files, I used the Organization log in. any idea or tips why security is not working?
Thank you for this video! What happens if I need to add more files in the share point folder selected in your example? Will they be combined automatically with the ones already there or I have to repeat the selection process all over again? I find it weird that we cannot just point out the full folder path in share point like we do with local folders.
I think that if the files you want to combine are in same folder, you will be able to combine them. Take into account that when you are inside power query you can combine/append as many tables as you want.
Thank you for this video. I am very new to Power BI and connections. Does this mean when you connect directly to the list or folder and you create dashboards, it updates automatically? More like a real-time data?
Importing data from sharepoint is a very nice first step to get your Power BI dashboards/reports automatically updated. A next step would be to configure the updates frequency in Power BI service. Take into in account that for doing so you need a paid account.

Excellent video. Your delivery of information is very clear. I do hit one problem when trying to load data from a Sharepoint list, however. If the list field contains a name that comes from the Active Directory Global Address List, it returns the person's GAL ID, e.g., 1054 , not their name.
And what if the report created in the power bi desktop and then uploading that report to sharepoint , will it reflect the current data after every refresh ?
Hi All. ... 1 query.. If we update SharePoint list data, will it be reflect on power BI. If we follow all the steps as mentioned in this video and establish the connection between 2 of them.. Please suggest😊
Hey Tanuj, Yeah, as soon as you refresh data in Power Bi, it fetches the latest data for you. So any changes made on SharePoint would be reflected in Power BI. The first method: You combined several Excel files from a Sharepoint folder. What if those 3 excel files have different columns and data? Will it make 3 seperate queries for it?
I've been trying to make it with a specific excel file and I can't, 6 months ago I could but I don't know what's going on now. Can you confirm that this is happening only to me?
Hello, thank you very much for the video. Do you know how to get the metadata from Sharepoint lists with PowerBI? Hola, muchas gracias por el video. Sabes como obtener los metadatos de las listas de Sharepoint con PowerBI?
Hello Avi: I get an error >> Unable to connect We encountered an error while trying to connect. Details: "Access to resource is forbidden." RETRY EDIT CANCEL I wonder if this is Licensing issue? Please advise.
Amazing video! Thank you, mate. For the ones looking for a way to import a file located in sharepoint ( in a different folder than "Documents") go directly to minute 05:42.
Hi.. I posted a question on another video of yours but I think this is more relevant. I have the same SharePoint file connected to two different pbix file. I created visuals on one, copy and paste the visuals on the other pbix file. Usually it works for other datasets.. but it didn't work on files connected to SharePoint. I also tried to copy the advanced editor data in query editor to the other pbix file. Yet it didn't work. Can you please help?

Hi! I can't find a better option than you, I searched all over, but you make a good explanation! Can you please (really!), help to get the URL from images in a folder from Sharepoint to PowerBI? Because if I follow the same steps as this video, it shows me an error, that it doesn't support JPEG, PNG, etc. Thanks
Hi Avi, Thanks for the video was very helpful but I could not get it work with for my sharepoint. When I pass in the root sharepoint URL and connect with the Power BI Sharepoint connector I get the following error: Details: " We found extra characters at the end of JSON input" Have you encountered this before / know how to get around this? Thanks Kevn
Hi, would it be possible to explain how to CHANGE the source to SharePoint Folder or File or OneDrive? Having tried many times so far, we got various errors. Thanks a lot.
@4:35 If you click on "Binary" there it will lead you directly to the file you need, from there you need to click on "Table" and you will get exactly what you need!
I use this in Power Query to create a link to a file in Sharepoint site. The issue is it works but when I add files or rename them on the Sharepoint side and do another query to the Sharepoint folder to a file it keeps giving me the list of file names when I did it the first time. I do not get an option to refresh the view so I can see the new files as well. I tried Refresh All and then tried a new query to the same Sharepoint Folder. Please help.
Hi Avi, I have a SharePoint list with 10,000 rows as my datasource. The Power BI refresh is extremely slow, takes up to an hour and often doesn't even work. Do you have a recommended limit of SharePoint list rows for import to Power BI? Thanks.

This video saved me. Thanks so much for clearing up the jump to combine on SharePoint Folder data sources. When I was trying to refresh data it was breaking because I didn't use the method you showed to exclude all the junk I didn't want from the site so I would get no-key errors.
Thanks a lot for the video, Avi. Most instructive. When connecting to a SharePoint Online list, I am facing what seems to be an authentication issue: error 700003 (Your organization has deleted this device). Any idea what that means and how it can be fixed? I can't get past the authentication screen. And I created the SharePoint site, so that should not be a problem.
Thanks Avi. I'd like to load each of those Binary rows into a separate table rather than combining them into one single table because they all have different contents (columns and rows). I have saved all these tables in one path in a SharePoint. How to da that?
Does anyone know how to change the name of the import to the column names that is actually on the sharepoint? this is such a basic thing, i don't know why power bi just doesn't do it automatically...

Hi Avi - how would one set up the SharePoint as a data cluster in the enterprise data gateway when using both an Oracle source and SharePoint folder or file? Thank you
Hi Avi, I have been getting random error on daily refreshing of PBI ... Can it be because of Sharepoint ? There are several sites and files connected to one report and 5-6 are updated on daily basis.
how can i get import option in my live dash board is there any possibility........i need import option then i click import button then it is load my local files .its possible??? or not
Hey Solvex, Can you elaborate a bit. With Uploads do you mean, you just want to get a count of the files uploaded to a SharePoint folder? And Downloads is how many times the file was downloaded (this may not be easy to get I think). Power On! / Avi
