this is a live performance using ableton + bink looper
there are no pre-recorded loops; everything is being played in real time
many thanks to georjie adams, mathieu keith, and dirk heilmann
without you, everything i make would be worse
and a special thanks to frank wienk (binkbeats) for making the software that made this music possible
like many artists right now, i've lost all sources of income for the foreseeable future. if you like what i do and want to support me, here's a link to donate:

I am floored at the talent and technical knowledge. You're a powerhouse, bro! And I want to express my appreciation for the Bink Looper Tutorial as well because that, as well as watching you work, has changed my whole perspective on solo performance. Thank you and can't wait to hear more! With love from the void, -Finut-

Hey Connor! Found my way here through your bink looper tutorial. Really high quality stuff you’re putting out there! I appreciate the attention to detail in this piece - the way the cinematography and music is synchronized in its movement throughout the performance really draws me deeper into the flow of the music. Well done - this is a style of story telling that gels perfectly with the youtube format. I hope to see/hear more from you

Amazing performance. Love how busy and fast-flowing this is, but so calm once the acoustic guitar enters. For the looping, do you have Ableton’s looper automated, or are you using some other techniques? Edit: Just found your Binklooper tutorial, will have to watch the whole thing. 🙂

Very cool music. I am researching the live looping aspect of performances like this. You do it so well I don't think alot of people can understand the complexity and musicianship it takes to perform like this. I am wanting to build a project utilizing brass instruments and creating music in the same way you are with ableton. Thanks for sharing your talents. You have inspired me for sure.

Connor, congratulations on your project and musical initiative. This song is great! You are innovating! I would like to ask you a very personal question: It has nothing to do with technical parts. It has to do with the method of composition/inspiration. Can you tell me if you build music in the order you play it or if, on the contrary, your music is the result of a deconstruction of a song you sequence prior to the performance mode, say, standard (conventional structure) that is then cut and sliced to fit your concept? I also notice the modal changes you can make throughout the songs. Are these modal changes the cause or the effect of your method? I hope you can light up my questions! Thanks in advance Connor!
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 3 года назад
I wish I had an easy answer, but it's usually a pretty messy process. I never make any songwriting templates with the intention of forcing myself to start from scratch with every new song and live-set. This means that my process changes continuously, always evolving from previous mistakes. For this song, I think I improv'd some of the themes (like the intro synth theme with the weird phasing rhythm) and built a song-structure sketch around it. It sat around collecting dust for a while, and then I went back and re-wrote it from the ground up for live performance. When I'm thinking about creating highly-detailed, through-composed songs like this, it's almost easier for me to write from scratch, rather than re-working a song I've already written. If I try to re-write an existing song, it's often difficult to live-loop without changing the structure, which can mess with the pacing... Whereas when I start from scratch, I can write for the specific motions of moving between the instruments, picking mallets up, etc, while still pacing things out how I want. Regarding the modal changes, that just tends to happen a lot in my music. With natural minor keys, I'm always fascinated by the gravity towards the minor key built off the fourth scale degree. This song moves fluidly between G# minor and C# minor in that way. "Soon This Air Will Be Too Thin" falls from G minor to C minor. "Hold" dances around C minor and F minor, and ends up in Bb minor at the end... You see the pattern. As Jacob Collier puts it, the circle of fourths is the "most minor" sound possible, so I guess I'm just resistant to major tonalities.

@@connorshafran , thank you so much for your feedback! It is the creative process that inspires me. I am trying to get out of the "one chord sequence" looping limitation. Not easy, but, as you say, it´s all an evolving process. This is my tryout based on a legacy project I love! Thank you for your music! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QoRKpclDCos.html

Thanks! It's a KORG MicroKorg. Although in the intro, I'm using it as a Midi-Controller for a synth I made in Ableton using Operator and Collison. The actual sound of the Korg can be heard in all the other synth parts.

I don't think Ableton Lite comes with Max for Live... If so, you won't be able to use any Max plug-ins like Bink Looper.

@connorshafran
@connorshafran 2 года назад
Arranging this kind of looping/solo-performance stuff is a bit like being a choreographer. The location of the instruments dictates the musical possibilities. My advice is to build a setup, and then write music for it (rather than the other way around).

Congrats on your work! Awesome stuff! I'd like to ask you one technical question (sorry if it's already been asked): How do you record your Ableton performance? I'm trying with rewire mode but max for live gets disabled.
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 4 года назад
I just use the session record function and record all the parts onto their own channels. It'll cause some weird things to happen on the EFX channels, but you can just delete everything on them except for the recorded automation. Also, it's not a bad idea to just set up a blank channel for every mic input you have (or stereo pairs so you can use half as many channels) and just set them to record the whole time, so if anything weird happens and something doesn't record, you have the audio on those channels as a backup. Hope that helps.
