UPDATE (2023): These days, I'm using ClyphX Pro (+ Ableton Live) to control the looping. It's much more reliable and faster to program than the Bink Looper. For anyone interested, here's bit more info about the performance + filming process: The music was performed in real-time as you're hearing it. With Bink Looper, I'm able to pre-program when certain microphones or audio-inputs start and stop looping. I do this by launching prepared "scenes"- basically, huge sets of scripted commands. For example, I launch a scene at @4:37. It instructs one of the Handpan channels to wait for 12 beats, record for 12 beats, and start playing those 12 beats back immediately. While that's all happening, the Bass channel waits for a total of 48 beats before starting a loop of 12 beats. At 60 beats into the scene, the synths, hi-hat/snare, kick, and paintbrush-effect all start playing through a variety of filters, delays, and other effects to build up the intensity. The long note played on the MicroKorg Synth is sampled for later use. New scene launch at @5:22. For the video, we filmed the full song multiple times to get a variety of camera-angles on all the instruments. The overhead camera stayed on a tripod throughout the shoot, which made it relatively easy to use a plate-shot of the perimeter to mask out the camera people on each side.

thats so cooll great performance.. great music i want to ask .. what happens with ableton performance with so many effects loaded plus whats happening with latency.. did you had any problems ever ?
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 2 года назад
@@gaithouri Haha, this is the problem that keeps me awake at night. It's always an uphill-battle to keep the latency low without melting the CPU. In general, I try to only use low-intensity Ableton devices, and hardly any external plug-ins. Just some occasional Pro-Q 3s. Additionally, I have a beefy Mac Mini with a fast processor, and a ultra low-latency Interface, the Presonus Quantum 26x32 (Thunderbolt). Last thing - these days I don't use any software instruments. Only hardware synths. That really helps free up the CPU for the important stuff. Hope this helps!

Hey, I love the hang drum in this! I was wondering your thoughts on using the presonus quantum series interfaces? Looking at getting one of those for the low latency, but I noticed it doesn't have direct monitoring, has that ever been an issue for you for example for recording vocals on a project that has some plugins on it adding extra latency? For example, when you are performing the hang drum, do you notice that few millisecond latency in your monitor headphones? I am super sensitive to latency as a percussionist. So impressed by this performance!! Also, what kind of pan drums are those, are they the original PanArt hang drum?
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 4 года назад
Hey there, these are all very good questions. Overall, I love the Quantum, and I would go so far as to say that it has made this whole journey possible for me. No, there isn't any direct monitoring, but it's never been a real issue for me. When I'm performing, I need to listen to the whole mix (with effects), and when I'm doing studio recording, I usually use a different interface with good pre-amps (like the Apollo Twin). This thing is really designed for live performance, in my opinion. It doesn't sound great, but it's fast. Regarding the bit of latency- yes, I do notice it. I run Ableton at 128 samples, which comes out to 5.83ms round-trip latency at 48khz. I feel the latency a bit when I'm playing hand-percussion, and it does suck a bit, but I'm just thankful it's as fast as it is with my old clunky 2013 macbook. You get used to it. The purple handpan is made by Pantheon Steel, and the silver is made by Aura Handpans. Original PanArts are very hard to come by.

how do the 2 separate midi pads come into play if i may ask? (total noob) one for beat making one for program changes/midi mapping into Ableton?

I could do it all from one if I wanted to; it's just a matter of physical distance. I needed one controller close to my handpans, and the other close to the floor tom / book.

Quick question: How do you deal with latency? :)
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 4 года назад
leoncelestine a really fast audio-interface. i use the presonus quantum (thunderbolt). even with my old clunky computer, i can work at 5.8ms latency / 128 samples.

How are you unarming the mics with the Binklooper? When I run a second scene to unarm a mic, it stops the current sample. I've tried adding in a second launch envelope, but it still stops the sample from playing before restarting.
@connorshafran
@connorshafran 4 года назад
Andrew Eldridge While a sample is playing, I never need to un-arm that same channel. But if you mean that your next scene stops all currently-playing samples, you just need to click on the empty scene slot on that channel and hit “Command+E,” or right-click and choose “remove stop button.” When you launch that scene, it won’t affect that channel and your sample will keep playing.
@AndrewEldridge
@AndrewEldridge 4 года назад
connor shafran The first answer is what lead me to the fix. The samples were playing but I could still hear my original signal. Found out my interface needed to be set to DAW mode allowing me to do all routing within Ableton. Thanks for the help!
