Simulation of Conqueror tank projectile hitting Object 775 turret cheek armor
120mm L1 (Tungsten Carbide core APDS) at 1400 m/s
vs
Basic thickness:
40 mm CHA* + 320 mm aluminum armor + 280mm CHA*
Line Of Sight thickness ~ 730mm
*Cast Homogeneous Armor
120mm Ordnance QF gun (L1) muzzle velocity - 1463 m/s, 1400 m/s at 0.7 km
The core lost structural integrity as it flew between the layers of armor and broke into fragments within the aluminum layer. If the core survived this moment, it could certainly defeat the armor. My faliure model have a certain amount of randomness to keep the damage distributed realistically. Considering that the disintegration started with a few cracks, I think that given another attempt, the core might have survived.

Someone in the comment section of the survey predicted what would happen. The core lost structural integrity as it flew between the layers of armor and broke into fragments within the aluminum layer. If the core survived this moment, it could certainly defeat the armor. My faliure models have a certain amount of randomness to keep the damage distributed realistically. Considering that the disintegration started with a few cracks, I think that given another attempt, the core might have survived.

Does structural integrity matter because the shell starts to spread out over a wider area going in less deep because of that?

@@divinesan7786As a rule of thumb, yes. But most composites are effective against HEAT because of specific materials. In this case steel and aluminum are equally as weak to HEAT, so you can almist treat it as if its monolithic steel in terms of effectiveness. Aluminum is actually worse for its thickness. Its only better in terms of weight efficiency. So at 700mm or so, modern HEAT can go through. Although at the time, very few could.

@@jintsuubest9331 Same as the Aluminum. Differential hardness and density leads to different pressures on various parts of the penetrator. That means changes of direction and fracturing. It's the same reason you see Alot of RHA-HHA-RHA or HHA-RHA-HHA spaced arrays as part of the initial outer skin. Meant to fracture and angle Long rod penetrators. Any kind of backing is also better than no backing in making the last bit of armor material function as near as possible to its theoretical maximum as in an infinite stack of armor material. The cracks originated from the impact or the transition between steel and aluminium?
@dejmianxyzsimulations4174
@dejmianxyzsimulations4174 7 месяцев назад
I wouldn't say it was from the impact. Note that the aluminum provides poor support for the steel layer, which has barely been touched by the tip of the core and a bulge appears, i.e. the temperature weakening of the area. It reduces the pressure on the tip in the core axis, increasing the pressure from below.
