Ehhh, I dunno. I'm a Sega guy, and I frequently disagree with them giving SNES the edge in sound just because it can do sampling/instrumentation better (or should I say, more easily). Despite this advantage, the SNES sound chip often produces more hollow, softer/weaker music. I generally prefer the more robust, bass-filled electronic sound of the Genesis, considering these are video games, after all. *However* , in this particular instance, I think the SNES sounds better in every aspect. Whoever did the music on this game for SNES did a great job.
I liked the power gauge and the idea of pressing the soulder buttons to switch from foreground to background. Also, I enjoyed being able to play the heroes in their civilian as well as in their ranger forms.
I am surprised snes won the sound department.. While the snes music does sound better thanks to the superior sound chip.... The sega genesis had actual themes from the tv show and it sounded quite good!
You guys put a lot of work into your reviews even though your fan base isn't that big. I really like that your doing it for fun instead of just money. great review.
Sega had the best graphics. The SNES version made the characters too buff and they were simply the red ranger recolored multiple times. The Genesis had all of the proper rangers complete with their right sizes and helmets.
"The Sega Library of Farts" lol I hope one day someone officially compiles a Sega "fart: sounds I also agree with the verdict the Sega game was more Power Rangery than the SNES one.
"You're game looks like the show. My game looks like the movie!" ...the Power Rangers in the SNES version look like they're on steroids... but as always, you guys are hilarious ^_^
Yeah, the sound quality was better for sure on the SNES version, but the actual material and base tracks used for the Mega Drive version are much better than the generic SNES tunes. So each has something, which is why I would have personally given sound a tie.
KotCR I don't know man, Those Ron Wasserman tracks were part of the power ranger experience to me and I'm sure everyone else who lived through the 3 year white hot fad that was the show.
Um, The SNES sounds like a MIDI file, because that's how it's sound system operates. It plays back prerecorded ADPCM samples that are heavily compressed to fit into RAM. It's very similar sounding to early 90's MIDI. The Genesis uses FM Synth, so it sounds like FM Synth.
Usually when it comes to SNES vs Genesis Music/Sound, I prefer SNES since I don't really like the Genesis sound effects too much (but Genesis sounds do work amazingly well for Sonic games), but for this versus, I'm going with the audio of MMPR: The Movie on Sega Genesis because the music is based on Ron Wasserman's MMPR songs from the show. It's definitely not forgettable (as least not forgettable for me as I listen to the Power Rangers Redux album so many times).
I wouldn't say Sega's music was forgettable, it you was watching the PR show when this came out you KNEW it from the show, and it made the presentation all the better for it.
"My songs are worthy of the Megaman X library." "Well my songs are worthy of the Sonic library." Appropriate statements given that both franchises mentioned easily offer some of the best music on their respective consoles.
I will also throw out there you guys did once again an awesome job on this video loved the ending. Will say for sure you guys have earned your spot up in my top 5 favorite channels.
Agreed: it ACTUALLY followed the movie, there had 8-bit versions of the fighting songs AND you could even play as Jason, Zack and Trini for a time; what was there not to love.
You two are the absolute coolest man-kids ever. I could actually just see chillin with y’all. Love ur channel. LOVE IT!! Laughed so hard at this one.🤣🤣
@@gaba665 maybe you didn't read well, again, the soundtrack of the MMPR the movie, the game, in SNES, is one of the best, the other things like graphics, gameplay, etc, are better in the Genesis version of MMPR. Which is the fanboy part?
I noticed the subtle changes you made in the composition of the Power Rangers theme, changing just a few notes to avoid copyright but keeping it very similar, lol. It was a nice little cover version, I happen to know the song myself on guitar and have covered it live before with bands in the past :)
Sega overall has it under its belt, the game is much, much better and authentic on the Genesis. Graphic comparison is on par, with only deciding factor being details and on genesis it looks authentic look wise. Snes version, everyone is jacked up and too similar to one another in suit (notice how differentiated each character is on Gen). Sound too is amazing on Gen, not at all MIDI like as he said. You can hear the heavy thumping music and it follows the show/movie. It even utilizes proper sound fx. Snes version is just okay whereas Sega Rangers game is amazing!
Once again, you guys crack me up XD Love the part where at first Sega won best graphics, but then interrupted when saying that Nintendo wins Suggestion for a future episode: Bonkers
Best part is when he has to collect the batteries haha. Review both beavis and butthead games next if you guys have time. I think you two could pull off the beavis and butthead look too. (Not making an insult but the blonde hair, brown hair and couch would make it work)
I noticed something I'm not seeing anyone talk about here, so I'll share my thoughts. At 3:20 you mention that the sprites look better on the SNES. It's just my opinion, but I would have to disagree with that one. On the SNES, all the ranger sprites are just palette swaps of the Red Ranger. This is inaccurate as all the rangers have different subtle design differences, like helmets and added flare like the pink rangers skirt. Not to mention the Pink and Yellow ranger are supposed to be slightly leaner and less masculine than the others. The Genesis version has more accurate sprites. The most stand out features are the helmets. They all are drawn to look like the actual helmet. Not a criticism of your vid, just something I noticed.
Great show. Like what you guys are doing. Got a game suggestion....how about Phantom 2040? A cool action platformer that came out on both systems. Very similar but enough differences for an episode.
I think transforming is a good part of the snes version. The power rangers often fight as humans. They usually start an episode that way especially in the first couple of seasons. They usually switch. And it's more visually interesting. The characters look more varied and cool for it.
I agree, but I'd still rather Zord battles over unmorphed Power Ranger battles. That's why the original Power Rangers SNES game (not the Movie version), was so good - it had all three, and didn't have the clunky power meter.
nah after the first level you get tired of playing as the human form. It just sucks. if you buy a power rangers game you want to play as a power ranger. it doesnt make any sense. For that matter (if you wanna play as a normal human) they would have added a level dedicated to play like that, but after that all ... all the levels as power rangers. Collecting lighting bolts to be able to transform is idiotic. plus that change of paths you have to make with the L and R triggers is idiotic as well. I remember playing both games when i was a kid. and genesis version kicked ass
So i've never actually played ShadowRun before and have been considering which version to get. I hear that both are good, but also very different. You should compare the two so i know which one to play first.
Will you guys make an sort-of revised episode with the regular Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game (the ones that are based on the TV series, not the 1995 movie like this) since there's that new Power Rangers movie coming soon?
I've never played these games just the game gear one. I usually lean towards snes, but with this game I don't know which way to lean. Any advice from people who have played one or both.
I got a feeling that the Mega Drive one was made later so it linked up the show version of the same thing with the movie with Ivan Ooze added to the mix at the same time all in the single story. Don't forget they remade part of the movie without the Ooze bits for the start of the final series of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Original before the inferior versions like Zeo and onwards came in. Combining the 2 into something that links together is a pretty good touch.
WAIT! I just realized a PERFECT "Console Wars" game: "The Adventures of Batman and Robin". Much like these two and the "Aladdin" games they are two VERY different games with very awesome playstyles. Give them a shot, fellas.
6:55- That's not he main theme. That's the song that plays when the rangers call their Zords. The main theme plays during the first and last Zord fights, the cutscene before Stage 2, and during the credits.
Wow!!! After so many years i realised That the Soundtrack from the SNES Game is half from the First Power Rangers Game from the SNES and one Track is from Tmnt Tournament Fighters!
You know how you guys did a show with different games with final fight and streets of rage? Here's challenge. Do Mario vs Sonic with the games that came with the consoles back in the day. Deciding a winner would be an awesome review.
All of this is so true! Well, I know you guys basically gave music a tie, but having Go Green Ranger Go, Fight, 5 4 1, and Combat (the music from the show) gives the Sega version huge points in my book. I love those songs...the SNES music just gets boring. Keep up the great work!
Love both of these games, but my favorite of the two is definitely the Genesis version for sticking more to the traditional beat 'em up formula, and also for having music from the show. The optional Lord Zedd battle and being able to use the Zords are also icing on the cake as well.
I wasn't really a Rangers fan, but my little sister was huge into them. That being said, I never realized the pink ranger had a skirt until y'all just brought it up, lol
In the SNES version, if you want to play as the Rangers the whole time enter in the following code at the title screen: up, down. left, right, X, B, Y, A.
I actually prefered the gameplay from the SNES game but still like the SEGA game for actually being a movie game, and thinks it should have won default for being the only movie game.
I looked at the gameplay of the SNES VERSION and it looked tedious as hell. The fact that you had to collect little shards of lightening to power up your morpher is rediculous IMO. The putties take 2 hits to defeat whether morphed or "unmorphed" and last I checked, there weren't any putties in the movie. Just those Ooze henchmen, the vulture henchmen and Ivan Ooze himself.
This is something that always bugged me as a kid, Power Rangers - The Movie on Genesis is clearly the better game, I really hate the gameplay of the SNES one, graphics and sound is hardware limitation and the designers can't control it while gameplay is clearly a design flow which means the Genesis version could have been better had it been on the SNES, definitely Genesis version was better, AND WHY THE HELL DO I WANNA PLAY WITH A NON-MORPHED POWER RANGER? WHOEVER THOUGHT OF THAT WAS AN IDIOT!
I don't think complaining about getting the icons to turn into a Ranger was a good point against Nintendo. The characters over the course of the series began to rely less on the powers as they got stronger and more skilled. They were still trained martial artists who practiced their techniques at school. It got to a point where even Billy could fend off the standard mook without any trouble. Hell, in the movie, the Rangers not only started the first fight without morphing, they actually did lose their powers for most of the movie and had to prove their worth in order to get them back, so it ironically had more to do with the movie than the Sega version since you're permanently morphed in that version
It doesn't really matter.. we play the games to play as the Rangers not as the kids.. that's like playing as bruce wayne instead of Batman for the 50% of the game. its just not the same you know?
***** Bruce Wayne and Batman are practically two different people knowing him. Yes, we like playing as the Rangers. But you know something else? We also happened to like those kids behind the helmets. We aspired to be them or relate to them. You mean to tell me that there wasn't one kid out there who didn't want to be like Tommy? He was literally the first on-screen human character to fight off Putties well before he even got his powers.
***** "Yeah but my point was that do you want to play as the Bruce wayne or Batman?" For me, I don't really care "People want to play games as hero with superpowers." Bad analogy considering that the Arkham series, a highly-acclaimed and successful series, has you playing as someone who doesn't have superpowers (or at least, is not suppose to have any)
Noticed you were using a Genesis model 2 system in this video. Do you take your audio samples from the model 2? The Model 1 audio is known to be vastly superior to the model 2 Genesis. For head to head comparisons of Genesis Vs SNES, I would recommend using the original models of both systems as the Snes jr is known to have frame rate issues in certain games as well, may as well use the best version of both systems. Trust me , once you have listened to a Model 1 Genesis and Model 2 back to back, you will never go back to your model 2 Genesis.
It's really interesting seeing how many differences there are between two "ports" of the same game... if they only had different graphics would be one thing, but they are hardly the same game at all. The sound effects on the Sega version sound right outta streets of rage.
There were a lot of these for S-FAM, SNES and Mega Drive. The Fighting game would make an interesting wars too. The Mighty Morphin for SNES Vs Super Sentai for S-FAM Vs Mighty Morphin for Mega Drive would make a great 3 Way Dance but it would be unfair to the Mega Drive to have 2 Nintendo's unless it had it's own exclusive title to go 1 on 1 with Sentai.
The SNES game was okay, but the Genesis game was better. The SNES was more or less a re-hash of the other SNES MMPR sidecroller, had nothing to do with the movie and had had multi-colored red rangers. Yeah, in the original Zyuranger sentai, the yellow ranger was actualy a guy (hence no skirt), but, MAN. Since it's just a recolored red ranger over and over (look at the helmets), everyone's built like John Cena in the SNES version, even the girls! lol Also, while the SNES music wasn't bad and had superior sound effects, the music in the Genesis version is the Rob Wasserman score from the show! "Fight", "Combat", "5-4-1", Go, Green Ranger! Go!" and more all make appearances in the game. MMPR:TM a highly underrated game for the Genesis.
Even the original Genesis game did the ranger models better. While the blue, black, and yellow rangers are recolors of the red ranger, the pink and green rangers have different models
I came back to comment about how awesome the movie Mannequin is, and how cool it is that you guys have it on DVD. Its sequel wasn't so good, but the first is one of the best romance movies ever.
okay, in this case I DO think SEGA had the better graphics overall! While they use the same Sprites for 4 of the 5 Rangers, at least Pink had her skirt AND Helmet!! Not just white, like on Nintendo! Nintendo had all Rangers shared the SAME SPRITES as the red Ranger, just color swapped, except white ranger of course. It was not just that Kimberly missed her skirt, but she (and Aisha) were also BUFF as hell! Sure, they had their backgrounds are worse, but their Character Sprites were DEFINATELY better!
