@@ohioboy1878 Even then, Nintendo was giving the 3DS a ton of support until early 2019, EIGHT YEARS after its release and during the first few years of the Switch's lifespan. Hearing Scott laugh crazily at the idea of the Nintendo Switch outselling the PS4 is absolutely crazy to look back on now. The Switch really is the biggest comeback story we’ve ever seen in the gaming industry.
The reason it's called xbox is literally just because it was a box shaped console that ran using microst direct x a game programing software. And the original xbox was actually gonna be called the direct x-box. But was changed for marketing. I know you where just making a joke but figured I'd share something.
@@SmellinDSyrup also according to VGChartz the switch has almost sold 6 million for Q1 of the year making one of the best non-holiday quarters ever with the best being the 2007 DS selling a bit more so the next gen stuff hasn't even put a dent in it as the switch is tracking ahead of last year's numbers
@@SmellinDSyrup i know there have never been a 30 million calendar year as both DS 2007/2008 were like the mid 29 million and this one points to being ahead of the 2007 which starts off in the lead and only gets passed 2008 during the Holidays which means if you stay in front of the DS 2007 you will sell 30 million or more which 30 million on to 78 million which was what the switch was at with the start of the year that brings you to 108 million that is crazy
@AeonGaming X ok i dont know where you are getting your numbers but i reconmend you check them again because actually if you take when the ps4 launched and when the switch launch and put them together as the same to track how they are both doing the switch has been tracking above the ps4 for almost a year and a half taking. Over taking the ps4 in late 2019 and never looking back as it now has an almost 7 month lead over the ps4. Now while VGChartz isn't 100% accurate it does give a good ballpark and Nintendo hasn't updated their shipments numbers from jan-march which will come out near the end of April. As for the wii the switch has already crossed with it in its launched aligned meaning it will just overtake it on almost pure momentum as where they are now the switch has passed the wii's last big holiday before it crashes meaning it will do it for this year. The switch surprisingly has kept it close with the DS which is something almost no other console can say except the ps2 that was out on the market forever. The way it has been tracking it will hit the grand 100 this year as to go to that all you need is like 21 million to reach which it is going to blow pass because how the way it is selling it is currently the fastest selling year for a console ever as it is ahead of both the DS 2007 and 2008 and the switch 2020 which these years got very close to 30 million units for the calendar year and you are tracking in the quarter that usually sells the least. So with one quarter down the switch almost sold 6 million units while the ps4 has yet to sell 1 million so because the ps4 is barely limping trying to pass the Gameboy the switch is a bullet train
@@coinflipburp1565 Nintendo achieved something that Playstation didn't, and the switch is probably gonna get sold more than ps4, I mean currently right now Nintendo switches are literally sold out everywhere, you can hardly find one online.
I don't know how to tell you this but its a handheld not a home console. Case and point that new cheaper one doesn't allow tv out. Its a psp, its a game gear. Only difference sony and sega new that they were selling a handheld. And Nintendo new people were stupid and don't know the meaning of hybrid. Also Nintendo refused to call it a handheld due to wanting to keep try selling n3ds. So congrats for falling prey to what is essentially Nintendo's version of blast processing. You bought it hook line and sinker. Don't get me wrong I own a switch myself. Only difference is I knew what I bought a handheld with a tv out.
@@aidandonaldson3496 no didnt. Having a TV out doesnt make it a hybrid. Its modular. Modular doesnt mean hybrid. You can make a case that its audience is a hybrid because Nintendo stopped making a home console and said if you home console players still want to play Nintendo games then you have to buy this thus the audience is both handheld and home. But the console itself is just a portable, a handheld, a mobile. That is all. There is a difference between audience and the system itself being a hybrid. The audience is, the switch isn't. In order for it to be a hybrid the dock needed to have a CPU, a gpu and ram that the switch could take advantage of when docked. That would make it a hybrid. Just because it has TV out doesnt make it a hybrid. Just because its gimped in portable mode due to having a poor battery and a low res screen doesnt make it a hybrid. I mean congrats you fell for Nintendo's bullshit. How about that blast processing that Sega had huh? Majority of people know that's bs but I bet you also think that was a thing. A hybrid is two or more different things in one or can be combined in one. The switch doesnt use anything besides the system itself. The dock is nothing more than a glorified proprietary hdmi connector. There are modders that hacked the system that allows it to use the full power. It has way worse battery life but just showed it was a software limitation due to shitty battery life. The fact that this needs to be explained to you is sad. @Krish Shah well there's also stuff like the Crash N Sane trilogy ending up on both the Xbox One and the Switch, the Spyro Reignited trilogy on Switch, Cuphead being put on PS4 and Switch, etc., it's great seeing these three companies work together.
I think it will fall just short of the PS4 ultimately. Nintendo consoles, unlike their handhelds, don't have legs. The Switch is selling well now and will for a few years but I don't see it being huge in the fifth year of its life like the PS4. I would absolutely LOVE to be wrong, maybe with Nintendo using the engines of Zelda and Odyssey to make incredible sequels.
If you ask me Console wars lost all meaning after the 6th generation, and have just devolved into online shouting matches between people who take their brand loyalty a bit too far.
There is an objective truth to that. The Switch is just an off-the-shelf nVidia Tegra chip (can also be found in tablets) and the PS4/XB1 are both just running x86 PC-compatible hardware in a small(ish) box. Nothing separates this generation to anywhere near the degree of, say, the PS1 and N64, which handled every aspect of their existence in a radically different manner. Multiplatform titles were relatively uncommon and usually were developed entirely separately and as a unique game for each platform - mechanically identical crossplat ports are nearly nonexistent between PS1/N64. In other words, everything nowadays is just a fancy computer in a box. There are absolutely advantages and disadvantages worth discussing and there is no single obvious "best choice for everyone in existence", but at the end of the day they're a lot more alike than they've ever been.

Yeah, the Switch is just in the perfect situation. It's crazy how it has already sold about 75% of the PS4 lifetime sales, but has only been out for 4 years
A few years ago I was shocked to discover that the Ps1 slaughtered the N64 in sales. When I was a kid, /everyone/ had an N64 but I only knew two people with a Ps1. Tbh I'm still having trouble believing it since most the software on the N64 is just /so superior/ but then again so was the Gamecube's and I hardcore knew at the time they were coming in last. But, I have to say. The PS1/N64 time seemed like the most civil as far as console wars went. It wasn't nearly so intense as Genesis v SNES or the three-way GC v PS2 v Xbox
To be fair, the main reason why the N64's figures look so dismal is due to the system's utter lack of RPG's, making its install base in Japan pretty niche. If we're going by North American sales alone, the N64 had just over half the install base of the PS1. That number would've also been a fair amount closer if the PS1 hadn't been around until 2005.
Anyone who thinks the N64 library tops PS1 greats like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: SoTN, Final Fantasy 7 and Resident Evil 2 is straight up fanboying.

I personally think the Switch counts as a "ninth" generation console, but there's no other "ninth" gen consoles right now so it makes sense to put it up against the others.
Wii U launched a year early and was considered eighth gen. Maybe PS5 will come out in 2018, though we already know Microsoft confirmed the Scorpio is their last.

4 years later and the PS4 has sold 116 million with the Switch at 91 million and still going. It probably will outsell the PS4 at this rate. The pandemic really gave it a huge boost.

10:54 scott: “will it outsell the ps4? _pffffft_ *NO-”* nintendo switch 4 years after launch: _t-poses aggressively over playstation & xbox as it closes in on 80M units_
It seems pretty much guaranteed the Switch will outsell the PS4 now. The Switch is now at 85M Units and the forecast for the next year is 25M+ sold, which would put the Switch at 110Million Sold by March 2022. 110M is only 6M away from the PS4's 116M, and it's impossible for a console to sell 20+ Million one year and drop to less than 6M the next.
@@weathersponge5000 i wouldn’t say they’ll sell 25 million units this next year. after all, i read that last year they did about 28-30 million units, and last year was an exception because it was a literal plague year in which everyone needed a gaming console to take the edge off of quarantine. nintendo did exceptionally well in part because of the chaotic early period of the pandemic, and that can’t be replicated. i think it’ll do another 20+ million units this year and probably the next, but... yeah, that would still put it way past the ps4. at this point, the only console i don’t think it could pass would be the almighty playstation 2 (at a record 155 million units, as you may recall), but i could see it reaching 120-130 million lifetime sales by the end of its life, which may be as soon as 2023.

@@aijsdijdni3401 oh of course animal crossing was a huge factor aswell!! Others have said it, but his complete lack of confidence that the Switch could outsell the PS4 is amazing to look back on. It hasn't happened yet, but it's almost certainly going to happen before long. Granted, to say it'd sell this well back then would have been major wishful thinking at best. All anyone could have hoped was that it'd at least do better than Wii U.
Here's yet another look at how well the Switch is doing. After approx. 16 months, PS4 had sold 20.2 million units worldwide. As for Switch, the system has sold 19.67 million units in approx. 15 months. The PS4 did this with 2 holiday seasons, while Switch has gone through 1.
crazybillykook While there is some debate due to the new branding of the console. It is best considered for now that the Switch belongs to the first time ever half-generation tick or generation 8.5 next to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X
Arguably the second time it's been a half-generation tick. The second generation is really split in two. The first half consisting on consoles like Atari 2600, Intellivision, Bally, etc. The second half (Generation 2.5, starting 1982) consisting of Atari 5200 (a brand new Atari system), Intellivision 2 (which is the same system as Intellivision, but different model), the Astrocade (a rebranded Bally), and new systems like Colecovision
Agree with both The EndesCot and John Penguin the 3rd. There really is no exact science to the numbering of the generations. There was no mentioning of "generations" at all until like 5th or 6th gen. Hell, there wasn't even really a generation in which to compete in the 8-bit era. At least not in the US. It was Nintendo or nothing.
As with humans, generations are indistinct. I am technically a Gen Xer but only just, depending on what year you draw the line. We tend to define them as being in the same generation because they all came out around the same time. But as Nintendo showed a company can release a new product anytime they want. Sony could release the PS5 this year if they so choose. Microsoft could release the next Xbox in 2025 if that seems like a good plan. They just tend to stay aligned because that is good for competition. But there are no actual generation, just new hardware that is released more or less around the same time.
Goodness, the 8th generation was a bloody battle. Some of the patterns between the generations are really interesting to see tho. From marketing to business decisions. Neat stuff
@@ChescoYT That's unfortunately where you're wrong. Switch already has a HUGE advantage to PC, and that is portability. Not only is it the most powerful handheld gaming system of all time, it's exclusives have FAR more variety then the competition.
I don't think so because they are barely getting 3rd Party's to make games on the switch because everybody jumped ship after the Wii U. But the real kicker or the secret sauce I'm winning over people is to have games that interest the mature audience and games that rival Call of Duty and Battlefield, because without those and EA Sports games the Switch won't be having a good day.
