Solar Impulse is the only airplane of perpetual endurance, able to fly day and night on solar power, without a drop of fuel.
Solar Impulse challenge is to attempt the First Round-The-World Solar Flight in 2015. A way for Bertrand Piccard, André Borschberg and their team to demonstrate how pioneering spirit, innovation and clean technologies can change the world.

Interesting project. Would love to hear about the construction materials, methods, design, specifications, etc. Lots of pretty pictures here but not much info.

I can see a promising future in this concept for drones that can stay in the air indefinitely, and the R&D will benefit aviation as a whole in improving aircraft structures etc... but would we ever see the skies dominated by solar powered airliners? Even if solar cells were 100% efficient, you can only get so much energy from them, and it's not much. I just can't picture a solar powered plane taking paying customers across the Atlantic, with all the added weight of luggage, in flight meals etc really working out. In the future could we see more traditional airliners that are hybrid powered with the skins covered in solar cells? That would be interesting.

A fantastic Idea, I'm very happy about it, because I think that in the life you always have to try ad experiment new things, trying to push the limits! It makes me proud to be part of an AMAZING nation called Switzerland and that represent the success of our best Ideas! I see many things that can be made lighter, possibly as much as 350 Lbs. lighter or even more. The fuselage could also be made slightly wider and a little longer and still be lighter, but would allow room for more solar cells. The fuselage can also be much more aerodynamic and be made even lighter in weight. The use of all the brass fittings and connections can be lighter with aluminum or titanium fittings and connectors. Many of the screws and bolts are more than a half inch too long, shorter screws and bolts throughout the plane can significantly reduce the weight. I would have loved to have been involved with this project.

I am impressed with all that you have done and all that you have achieved. I wanted to point out that you can significantly trim down the weight. You can also add two or as many as eight small 400 to 600 Watt wind turbines that will give you more power, functioning at both day and night when there is no sunlight and will keep your batteries at full charge. You can do a lot with this Solar Impulse 2. I am most pleased to see the work you have done and I look forward to seeing improvements.

Hilarious you act like you have a better grasp of engineering then them claiming you can lower their weight on the craft while also recommending adding wind turbines lmao. You realize that the drag would counter act any energy produced from the turbine right?

Waiting for the finish and the next even greater project... A lighter then air (P-791 or DARPA Walrus form) but totally solar electric powered, with the ability to go around the world with 20 people non-stop a time ot two? What's next?

The day is not far, wherein we can see Solar Powered Flights of small sizes capable of carrying few people. There won't be any rotating machines required in the flight. The control system will interface with Human Thoughts and the flight would be controlled by human thoughts.
