Blenheim Palace shines in the Oxfordshire landscape - and the collections within are truly breathtaking. Not least the glorious portraits of Consuelo Vanderbilt, who married the 9th Duke of Marlborough in 1895. Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke is keen to find out more about the American women who married into the Spencer-Churchill family - all playing their part in the history of Blenheim.
The American heiress, Jennie Jerome had married Lord Randolph Churchill in 1874 - with their first son, Winston born at Blenheim. Julie visits the room where Winston was born and sees the sphinx sculptures of Gladys, the second American 9th Duchess of Marlborough in the stunning water terraces.

The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoffee.com/juliejmo...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.

Ok, maybe. You are doing a really good job. I have so much to tell you, I will never fit all of it into the RU-vid comment section. I don't need a therapist. I need a really good attorney that understands what is going on. I am a direct descendant of William The Conqueror. I am the eldest child of two eldest children, and the heiress to both of these men's estates; Hermann Lloyd Schiess and William Sommerville Boulton. My sister is, among many other family members, attempting to kill me and steal the estate from me. She and my family have already stolen a great portion of this estate from me. Studying history is not just a hobby for me. The information in your video's have the very real potential to save my life. My family lied to me. They removed information from my copy of our family tree to try to obscure my relationship to the British Monarchy. The copy that I do have shows a very clear family relationship to all the Kings and Queens of England, Ireland and Scotland. Sometime in the last three years, they stole my copy of our family tree and removed William The Conqueror's name from it to try to hide my relationship to him. They also posted information in a RU-vid video that Prince Edward, Queen Elizabeth's son, and brother to King Charles, is in love with me. Then shortly after that, they posted to RU-vid images of someone that had impersonated me as she rode a horse, apparently to manipulate Prince Edward into believing she was me.

As a relatively lonely kid who frequented our town library, I remember repeatedly borrowing books about all of these grand places in the UK. Our Scottish great-great Auntie was my best friend as a girl, so i was fascinated and hooked. Blenheim Palace still has a place on my must-visit-someday list. 💕

If this place was done very frugally, I can't imagine if money was no issue! Love that Sara left such amazing records too, she knew where every coin was spent. Having the Queen sign the records? That's incredible! It truly shows every generation has added & conserved what was done before them.

Enjoying this brilliant episode while my husband watches hockey, that I could care less about! Thank you Julie for an extraordinary episode! ❤ Julie, thank you for talking about mental health! I think more people need to! My husband and his parents just don't understand depression and anxiety. They think you can just 'snap' out of a sad mood! They think it's wrong to take medication for such things! I think it's wonderful! If a person needs help, then, get it! There's no shame in talking about things you're going through; your depression; stress, etc. I mean, if you break a leg; need surgery; have an illness, etc., you don't think twice about asking for help. Why is getting mental help any different! Talk to someone; journal; talk to a Pastor; you're not alone! We're also a 'family' on here! Much love and many hugs to whoever reads this! You ARE loved and wanted! ❤

The more I learn about Sarah Churchill, the more just badass she sounds. She was a woman in a world that men ruled land, but a Queen ruled the kingdom.

I visited Blenheim in 1975 when I was seven years old and my dad was in the US Air Force and stationed in Upper Heyford. I've never forgotten it. It was my favorite memory of living in the U.K. I've been back in the US since 1976 but would love to go back & see it in person again (as well as visit Mapperton!)

I love all of your videos about Palaces, stately homes, and historical places in the UK. This also helps all of those regal places as a kind of commercial advertisement to inspire people to visit them. I would love to visit many places in the UK, but since I cannot make it, these videos open a window to them for me. Thank you for all you do Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

I absolutely loved this episode and learning about the preventative conservation that Blenheim has to endure daily and annually. I can’t even imagine how long it took to conserve 10,000 books! I hope the tapestries inspired you to get the Mapperton tapestries conserved soon. I did a big cheer when she said they rehung the tapestries with velcro instead of on brass rods! 👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you, Julie! My sister & I visited Blenheim (May 1, '24). It was stunning, despite a British fashion exhibit that obscured a clear view at times. (New roofs need $, I know). Your tours are a delight, taking viewers where tourists can't go. Thanks for letting us in, from Mapperton to other historic homes. Best wishes for continued success -- and more videos!

I am so excited about this video. I had no idea Winston Churchill was the son of a Vanderbilt family member. I watched a free RU-vid video on Gloria Vanderbilt about five years ago. It was really hard to watch. Ms. Gloria Vanderbilt has had a lot of stress in her life. I understand that newscaster Cooper Anderson is her son.

Julie, Paul Maze was very close to various members across generations of the Spencer-Churchill family. Prior to WWII and after Consuelo Vanderbilt divorced the 9th Duke and married Jacques Balsan, Maze and Churchill often painted at the Balsan's home Château de Saint-Georges Motel in France. I believe Maze may have lived/set up a studio on the Balsan's French estate for some period During WWII Maze left France and lived at a rural property in England owned by Consuelo's younger son Ivar Spencer-Churchill, brother of the 10th Duke of Marlborough. In 1979, Ivar's son (Consuelo's grandson) Robert William Charles Spencer-Churchill married Jeanne M. Maze, daughter of Etienne Maze and granddaughter of Paul Maze. Contact me for other details

Ive read Consuelas book, she wrote her memories of life at Blenheim and being a Duchess, later in life when after WW2 she was living in France and married to someone she liked. A wartime Resistance Hero. I dont believe a word of that story of Winston being born at Blenheim,an accident. I think Jennie totally intended for her son to be born at the Grand Family Palace. I think she was full term and knew it and was really pretty brave to the risk of a journey in a horse carriage then dancing for hours in order her son be born in such auspicious circumstances. The government appointed Sir John Vanbrugh. Sarah Churchill kept sacking him and the government reappointing him.

It’s best practices for any paper archives (ancient books, etc) that using clean, bare hands is the best. There were far too many accidentally torn pages happening when archivists used gloves. So this is the widely used practice now.

The Orangery is ghastly, tasteless and vulgar absolutely destroyed and done by people without any sense of how it was meant to be. It's like the National Trust have asked someone to come in and design tasteless tap for 20th century council estate.
