What makes this more interesting is that during production, they wanted to be as scientifically accurate as possible when describing the disease, its origins, and potential impacts. It proved to be rather prescient.
@lolmao500
@lolmao500 Месяц назад
The only thing they couldnt predict was the number of pro-death anti-vaxx assholes that there were... covid killed a whole bunch of em, hundreds of thousands in the US alone, if it had been deadlier probably tens of millions would have died... all because of trumps bullshit and the republican propaganda news... pushed by facebook and twitter... and zero criminal charges have been brought against them for literally murdered hundreds of times more people than bin laden ever did.
@ISavant

Not really prescient. I'm not even 40 and there have been at least 3 pandemics in my lifetime. swine flu pandemic was in 2009, sars in 2002-04.

@daerdevvyl4314
@daerdevvyl4314 Месяц назад
georgeheilman4243 Levels of panic aren’t proportional to death counts. It has more to do with media causing the perception of huge death counts. The Spanish Flu killed around 1% of the world’s population, and there was less panic than with CO*ID. And every couple of months the media predicted imminent disaster in Florida, going as far as to give Gov. De Santis the nickname of Death Santis. But when the huge death tolls didn’t happen (repeatedly), media figures never apologized or admitted that they’d been wrong.

Jen's right that living through COVID causes us to view this movie with a sense of personal experience. It's also scary to consider how modern transportation helps spread infections out of the 'hot zone.'
@StayProteus
@StayProteus Месяц назад
Not only that but also the fact that next time people won’t react as severely/quickly because the boy already cried wolf so it’ll probably spread far more before most containment efforts begin to be implemented. Also there was a leaked video back around 2021-2022 of a Chinese general giving a speech in private to a small group (if I remember correctly, I haven’t been able to find it since then) and in it he said something very similar/to the effect of ‘the best weapon would be one that would only affect the biological markers for the demographic of your enemy and one they will spread themselves and which will cause their unconditional surrender solely in exchange for the cure only you hold’…. Again I’m paraphrasing because again I haven’t been able to find the video since then and I’ve asked around and others online remember it but don’t have the link so I may search for it again later but if memory serves me correctly then I looked into for a long time back then and it all seemed to be a real general who was actually over something like a biological testing department or something to that effect so while it could easily still be fake it’s odd that I’ve never seen it again even when I’ve looked and the only mentions of it don’t mention it being fake or anything so I’d assume it was real and just got quietly taken down. In other words yeah we may be in for a rough ride because COVID could’ve been a test run that was purposely overreacted to in order to cause less panic and less containment when the real threat emerges or based on that general’s statement is released and that theory seems more likely things start to make when you think about things like how China reacted the strongest to Covid and if you really put on the gun foil hat and game everything out assuming it was intentional and assuming something worse is coming then it all sort of makes sense. The only issue I can see is that their economy is dependent on ours in a way so there would also have to something else to factor in to replace us economically

@@lucianaromulus1408 She didn't really have much to act with in this film, she's basically just acting out a seizure, and it's not like there isn't a ton of reference material on the subject or likely experts on set to advise her on getting it right, so she didn't just act this out from scratch. Marion Cotillard and Kate Winslet both made a better showing IMHO.

@mnomadvfx

To be fair I think it was later reasoned out that survival rates depended largely on weight and preexisting medical conditions even among seniors. Age tends to bring problematic medical conditions, but then it also tends to cause people to become lazy and put on weight too - so it's a bit of a double whammy.

The soundtrack by Cliff Martinez was one of the best things about this movie. Steven Soderbergh is one of only a handful of directors who are not at all averse to bucking tradition to go with an electronic soundtrack. Cliff Martinez has actually scored most of Steven Soderbergh’s projects. A couple that I would recommend are the film “Traffic” about drug cartels and the cable series “The Knick” about the early days of surgery at the turn of the century (seems like an unlikely candidate for an electronic score, I know…). Both have soundtracks with a similar flavour to this film.

Hey Jen! I think you would really love the music of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross. They compose the soundtracks for The Social Network, Gone Girl, and the new Ninja Turtles movie to name a few!!! :)

I remember seeing this. It always tripped me out with the banality of the whole process, but it sparked an interest in virology, and microbiology in general. Give it 8.5 years later and I wrote my first paper on the threat of biological warfare, and pandemics in general. 4-6 months later and I got to experience the movie first hand, almost play by play. I even got the virus in the final days of the "it's still outside of US borders, no need to worry" BS, and almost died. The screwed up part is that my paper was spot on. The not so spot on part was that I expected a "my fellow Americans, let our hearts go out to the 1.5 million dead" speech, but I guess pretending it never happened works too.

Magic Reaction , and your 3rd reaction to a virus outbreak should be The Andromeda Strain , its a great movie with a good story, and not to much gore .. and has a twist.

Because this is a great film about a pandemic and you are a cool Canadian, I recommend another great pandemic related work w/a Canadian connection; The book Station Eleven written by Canadian Emily St. John Mandel came out in 2014 and was turned into a mini series starring another cool Canadian: Mackenzie Davis. I highly recommend both. ✌🤟🤘

Jen: I like that guy... he'll probably die. X) That's how it usually goes with movies like this! Lol Yeah, it was weird when covid first started ... I couldn't get this movie out of my head. I listened to all the warnings and did all the things they suggested because I'd seen this movie and took it very seriously. No, Kate knew one of the housekeeping staff had gotten her sick and was still working to track down the infected and isolate them to prevent the spread of the disease. That's why she wanted a list of names of everyone who'd cleaned her room. ;) It's pretty much the case that there are always some people who are naturally immune to any new disease out there. Humanity could have easily died out long ago if we didn't have such wild variations in our immune responses. What works to defeat one virus will kill you with another one, so it's good that we're a hodge podge of reactions to disease; it increases the overall chance of survival for our species as a whole. It's been 4 years since covid started. To date, 3 out of 4 people have had covid at least once. We're so fortunate it's not as lethal as the disease in this movie. This movie really captured what a pandemic would be like before it had even happened in modern times. Loved your reactions to this one, Jen! And I agree ... pigs are cute! :)
