My dad worked in shipping all his life and arranged for me to work on Hapag Lloyd's Main Express as a deck hand when I was 18 years old. We sailed between Oakland, via Long Beach, Panama, to Felixstowe on a trip that took just under a month. Your videos bring back some amazing memories so thank you for sharing.

The scenes on the bridge reminded me when I finished my shift, closed down the club and after all it was late and I had something like 4 hours to go before docking and having a 2 week leave, instead have a few hours of sleep, I made myself a sandwich, settled down, got my uniform off, a shower and getting civilian clothe on and hung out at the bridge. Seeing the day break as we reached the argipelago of Stockholm was always a treat. As we reached the port, I grabbed my gear, drove home and sleep over the day. Funny, how the toassed time becomes a piece of nostalgia.

Another great video! I think it is great to see what people do at work, without goofing off like you see on those shows on Discovery and channels like that. Great video again Jeff, like your shots how the ship is moving thrue the water! I saw it before but i am allways suprised how much a ship is flexing, i know as an engineer it must otherwise the ship will breake up, but very fascinating how much stress the construction of a ship can take! Wow. Amazing stuff, both mesmerizing and kind of frightening. I've actually been in the North Atlantic in seas like that. But, I'd be pretty freaked out seeing the ship flex like that. I realize the ship is probably designed to do that. But, man... Also, good thing I wasn't exposed to videos like this at an early age or I probably would have joined the merchant marine right out of high school and be out there right now. Wow.

I know I'm going to get the safety sally label here, but I would think a Union trade would have more safety awareness than that. Especially on the high seas where medical and fire rescue is not available. You need to wear safety glasses under your helmet as sparks can rebound around inside your helmet. Also when you clean hot slag off your welds. You should also have a fire watch with you with an extinguisher in hand. You had a lot of flammables near you, especially that rope. Also, you are in a confined area, so ventilation is important.

Great job on the video, I like the Laird Hamilton reference ! How often are these ships painted ? Keep the vids coming.

Generally they get painted in the shipyard at least the Hall of the ship and maybe some other area and the small crew tries to maintain the best they can but going to the North Atlantic especially in the winter months there's not much you can do outside for decks
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
But these ships generally have to be removed from the water in a dry dock every 5 years for a shipyard. Of maintenance

Having been there and done that, watching to ocean as the ship sales is about as interesting as watching grass grow.

Great video. How much does a large ship rock in heavy seas? For instance, do you ever have trouble keeping your feet under you, or does the sheer mass of the ship dampen that?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
Great question entry answer especially in the winter time in the North Atlantic which my ship goes to the Seas can get pretty bad sometimes and you find yourself walking pretty crooked and you have to be very careful and go slow and hold onto things but we have fin stabilizers that do help a lot

Also go to the very end of this video I took a few moments to show how the ship actually flexes when it's rolling around it's cool to see I think it's in the last minute of this video

I know it can’t be helped, out on the ocean, I noticed rust developing, how often is that addressed, chippers and scrappers, who does that, is there a specific crew who does that?
@marcusbishop6124
@marcusbishop6124 3 года назад
That’s mainly work for the Deck Dept. which consist of the OS-Ordinary Seaman which is a step before becoming and AB- Able Body Seaman. But those 2 sets of individuals do the chipping and painting of the rust and preservationist things on the deck.

On this video at 08:57 It looks like you have a radio antenna that appears to have come loose. It's just above the tuner. Check it out, may already have been fixed. C.Wade

What is your job position on the ship? Are all the cabins the same size as yours?

shipmate, I heard that a merchant vessel has Deck and Engine departments....is there any equivalent of an Electronics Technician in the Navy, who concentrates on electronics? A lot of what you're doing here is the job of "A-Gang" on a submarine (I was on a submarine)...A-Gang because they are "Auxiliary Machinist Mate" (as opposed to nuclear machinist mate); they deal with all the non-nuclear machinery such as as the diesel backup engine, the high pressure air compressors, the ship service hydraulic system, etc. Whereas I was a STS, sonar technician submarines. I operated sonar as my main job (though I did many other things since there are only 120 people on the boat). So do you guys have specialties like that? Or is it really just Deck does everything forward of the Engine Room and Engine does everything in the Engine Room?

That ships that go where that is a threat absolutely do they have a security team that comes on board prior to the high-risk area however my ship only goes to USA and Europe Transit there is no pirate threat
