Well this is the next video in this vlog series and it is footage from when we were on the European side. I always try to make videos from my point of view and now overproduce. I just try to make it real and let you all come along with me in my day to day life on the ship so I hope you enjoy it. I always love to hear your comments and suggestions and I would always love to meet up with you guys when I have free time in port....I hope you all have a great new year 2019. I posted some video from how I spent New Years Eve here on the channel so check it out. I am also just lately on Twitter so connect with me there. TWITTER @jeffs_vlogs
To contact me email at jbull68@gmail.com and allow time for me to reply....I am always on the go...

Your videos are so great, unlike made for tv documentaries, you show things they don't and really stay on the image so we can see it. I am so happy I found your channel, thank you for doing a great job, I could watch these all day....../cheers from Florida, Paul

I liked that. It brings back memories of ships and Harbors, to an old seaman from times before the ultra big container vessels. I like the fact that these videos have been brought about by a mariner.

Having been on the shore side of Fischtown, they have a lot of wind turbines they move through the area. South of the container terminal where this was filmed, further to the south, south of the old Fischereihaven, is where they store the turbine parts. This would be in the direction of the Ikea that is south of town. These turbine parts can probably be seen via Google Earth. Having driven by the parking lots where the blades are stored, the sheer size of them is impressive. In looking at Rostock's docks, I have seen similar collection lots around their harbor when viewing it via Google Earth. Thanks for sharing what happens on the docks at "Fischtown's" container haven. Elvis went through this port when he was active, BTW.

BTW, those guys are correct. They are bottom sections of wind turbines. I saw some in Galveston Bay a couple of months ago. When on land they usually white but if they're are on a piling in navigable water they must be painted that certain way.

Really fun to see other parts of the world from a crew perspective. When you were sailing into Rotterdam, it reminded me alot of Galveston where you can see ship after ship lined up offshore just waiting to get into the Port of Houston, which I'm pretty sure you've been to since our city is a major stop for all container ship companies and Maersk has offices near where I live here in Spring/Woodlands area of Southeast Texas.

I thought I recognized those cranes. Deurganckdok Antwerp. The lock (Kieldrechtsluis) is the largest in the world atm. I used to be a cargo planner for container ships. Fighting with the chief over reefer positions was always fun. These days I supervise the administration for a bunkercompany there. Thanks Jeff! Love the day in the life footage. Really interesting! One of the tug captains in Antwerp has some great vlogs here too. One quick question. I follow JeffHK too and he was on a OCCL ship and they always seemed to be painting and the ship looks pretty much like new. I noticed some of the MAERSK ships look a bit more worn. Are there major differences in the companies with respect to ongoing maintenance? Thanks!
@JeffOnboard
@JeffOnboard 5 лет назад
A couple things come to mind and just a guess. First is maybe because they do not always give enough overtime to the deck crew to maintain it and it takes a lot of hours....I notice this a lot and there are just 3 guys on deck all day and much more work to do than deck maintenance. Another thought is the ships all go to different places...example...We on my ship go to northern Europe, A lot of the year the weather does not permit deck maintenance, and just on the last trip I did coming home the weather was so bad we were not even supposed to be on deck unless necessary and had a radio to communicate. Some ships are on runs with better weather so they can do that work basically always....another idea is maybe some other ships the wages are much lower and they let the crew work much more overtime (OT) These are just some of my ideas for why....

I see the ship now in The Gulf of Mexico on my Findship App, from Houston to Antwerp, so you make nice trips,., maybe one day I bring provisions on board, or you take provisions in Houston????, I work in the operational side of the shipchandling as a driver cq. representative tto bring all kinds of stores on board ships like you sail on., mostly in Holland and Belgium ports,., we are in Rotterdam located,. , Maybe those pipes on that floating ponton are pipes for the windpark s outside the coast,., on the top of that comes the windrotor s , ,,., but not sure , maybe it s something different.

@redc8783
@redc8783 3 года назад
When bunkering how’s many tanks do you fill at a time m Navy days for JP-5 are tanks where a nest of 6. We would have 6 to 8 nest open at a time. Of the 6 tanks one would be the overflow for the group the other 5 where connected to the over flow which had an over board discharge. In port we were limited to 80% and 90% at sea. No liquid indicators sound as. We filled. Lots of compartment spills if the sounding crew was screwing around. Back in the 60’s you could get away with some spills in the bays. Course we loaded at se @ 3200 GPM

Jeff, first thanks for the video. Why you need 2 types of fuel on board as you were mentioning. Second at around 4th min of the video saw that ship mooring and propeller runs bit faster than I thought, Why is that?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
Well the reason for two types of fuel is because one is ultra low sulfur which is burned around the coastlines in Europe and USA for environmental reasons your second question the propeller of that ship looks like it's going faster than it is because the ship is sitting light so it's throwing a lot of water up as it spins giving it the appearance of going faster than it is

Why do you get low sulfur fuel and regular fuel? Do you use regular for open ocean and low sulfur when you get near ports or is it something totally different?
@danrose2517
@danrose2517 5 лет назад
There are emission control areas around most of the continents where you have to use low sulfer fuel oil. In 2020 all ships will have to burn diesel or use exhaust scrubbers with fuel oil.

Jeff, How do they turn the crank shaft slowly like for inspection?
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
I have another video that will be coming out soon that I actually show where the gear is engaged but basically there is a small turning gear driven by a motor and a push button controller to Go reverse or forward and you use a hand lever to apply the small gear to the big large planetary gear that is on the main shaft just after the engine and you can control it with the hand controller reverse or forward in very slow speed it is called a jacking gear or also turning gear
@jefferyb.3406
@jefferyb.3406 5 лет назад
And the little push button controller has a very long cable that you can actually take up an inside the engine with you allowing you to control it as you are looking or doing a piston ring inspection Etc

The spreader task is computerized? Or is a man operated?
@xLyskex
@xLyskex 5 лет назад
It's man operated, at most terminals the crane man sits in the crane, others like APM rotterdam are operated from a distance at the office on the quay.

@@terryayers9653 Can: Yes, being allowed to: no. Bc the three Operators set it in their rules, reasons are maybe because of tracking containers, or when an accident happens, they are mostly "special" like the MSC Zoe with many destroyed containers

@@JeffOnboard It's also not allowed in Antwerp unless you have permission. To prevent companies spying on each other, and to prevent footage from when stuff goes wrong etc
