Good video neem and soap works great for me. Dr. bronner is a good choice for organic soap to use. I think Luke forgot to mention that you want to spray your plants either in the morning or evening to avoid mid-day sun that could burn your plants after spraying.

Interesting, I've never seen anybody saturate the plants and ground with so much neem mix - usually, it's just a spray coating on tops and bottoms of leaves. I might try coating the soil at some point. But I wanted to add that if you toss in a tablespoon of baking soda to that mix, you can use it to combat blight at the same time.

Great video! Wish we has used this type of product last year, where we were over-run by caterpillars in the late summer and fall. Question, what is your recommendation on spraying Neem Oil on fruiting and flowering pepper plants? Our concern is that by spraying now, we will hurt our chances of new peppers forming, and that neem oil will be absorbed into the peppers that are developing.

I seen a video, where u said u do not use neem oil in July and August, due to the very hot temperatures. What would u suggest to be used for aphids on cantaloupe and watermelon vines in temps reaching 100 degrees here in Oklahoma? Also, what about grasshoppers coming into my garden and getting on my cucumbers? I would rather not use Seven liquid concentrate, but the infestarion of grasshoppers in Oklahoma are very bad this year. Can't even walk out the door without them jumping everywhere, by the hundreds!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also neem oil is non toxic to all pollinators? I was worried about bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Btw, Luke do you get butterflies and hummingbirds in your food garden or do you have a seperate pollinators section for them?
@MIgardener
@MIgardener 7 лет назад
Neem oil is not toxic to bees or beneficial insects because they must ingest the neem oil and so assuming you sprayed the flowers ans soaked the pollen it "could" hypothetically hurt them, but the chances are very slim.
@gardenher8361
@gardenher8361 7 лет назад
olive4naito - You definitely don't want to apply neem oil when any pollinators or beneficial insects are present, as it can suffocate them from being sprayed, but you don't even want beneficial insects to come into contact with treated plants. Because when the insects groom their feet they will ingest the neem oil, that has been documented as a contraceptive even for insects. Even beneficial insects like lady bugs eating aphids that have been treated will halt reproductive egg laying of the ladybug, causing population decline of beneficial insects. Which isn't helpful to balance ecology, especially considering lady bug larvae are voracious feeders of aphids. Pollinators that aren't in large colonies of social insects, are also at risk of reproductive failer. A honey bee hive typically won't be affected unless enough of the hive population came into contact with the neem oil, even on their feet, to create enough contamination of their honey supply, to actually reach the queen. Which the queen is the only reproductive female active in most hives. That said it definitely isn't good for the longterm ecology of honey bees, if hives were exposed to enough of the oil, through everyone using it. As though the queen typically mates for a short time early in her youth, then maintains that fertility. To maintain healthy bee populations still requires lots of fertile drones to create a strong well bread queen, and other hives newly hatched queens require those drones being fertile. Overall anything that is indiscriminate, and acts as a broad spectrum contraceptive, won't be good for the long term ecology of any ecosystem. Especially an ecosystem where we're trying to create balance in an already deprived system for the benefit of sustainable organic gardening.

GARDEN HER Wow, thanks and sorry for the slow reply. For some reason RU-vid doesn't notify me on the site of replies to messages. I'm seeing replies in my email (the one I never use) three months later. The plant nursery near my home actually stopped stocking neem oil and staff told me that all import of neem oil has been banned in Canada. Since my plants are all indoors, I ordered some from Amazon, but I'm worried because they are herbs I eventually want to eat. These reproductive effects sound pretty serious but will they affect humans the same way?

I have looked for information on where aphids actually come from and still don't know! I never understand why everyone says to spray them off so they are off the plant and will die. They climbed up there in the first place, huh? The reason I ask is because in Texas, aphids are ridiculous... and of course, the ants too!
@LauraBeeDannon

Ants will actually put them on your plants. They farm them. Aphids ride on the wind. They are small and have tiny wings.

Aphids are soft bodied insects. The force of water kills them. That is why some people try controlling them first with water from a garden hose with an adjustable nozzle.

The plant nursery near my home actually stopped stocking neem oil and staff told me that all import of neem oil has been banned in Canada. People here can still order off Amazon though... (no comment) I have a question because in europe neem oil is forbiden in organic culture because il kills bees :/ (no answer from MI) Will need hurt frogs? I have random frogs that will come visit me but they don't seem to be around enough to actually help with my aphid problem (no answer again) will neem kill bees or ladybugs? (no reply) I don't think your doing YT organic garden community by spreading misinformation and support an obviously harmful product for your own benefit. At the beginning of the video you state you are experiencing a drought in the middle of spring. Has it ever occurred to you that the increase in online purchases from over seas and increased production of such materials are increasing the greenhouse gas effect. It's obvious you give 0 f's when it comes to the planet just business as usual for you. No real organic gardener would ever use such unsustainable potentially dangerous materials in their gardens. Most of your videos are rubbish and I've never seen anyone waste so much breathe to spread so little useful information. Aren't you the organic gardener I saw getting the rails for driving a fancy sports car lol. IMHO your full of it!
