In need of something to animate at my free time at home, I came with the idea of taking a small wood puppet and modify it to become a truly animatable figurine to perform animation, lets say everything, I want to animate a proper and funny dance.

Thank you this is very helpful! To anyone struggling with the glued in bits, you can use a heat gun to melt the glue and they come right out without prying or damaging the wood!

I just got home with a 10" or so little friend, just like that one, only with stretched out elastic cord, and about three times the size. Now I'm gonna head out to find some aluminum wire. Thanks!

Phoenix King That’s what I was thinking too. I use these for my illustration work but get so frustrated by its restricted poses. I’m definitely going to adapt mine. Great video, so clever and resourceful :)

This is really cool , I already have a bunch of these Made in PRC wooden manikins acquired for just this purpose . I also use ' poseable ' action figures ( I buy whole bunches in big box store toy dept sales )and make my own puppets using wire armatures with air dried clay , then I use coloured Plasticine /Sculpy to make clothes , fingers etc

This is wonderful! I’m not exactly a stop-motion maker, but I do enjoy using marionettes! This feels like an excellent jumping-off point to adjusting a massive mannequin a cousin just gifted me.

This is awesome. I was fiddling with my wooden mannequin and one of the arms popped out and I was freaking out out because I couldn't get the wire into the joint properly but now I see an awesome opportunity to make a better mannequin 🤩 off to the supply store I go!

i've been trying to find this video again for so long. this is great because i want to make most of my stop motions with these mannequins. i like the way the arms and head moves, but the legs are awful, the part that attaches to the hip is the part that needs to change the most

I'm not a stop motion animator, but this rigging is so much better even for it's intended purpose. What's the point of using a wood mannequin for art reference if it can't even hold a realistic human pose? Tempted to do this to my own mannequin now.

I will be testing it but, this aluminium normally lasts up to 20 turns at same point, something imposible with steel. Braiding changes it's properties but for stop motion animation is usefull as you feel when one of the wires brokes, so you have the chance to end the shoot with extrem caution.

Hey, I’m trying to do something similar with my manikin, and I was wondering, how did you get the stand out? The pole and based that holds the manikin up, how did you take that out? I see that you used pliers in some way but I’m trying something similar and mine is giving me a tough time

Hello dear. Great one. But once question! How did you fix that thigh ball into the hip socket? I mean mine is quite loose. Any rubber gum would help? I'm in lock down. Can't get aluminium wire. Can i use copper? It's going to be my first stop motion video by the way. Love.

It is not forever, aluminium wire allows around 20 bends depending on how hard the angle is.

He intentado hacer este tutorial (solo con uno de los brazos) pero creo que mi maniquí tenía una junta diferente en el codo y era demasiado complicado de montar 🥲 Tenía dos muelles pequeños y para sustituir uno de ellos tenía que enroscar el alambre por dentro del antebrazo, no ha habido manera XD Todavía no he podido separar las piernas, creo que probaré lo que sugieren en uno de los coments. ¡Actualizaré si consigo arreglarlo! Si no, buscaré un modelo como el de Edu (el mío era imantado).

Hola! Hmmm....un tip, ¿Por que no tratas mejor de hacer las piezas del cuerpo con cartón o papel?, con la pintura adecuada, al momento de filmar no se notará si es papel o madera, y menos si lo usas cómo endo-esqueleto para muñecos de plastilina, tela, etc. También se le puede sacar el molde a la pieza, (via silicón/maizena, alginato, papel aluminio/papel/pegamento, etc), y así debe ser más fácil armarlo.
