I have a manifold that you put right on your 20# propane tank. (I'm old and we used to call them 5 gallon tanks) Then I have hoses that attach to this manifold that power, 1 my Coleman stove, 2 my propane bbq and 3 at the top I have two Coleman lanterns hooked up that will really light up your whole camp site. I love it!

I had an experienced (old timer) camper tell me years ago to just use any unleaded gas, which is basically what white gas is. I tried it and it worked fine. Did that for many year till I was given a propane stove. Since unleaded is the only gas available at most places, the same gas can that fills up your lawnmower (unless it is an old 2-stroke) can run your stove.
@seymourwrasse3321
@seymourwrasse3321 2 года назад
back in the day a lot of old timers would use regular gas which will end up ruining the generator, but back then the gas was so much cheaper then coleman and the part was cheaper, they just replaced the generator. I have a 1940's PREWAY 2 Burner Camp Stove Model P4521-A my parents bought when they married in '46, I am going to convert to propane for grins and giggles

MY ADVICE: if you use your stove to boil water and quick cooking items for 1-2 people= use the propane converter. BUT if you use the stove for longer cooking(chili cookoffs, stews, roasts) or cooking for 2+ people use the white gas, it is WAY cheaper! the propane converter also wastes alot of propane too as the stove isn't optimized for it

You can buy adapters and hoses to connect a 20 lb. ( or smaller) refillable propane tank to anything made for the ripoff disposable containers ($3 - $4 for one pound of propane -- you've got to be kidding me.). If you use a re-usable tank and buy the propane from a retail bulk supplier (or even the tank exchange suppliers, which are more expensive than filling you own tank, but still way cheaper than the throw aways), it's quite a bit cheaper than Coleman fuel and comparable to gasoline.

I am done with propane stoves after going on a scout troop outing for snow camp, waking up in the morning after snow and 10 degree temps, and the propane cooking equipment is frozen. Coleman fuel is made for being stored & can last many years, and gasoline will lose its potency if stored for many years. Let a vehicle sit for 4 years, come back and siphon it out, and you will see its bad gas...

I found gun oil will seal any leaks in the pump. keep it wet even in stoarge. Second, white gas is cheaper and lasts longer. you can even use any gas excuding mixed gas ...found out the hard way!. @russlehman2070
@russlehman2070 3 года назад
The Coleman stove is made that way, because if you're using liquid fuel, the fuel needs to be vaporized to burn efficiently, and having the "generator" heated by the burner helps vaporize it. There is no need to do this when running propane from a vapor draw, and stoves that are designed for propane don't run the propane line through the burner flame.

Good video, this would be a great backup to have. My only concern (if it is a concern) is the propane has to travel inside what will be a red hot tube before making it to the burner. The propane is traveling as a gas, so flow shouldn't be an issue I guess. Does the propane change properties once super heated before making it to the burner? As we know the original white gas system uses the burner to atomize the fuel before reaching the burner. The system was never designed to run propane in the same manner. But maybe is doesn't matter.

Another thing to consider...A couple months ago, we had a power outtage in our area for several days! My house kitchen stove would work on the range top, but has to be lit with a match of course...but the oven and broiler would not work because they have to have power to come on. So I looked around and found an old kitchen stove that had the old style pilot light on it. So I bought that old stove and am cleaning it up so if shtf or another power outtage, I can use the oven! That's big! I planned to convert it to propane for prep sake, and when I went to get numbers off the back of the stove to start searching for LP orifices...there they were! The LP orifices were screwed to the back inside of the stove already!

This was pointed out to me just today as I went back to a thrift store I'd seen some Colemans at just before closing. Also, on the end of the tank, where you lift, then cover the hole on the pumping knob is a hole you're supposed to put oil into (it even says "oil"). Same guys recommended Zoom oil. The stuff that generally needs to be cleaned or replaced on a Coleman stove-- the "generator" and shutoff valve assembly -- are replaced by that adapter. The burners can be taken apart and cleaned, but that's usually not necessary unless they get really gunked up. In fact, I would guess that running them on propane would burn out any carbon or other gunk that has built up in the burners, unless they are seriously clogged up.

Only use this same kinda stove. Have used the same one my family used when I was a child. This conversion kit is what I was looking for on my stove for use with the scouts. Could buy a new propane stove but have some attachment to my 50 year old family coleman stove :)

Lightning Lego same here. Have used my stove since I was a child 60 years ago. Converted mine to propane the same way about 20 years ago.

great solution. Mine is similar but more modern. I have a Coleman 2-burner propane stove (from Canada) with a regulator pipe that accepts only the 1 lb canisters like you seem to be using. Unfortunately I can only get a hold of more modern C100 / C500 /CA500 canisters at outdoor stores (living in Norway). I can get the 1lb canisters at welding places but they're crazy expensive. NOWHERE can I find an adapter or information about a Coleman regulator pipe to my old stove that would fit the new bottles. The fact that there are so many names for the various threaded fittings doesn't help. If you have a tip, toss this dog a bone! thx!!
@dubk71
@dubk71 4 года назад
You can by the hose that they sell for mr. Buddy propane heaters and you can run a full size 20lb tank with adapter in video or any accessory that use the one lb tanks. I do this with all my propane stoves.

Just clean up the end that's left. Get it nice and square... Pick out the old piece from the brass end... Now. Freeze the shaft in the freezer overnight.. Next day.. Heat the brass assembly in hot water to about maybe 175 degrees.... Pull the shaft out of the freezer and it should just drop inside the brass part... Let everything normalize and you should be good to go.

Do you think you could use map gas, if you don't turn it up all the way?
@Iridium242
@Iridium242 5 лет назад
Naaa would be way too much for the stove, I would stick with either propane or white gas. My guess would be map gas burns too hot.

Yes, if you buy the right adapter and hose.

I have a 1965 sears 2 burner looks like the Coleman will it work ?
@russlehman2070
@russlehman2070 3 года назад
Very likely that is just a re-branded Coleman stove. As long as the inlet to the burners is the same size as the one on a Coleman, it should work.

What recycling group were you referring to here please? Is it local to you?
@Iridium242
@Iridium242 6 лет назад
Its not as popular as it used to be, but its a group called "Freecycle" pretty much you post items you are no longer using and willing to give away free. We used to have a big group in town but it kind of died down over the years. It was a nationwide thing, so you can always check to see if you have a local Freecycle group where you are. Ours was set up via an old Yahoo "Groups" Group, but there might be some that have moved over to facebook.

Glad I found your channel and just subscribed. Hope you have great and productive day today. I’m working half a day then picking up a stack of pallets. My wife works at Lowe’s and I go around back and there are stacks of oak pallets for free. I’ve been steadily getting them and breaking them down for free fire wood. Sure it’s a process but slow and steady wins the race and it’s better than sitting in front of a tv! I’m curious what state do you live in? I’m here in Upstate NY.
@Iridium242
@Iridium242 5 лет назад
I am in Nevada, about 60 miles outside of Vegas, originally from NYC, but lived in both Westchester and Poughkeepsie for a while, got tired of NY and ended up out here in the wilds of Nevada :) Thats a great deal on the oak pallets, cant beat free firewood.

Iridium242 Only been to Vegas for a wedding but my Raiders are moving there shortly lol. Poughkeepsie isn’t too far from me, I’m in Delmar right next to the liberal capital of Albany😡😡😡 We are expecting somewhere around 18” of snow this weekend, bet you don’t miss snow blowing and shoveling... lol

@@flashfronkprepping1779 I actually get snow here in the desert from time to time, if you go WAY back in my videos, before I started doing prepping vids (around 2008) I have videos of my house and street covered in snow. We are in the high desert so every few years we get a few inches. Its funny to see the panic because people are not used to it, and its pretty much melted away by the end of the day. Right now the pass to get into Vegas from where I live is covered in snow but yeah, I don't miss having to shovel it. :)

Iridium242 btw thanks for the replies! I’m sure you get lots of comments and replying takes a lot of time. Reports are saying we will receive ice and heavy snow so I’m expecting some power outages. Last year I retwired the panel box to accept a 30amp lead from the generator so the whole house is powered. I can’t run everything at once but in five minutes we are back up and running if the power goes out!
@Iridium242
@Iridium242 5 лет назад
@@flashfronkprepping1779 Nice, I have a smaller generator here but most of my backup power is from solar, I built a small backup system that works great for my needs. We are supposed to get rain/snow here today but I need to shoot a video later lol so I may be out in the mess or I may have to put it off for a day! Talk to ya later!

I prefer the duel fuel stove. White gas and unleaded. From a shtf point of view. Propane will dissappear fast if the grid is down. I refill my 1# coleman propane bottles and i have a bunch. But they didn't last long when I decided to only use propane. On the otherhand I have 2, M-1950, Roger's stoves and they used less than 1 gallon of gas for 1 month. With propane prices going up and using 4 to 4.5 bottles per month for cooking. The gasoline stoves cost less and will be used when shtf. 5 gallons of gas will last longer than bottles of propane when there is NO GRID for an extended length of time. And when stores are ran-sacked after a grid down, just as long as a person saved fuel in 5 gallon gas cans, I'd say that person would be in better shape. Just have extra parts to repair what you own, like I do.

Nice. I have made the same conversion on the same stove. I'm still plagued with the age-old Coleman problem. The secondary burner has a weaker flame compared to the main one.
